About My Father's Business: Taking Your Faith to Work

Many books stress the need to be “marketplace ministers.” An equal or greater number tell us why we should be in marketplace ministry. This book tells us how. About My Father’s Business offers proven methodology for becoming a spiritual leader at work, regardless of position or title. Regi Campbell has more than twenty years experience learning and implementing these strategies in companies small and large. With refreshing transparency, he shares his struggles to save his marriage, build his career, and pursue his mission to have influence for Jesus Christ with coworkers. The result is a practical guide for reconciling the quest for corporate accomplishment with the call to be a disciple of Christ 24/7.

“Regi shows us a path that leads us to love and serve our coworkers while moving them toward their own relationship with Jesus Christ. About My Father’s Business shows us the joy that comes from bringing a kingdom purpose to our life’s work.”

Story Behind the Book

“I’m a business guy who committed his life to Jesus Christ in my early thirties. As a brand-new, fired-up believer, I wanted to make a difference for God, but business was all I really knew. I did what most new Christians do—plugged into a church, joined a Bible study, and started family devotions. But the office was still an a place where I felt no purpose, a place where I was just serving my time. I felt thwarted and stalled from doing anything for God there. I’m thankful the Lord showed me that the marketplace is where I am supposed to be. Even more, He has shown me some useful ways to think about the people I work with...and to help them move toward Jesus Christ. I wrote this book to share the road map that has made workplace evangelism and discipleship doable for me.”

I’ve read many books about integrating our faith and work. This book offers a different perspective on being a “workplace minister”. The author tells us that he has found no greater calling than to make his workplace his mission field.
In this book he provides a strategic method for sharing Jesus Christ in your workplace, a clear vision for your calling to be about our Father’s business at work. He provides a step-by-step plan for how you can begin the work of ministry right where you are, a strategy for assessing your workplace, identifying your opportunities, neutralizing the primary obstacles, and boldly enjoying the mission God gives you.
The book is based around the author’s intentionality map (or IMAP for short), a simple tool that that he developed to help him figure out where people in his workplace are spiritually. The word “intentionality” was added to remind him that he needed to be intentional in everything that he did in these relationships, with the overarching goal of helping them move one step at a time toward an excelling relationship with Christ. He tells us that the IMAP is a starting point, a “best guess” as to where a coworker is spiritually. It simply suggests that everyone falls into one of five categories or spiritual profiles. He helpfully provides a link for readers to create their own IMAP.
The IMAP is really a first impression, a quick assessment based on conversations that you’ve had, behaviors that you’ve observed, and things you’ve heard people you work with say. Here are the categories on the IMAP:
• Apathetic A’s are people who don’t know and don’t care about Christianity. The author tells us that until we know better, we should treat everyone as if they are Apathetic A’s.
• B’s are actively searching, looking for answers, interested in spiritual things, but not calling themselves Christians.
• C’s can often be sincere in their faith, but are more comfortable keeping personal things personal. The factor that distinguishes Confessing C’s from other Christians is that their lives lack outward evidence of growth.
• Developing D’s are disciples—learners and followers of Christ. They aren’t silent or secretive about their faith.
• E’s are Excelling Christians have welded their life purpose to their work purpose. They are fully integrated. While they do their secular jobs (and do them well), they have a spiritual purpose every day. They are on a mission from God, and it’s all wrapped in with what they do for a living.
The author goes into detail on each category of person, with helpful suggestions on how to move them to the next category of the IMAP. He tells us that the beauty of the IMAP process is that you are meeting people exactly where they are, and you’re focused only on helping them move one step closer.
The author points out some of the “land mines” for us as workplace ministers. You should be aware of the specific guidelines in your specific work environment, especially if you are in a leadership position, where issues of discrimination and harassment can come into play. He tells us to be sure that you understand what is and is not off-limits as you go about our Father’s business.
The book is full of stories from the author’s life that helpfully illustrate his points. Also included is a “Study Guide” that you can use individually or with a small group.

Easy read without a lot of fluff. The author lays out a practical plan for encouraging growth in Christ for every person in your work environment--from coworkers to vendors to customers, and adds later in the book that he began applkying it to family and friends as well. He warns that this isn't a quick answer but rather a life-long p ursuit, and he offers hints on what to avoid so that you don't prolong the growth process. Overall, it's simple but clearly designed to keep you focused on what's truly important.

I’ve known Regi Campbell for about 10 years. Sadly he passed away in early 2020 but his wisdom and encouragement live on through his organization, Radical Mentoring, and through his books.

I’ve actually owned this book for about 9 years and never read it. Dang! Wish I would have read it years ago but glad I finally read it as I’m now better equipped with a plan of how to beat walk with a variety of people and move them closer to knowing Christ.. one conversation and one step at a time.

Thanks Regi! 🙌🏼

About My Father’s Business, by Regi Campbell, is an intentional, practical & strategic invitation to make your workplace your mission field. Driven by a desire to see people in the business field come to faith in Christ, the author directs the reader to specific things they can take to make an influence. Using an Intentionality Map as a guide, the follower of Christ can help each person in their sphere of influence take small steps toward excelling in their relationship with Jesus. Overall, this book spurs on the reader to become an active Christian wherever they are.

There are a lot of things I liked about this book. It was simple. practical & thoughtful. However, the reading was monotonous at times and the author was overly idealistic in some of his ideas. Worth a read.

This is an outstanding work on how to go about workplace evangelism. Campbell gives very practical steps to intentionally go about your Father's business" by transforming your workplace into a mission field.

The last 30%-ish of the book is a study guide. One criticism I have is that in an intro/foreward, the option to read the study guide concurrently with the main text should be presented as an option. The study guide could be used as a devotional. While ostensibly presented as a how-to on workplace evangelism, it also serves as a guide in spiritual development.

Excellent book. Written by a guy who has been captured by Christ's heart for other people and has a track record of investing in them for the kingdom. Bottom line: sharing Christ takes time and we are not responsible for the outcome. God is. Pheeew!
