The Novels of R.L. Stevenson (Complete Collection, 13 Novels) - Treasure Island, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, The Black Arrow, ... of Ballantrae, The Wrong Box and others
Robert Louis Stevenson (1850-1894) is the Scottish writer best known today for his novel Treasure Island, where he introduced the archetypal pirate character Long John Silver, and the horror novella The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. However, he wrote a large number of works during his career, which were wildly popular with his contemporaries. He is considered one of the greatest English-language writers of all time. This collection comprises all of novels and longer fiction that Stevenson ever Treasure Island (1882) Prince Otto (1885) The Dynamiter (1885) Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (1886) Kidnapped (1886) The Black Arrow (1888) The Master of Ballantrae (1889) The Wrong Box (1889) The Wrecker (1892) Catriona (1893) The Ebb Tide (1894) Posthumous Weir of Hermiston (1896) St. Ives (1897) This edition was NOT merely scanned from an ink-and-paper book, like many Kindle e-books are. Robert Louis Balfour Stevenson was a Scottish novelist, poet, and travel writer, and a leading representative of English literature. He was greatly admired by many authors, including Jorge Luis Borges, Ernest Hemingway, Rudyard Kipling and Vladimir Nabokov.
Most modernist writers dismissed him, however, because he was popular and did not write within their narrow definition of literature. It is only recently that critics have begun to look beyond Stevenson's popularity and allow him a place in the Western canon.
I got this book because I wanted to read Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. I enjoyed reading most of the novels and learned a lot about life in earlier times and new archaic words. It was a long read but worth the effort. Brief reviews of the individual novels follow.
Treasure Island: I read it before I bought this volume and liked it. Good adventure story.
Prince Otto: Stevenson's 2nd published novel is a romance that is supposed to be a critique of monarchy. The editor seems baffled as to why this story isn't more popular. I can clear up that mystery: It's boring.
The Dynamiters: A series of interrelated stories about bomb throwing anarchists. Campy but entertaining.
The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde: I knew the basic plot from popular culture, but the original is definitely worth reading.
Kidnapped: Another good adventure story but with fewer happy coincidences than Treasure Island.
The Black Arrow: A historical adventure story set in the War of the Roses. Fairly entertaining but a bit long winded at times. It actually does try to portray the brutality of war without being graphic.
The Master of Ballantrae: A Winter's Tale: A grim story of sibling rivalry which is well written but not very cheery.
The Wrong Box: A comedy that the editor says was popular when first published but not well known today. I think this is because humor changes over time. While well written the comedy of errors in this story is cliché today.
The Wrecker: A really long mystery story. In the epilog the author stated he wanted the reader to get to know the protagonist so he provided a huge back story. It worked but could've been shortened without much lost.
Catriona: The sequel to "Kidnapped". The editor notes it didn't do well because it begins as an adventure and becomes a romance. I agree with that assessment. Not a gripping read. No one is interested in hearing about the hero settling down to a normal life.
The Ebb Tide: A more realistic pirate story that's darker than Treasure Island. One of the characters reminded me of a human Jabba the Hutt. The ending was a little weak.
Weir of Hermiston: An unfinished novel about a father and son who don't get along mixed with romantic drama. Started off strong and based off the story notes it would've been a good story if he had lived to finish it.
St. Ives: An unfinished action story that changes into a romance. However if he had finished it, I think it would have been much better than Catriona was.
Finally finally finished I think it's been 3 years since I started. That's what I get for buying a 99 cent book on Kindle. On average I guess this is three and a half Stars. I'll give it four stars because a few stories were really very good. The well-known treasure island, Dr Jekyll and Mr hyde, and one other unknown one, Catriona.
4 Stars. Treasure Island is a very well told tale.
3 Prince Otto had a lot of mediocrity, but also some delights. All in all, just average.
2 Stars. The Dynamiter... Stories within stories and in some cases within stories. Most very contrived.
4 Stars. Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Such an interesting study of the duality of human personalities, and especially a fascinating perspective of the evil nature.
3 Stars Kidnapped
3 stars The Black Arrow
3 stars The Master of Ballantrae. A long slog with a good ending.
4 stars Catriona. The Scottish brogue was so hard to follow at certain points I almost have up on the book, but I am glad I didn't as it is a good tale. It's a stirring love story but with lots of adventure. I would have liked it even better if I knew Scottish history.
