Emilio o dell'educazione
Ci sono libri il cui destino sembra quello di essere più citati che letti. Questo è anche il caso di "Emilio o dell'educazione". Chiunque si sia occupato di questioni educative o anche semplicemente di cultura del Settecento ha presente questo titolo e alcuni dei temi in esso sviluppati sono entrati a far parte di un senso comune la scoperta dell'infanzia, l'educazione negativa, la didattica per scoperta, l'utilità e la curiosità come molle dell'apprendimento e via di seguito. Nel tempo tali temi si sono affermati per effetto di un sentito dire sempre più lontano dalla fonte che li aveva originati. Le tante dimensioni che l'educazione assume nel pensiero rousseauiano si ritrovano perciò slegate, come cammei fuori contesto. Questa edizione dell'"Emilio" mette a disposizione del lettore un imponente corredo di note, frequenti rinvii interni al testo, una ricca bibliografia ed altri apparati, tra cui l'indice analitico redatto dallo stesso Rousseau per l'edizione del 1762. Accompagnandolo nella esplorazione del testo, tali strumenti offrono al lettore la possibilità di ricomporre, anche in chiave personale, il grandioso affresco dell'educazione uscito dalla penna di Rousseau, gli consentono di riconoscere il suo carattere di sistema e di collocare i singoli aspetti nella completezza e organicità dell'opera nel suo insieme. Secondo Rousseau educazione e politica sono due facce della stessa medaglia. Mai come oggi si può constatare la verità di questa affermazione.

Appreciation of the wonders of nature and his stress on the importance of emotion made Rousseau an influence on and anticipator of the romantic movement.
