Not For Tourists: Collected Essays 2005-2010

Rate this book
Follow NFT's intrepid editors as the poke, prod, and explore the cities they work, play, and (gasp) entertain their out-of-town friends in. These 41 essays were selected from hundreds of essays written by NFT editors in New York, Paris, Chicago, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Washington DC, Boston, and San Francisco. These essays range from an analysis of nicknames of Safeway grocery stores in Washington, DC, to descriptions of the best air-conditioned lobbies in downtown Chicago, to musings on the pink neon signs of Paris, and everything in between. Curated by NFT founders Jane Pirone and Rob Tallia.

A collection of essays from the NFT site and guides. The writing is uneven but the better essays are marvelous. My favorites were Urban Bohemia about a bier garden in Queens; That Mansion on the HIll about the Morris-Jumel mansion in the Bronx; Sex in the City about swinging parties in Manhattan; and In Defense of the San Fernando Valley.
