Black Moon Lilith

Rate this book
Named for an ancient female figure of primordial mystery, Black Moon Lilith is an astronomical point intimately connected to the Earth-Moon system. In these times of expanding ecological and cosmological awareness, the Black Moon offers a spacious field of investigation engaging women and men in fuller self-awareness and soul expression in life, urging us inexorably to a deeper embodiment of Heaven on Earth. Of increasing interest to astrologers, the Black Moon has been used for decades in Europe, but there is little written in English about this enigmatic female figure and subtle astronomical point. This book, an expanded version of an earlier, shorter work, helps fills that gap.The author blends astronomy, myth, depth psychology and original creative research into her investigation of the Black Moon. Basic, suggestive interpretations are offered, supported by examples of well-known personages. Read it and consider for yourself a question that has haunted and taunted humanity for four thousand is she demonic or divine? Lilith offers no easy answers.

This was my favorite of the three books that I recently read about Lilith. I found the descriptions powerful, accurate, and compelling.

Here are some of my favorite excerpts from the book:

Page 10:
Initially our consciousness is conditioned by inborn patterns, family genes, and Karmic predispositions. This is a limited and limiting state of consciousness that binds us until we seek beyond it. Black Moon Lilith is our ally in this search, as her nature is revelation, transformation, and redemption. She is the all-powerful Mother/Lover who nurtures the soul of her children by cutting the cords that bind us to limited realities and revealing our true nature and essential being. Her sword of truth is like a bolt of lightning that shocks us into awareness. As our consciousness opens up, so do our desires change, continuing to present the limiting dimensions. Our souls never find satisfaction until we let go of all but the one desire for her presence and grace.

Page 11:
The mind becomes exceeding erotic, with an objective attunement to the creative life force that expresses itself through the seemingly miraculous. The more spacious one’s perception, the more deeply one can embody truth and love-wisdom on the Earth plane.

Page 14:
Life is inherently sexual. Lilith deeply impacts and expresses through our sexuality, as we dance in the primeval yin-yang rhythm of the creative life force. Indeed, some researchers focus primarily on the sexual dimensions of the black moon. Lilith evokes a sexual response from the primordial, cellular, atomic, erotic desire that brings us forth into life. Lilith reveals the tantric fusion of sexuality with spirituality, beyond any moral judgements we try to make.

Page 136:
The black moon puts us through the paces with hidden intent, difficult to trust. At times she faces us with what doesn’t seem reasonable or even possible…clearly associated with magic, she ultimately regenerates us through direct experiences of sacrifice, surrender, sexuality and mystic. Obsessive behavior may be witnessed with any planet impacted by the black moon. Consider her themes of autonomy, exile, extremism, and denial. Black moon experiences have a deeply internal effect, turning into subtle signals of soul stimulation.

Page 166-168: Lilith in Relationship
Relationships are most powerful mirrors, reflecting and revealing previously unknown depths of self and other, both loving and unloving. It is said that “love brings up everything it is not.” Relationships that contain Lilith energy are initiatory, soul-to-soul meetings that open us into a deeper center of our experience, dissolving self-definitions and undermining our emotional comfort level. Can we really trust this energy that is unraveling our edges, plunging us into an emotional chaos? Can you trust yourself?

Lilith is highly erotic. Eros is the primal power of love, the intense passion that creates the universe through the power of attraction and desire, transforming chaos into order. Eros is most commonly known as Cupid, the naughty cherubic son of Aphrodite whose arrows cause wounds of love. Such a valentine image of sentimental romantic love hardly does justice to the creative essence inherent in the erotic function. The term erotic is understood mainly in connection with physical sexuality, its pleasure of intensification and release. In essence, Eros seeks not release, but rather an ever-deepening intensity, letting go into a pure experience of existence-consciousness-bliss. True Eros focuses the life-generating dance of the cosmic masculine and feminine and the juicy, creative and re-creative tango of lovers. Erotic desire is profoundly transformational.

What is love? What do mean by falling in love, that delicious and dangerous state we both deeply fear and deeply desire? Eros is the desire for union in delight and passion, evoking new dimensions which open the heart and soul of lovers. The passion of love bring new worlds into beings and reveals us to ourselves and each other. Eros is desire and the “drive towards union with what we belong to,” adds Rollo May in Love and Will. “Eros seeks union with the other person in delight and passion, and the procreating of new dimensions of experience, which broaden and deepen the being of both persons.” Love opens a vision of the infinite. Eros taps into the power of awesome realms, throwing a hot light into the shadows. Love is a plunge into the great unknown, churning sea of hot, erotic, sensual/emotional chaos. It takes great courage and endurance to create and re-recreate love.

…When Black Moon is active in chart synastry, it may be the most compelling factor in the relationship. A Lilith relationship is a spicy tango or a psychological duel, which may spur spiritual growth, but sometimes in a rather cruel way. As I wrote in Living Lilith:

“Such relationships are not about having a family, a simple love affair, or going into business together, although these things may happen. Lilith does not care about the Moon concerns for comfort level or meeting subjective personality needs. Nor does she bow to Venusian emotional pleasure as the prime mover of the relationship, though she doesn’t dismiss such sharing. The main agenda behind a Lilith connection is soul growth and spiritual liberation.”

Such relationships are ego-busters, requiring a willingness to connect from one’s truest essence. Along the way Lilith is likely to free up sexual inhibitions so we can feel that primal passion of the “big bang,” or the “big bloom,” as philosopher Ken Wilbur calls it.

Black Moon Lilith challenges women and men to connect with their instinctive passion for life, for this natural force turns destructive when denied, unfulfilled, caged or exiled. Whether woman’s shadow side or man’s darker inner woman, when the deep waters of the unconscious are stirred, this is not sweet-tasting tropical punch. …It is the grit and gruel of inscrutable emotions brewing beneath the surface that are going to spice up the soul and burn a hole through the veil of our comfortable illusions about ourselves. Lilith awakens us to our unknown inner selves and urges us through the dark passageways where she lurks, disguises, and tests. Like the Sphinx, she utters riddles in the circumstantial details of our lives. She hides the answers behind her Mona Lisa smile. She insists that we feel through, let go and surrender to the something deeper in us that is primary, the bedrock beneath the shifting sands. We look in the mirror and see our true selves. The ego quakes; the spirit exults.
