About the author

Cody McFadyen was an international bestselling author of six thrillers. Five of those thrillers are centered around FBI special agent Smoky Barrett, who hunts serial killers. In 2011 his stand alone thriller Der Menschenmacher was published in Germany with no English translation. Before releasing book five in the Smoky Barrett series in 2016, McFadyen took four years off to care for his ailing parents. According to his German publisher he was the father of a daughter and lived in Southern California. Cody McFadyen passed away in May 2023.

スモーキー・バレットが活躍するシリーズ3作目、The Darker Side の翻訳版。

前2作のような残虐さは抑えられ、代わりに人間関係や内面の描写に重点が置かれている。表面的な衝撃は減ったが、話の深みが増して面白くなってきたと思う。今回は背景にカトリック信仰を据えているところも非常に興味深い。

お馴染みの登場人物は相変わらず好人物で魅力的。好人物が集まりすぎている気もするが、心地よく読み続けるためには重要なポイントなので私は歓迎する。シリーズを通してボニーが立ち直り、成長していくのが感動的。某シリーズのルーシーみたくはならないことを願う(^^;

翻訳は全体的には悪くないが、細かいことを言うと、ところどころ文の繋がりが不自然で戸惑ったり、背伸びしすぎたかのようなぎこちなさを感じたりする。それに最近の傾向なのか、ひらがなが多すぎていささか読みにくい。字数稼ぎ? この程度のボリュームを分冊にするのも何だかなあ、という感じ。原作が良くても最近の翻訳の方向性には不満だらけ。
