Overcoming Weight Problems

Rate this book
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy treats disorders by changing patterns of behaviour and thought that may be unhelpful. It is now internationally established as a key method of helping overcome longstanding and disabling conditions, both psychological and physical. This unique self-help guide for those who have a long-term problem with their weight is based on the ground-breaking work in London's only NHS clinic for obesity. It is not a diet book or a healthy eating regime - instead this accessible guide will help you understand why you have gained weight and can't shift it, and why quick-fix diets are not the answer. It will tackle your mental approach as well as the physical problems. For the first time the two doctor authors have put in book form their clinically tested, comprehensive course, based on CBT techniques, that can help you to overcome your weight problems and improve the rest of your life.

A topic that's been coming up a lot in the therapy room lately...

A good book for reducating yourself about weight-loss, including letting go of toxic beliefs and behaviours about food, diet and the body.

Straight-talking and simple to read. Great reflective questions and prompts. Lots of CBT exercises.

Overcoming weight problems is a book that focuses on CBT techniques - changing habits to lose weight in the long term. There is no fast “fix” or fad diet in sight, just real, honest advice on how it can be done. Many of the CBT techniques are things I was already familiar with: cognitive restructuring (changing your negative thoughts associated with weight loss), assertiveness, thoughts and belief systems, behavioural activation and thinking of the reasons why you want to lose weight. All of these things combined really get you thinking about why you haven’t done it yet. I would recommend to anyone who needs a kick up the bum to get started.
