Designed to encourage critical thinking about history, the MAJOR PROBLEMS IN AMERICAN HISTORY series introduces readers to both primary sources and analytical essays on important topics in U.S. history. The collection of essays and documents in MAJOR PROBLEMS IN THE HISTORY OF THE AMERICAN SOUTH provides a comprehensive view of the culture of the American South as well as its political, social, and economic history. The documents are grouped with important secondary sources, accompanied by chapter introductions, selection headnotes, and suggested readings.
While I found the various odd article and text from the old South interesting, it couldn't make up for the poorly written essays of the historians -- often times college professors! -- that were included in the book. Every history major should be required to take English classes until they can properly write a paper with correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation. It was highly annoying to be reading someone who knew their stuff but couldn't correctly convey it through written medium. I am exhausted by the high standard that my college holds me to, in terms of writing papers, when the texts that they give us for class are so full of obvious errors. Anyone who took the time to sit down and read it through to edit could have corrected these mistakes easily. I do not recommend this book if this sort of thing bothers you -- I had to read it for class and would not pick it up again.
