For anyone interested in the history of Texas photography, this is an indispensable book. It is a reference work, listing some 2,500 photographers who worked in Texas in the years 1843–1900. Published by the Texas State Historical Association in 1993, CATCHING SHADOWS draws on censuses, city directories, and government information. A valuable introduction traces the evolution of photography in Texas. The author was a staff member at the Institute of Texan Cultures in San Antonio.
