While the book is the history of the first commerical German airfield, Johannisthal Air Field, it is also a history of early German heavier-than-air flight and German aircraft industry as much of it took place there. The book concentrates on the time between 1908, when airfield construction began, and the end of the First World War when activity there drastically diminished due to the provisions of the Treaty of Versailles (commercial air transport was established at the new Tempelhof Airport then). The book is a true treasure trove of information and contains a lot of contemporary pictures and documents.
