Ransom has published more than 150 books for children, and she is amazed every day that she's able to do this as her life's work. It's no small thing to discover at an early age (ten!) what one is meant to do, and then pursue that dream. For her, the best part of writing for children is that she can move between writing board books, picture books, easy readers, chapter books, middle grade novels, nonfiction, and biography. She is excited to move into picture book nonfiction with BONES IN THE WHITE HOUSE: THOMAS JEFFERSON'S MAMMOTH (Doubleday, 2020).
AMANDA PANDA QUITS KINDERGARTEN and the sequel AMANDA PANDA AND THE BIGGER, BETTER BIRTHDAY (Doubleday) are her first picture books with animal characters! She is proud of her easy readers featuring a brother and sister having fun throughout the year: PUMPKIN DAY, APPLE PICKING DAY, SNOW DAY, and GARDEN DAY. Look for more titles in this Level 1 series written in bouncy rhyme, plus the popular TOOTH FAIRY'S NIGHT (all Random House).
I think this is an easy book for kids to read. It’s silly. Definitely brings back some nostalgia. It’s pretty light for a story, not heavy. But if one is not interested into silliness and crushes, then this would probably appear boring.
I bought a lot of children's books and this was the only book in there that I was unsure of. Decided to give it a read anyway, and I discovered that third-grade love books aren't my thing. Back when I was in third grade, I was into Nancy Drew, Hardy Boys, Babysitters Club - I liked the books with some excitement, and the love story aspect being the central theme of this book didn't keep me engaged. (Engaged? Love book? Sorry, couldn't resist a pun...) That being said: if someone likes third-grade books with a theme of romance, then they will probably love this book. And if someone likes third-grade books with a theme of best friends liking the same boy, then they will probably love this book.
Amber at times drove me a little nuts (if she compared love to eating vegetable soup one more time...) but I must admit, I like a lot about the ending, even if Amber sort of handled it wrong. The first 3/4 of the book, I'd rate 2 stars. The ending was more like 3 stars. So 2.5 stars, rounded down.
