Pele: The Fire Goddess

Rate this book
The legend of Pele, goddess of Hawaii's Kilauea volcano, is beautifully and simply retold by Dietrich Varez and Pua Kanaka`ole Kanahele in this striking volume. Dietrich Varez (an artist who works in Volcano, Hawaii) has vividly illustrated each page with compelling linocut prints that bring Pele's story to life, and create a visually delightful experience to accompany this ancient legend.

Gorgeous red and white prints highlight this legend about the goddess Pele. This version of the story has some unusual depth compared with other stories I've read about Pele, with family squabbles, jealousy, and forgiveness woven into the tale.

I found the myths extremely interesting. That being said, I think there was too much text for a children's book. There was too much going on here.

A beautifully illustrated (with red and white block prints) and easy to read telling of the the Goddess Pele, of her love for and jealousy of her sister Hi'iaka, and her reign as the Goddess of Volcanos.
