In The Land Of Winter Kate wants to forget her past. Lex wants to begin his future. The strangers meet on an ill-fated flight to Scotland, their lives and secrets collide when the plane crashes into the North Sea. Only known survivors Kate and Lex are stranded on an island with an old lighthouse they are forced to use for shelter. Lex is desperate to get them both rescued. Kate is desperate to stop him.
Margaret Sarah Bechtel’s In The Land Of Winter is one of those novels that immediately cast a biting, eerie chill up my skin, making me shudder, though I wasn’t cold. Her cover, dramatic and mesmerizing, much like her writing style, drew me in from the first. It packed such an impact, I could almost hear the wind whistling through my ears and waves crashing against rock, hypnotized by the beacon of light emitting from its light house. That’s also how I found miss Bechtel’s main character, Kate, to be. She was a lighthouse. One that possessed a hypnotizing beacon of light but her lenses were cracked and there was no one to guide home her saving ship.
Kate suffers a shocking and, frankly, debilitating event as a young girl. She is shunned by her family and forced to enter the world alone and very broken. When she is offered a chance to leave her grim life and past decisions, she takes it, hoping it will be her chance to start over but it seems Kate can never stray too far from agony. As her plane plummets toward the ocean below, she anticipates a peace she could never achieve while she was alive but life seems to have different plans for Kate as she discovers that her world is about to collide with even more earth-shattering, mind-altering experiences that could threaten to send Kate beyond redemption.
There are times throughout this book that leave you wondering whether Kate will receive the peace she’s forever been searching for and undoubtedly deserves regardless of her past decisions. You find her heart beats steadily throughout and never falters despite her suffering in self-deprecation and a a literal land of winter but Kate never annoys. She is endearing and lovely and one with whom you want a happily ever after for. I will admit miss Bechtel makes her readers endure Kate’s grief along with her but this makes Kate’s delivery from torment all the sweeter and I, for one, like to know what I’m truly grateful for.
I loved the book and will be recommending it to everyone I know. So, this is me, telling you, to go get it already.
'In the Land of Winter' is a great read! The author shows a great style in the way she took two unlikely characters in a desolate place and had them interact and and live under such harshs conditions was well done. The two characters were such opposites it was intriguing to see how they would last through their ordeal. Spellbinding at times and always moving. Would they find love?-- that's what I kept asking myself. You must read to find out.
I am looking forward to reading more from Bechtel. Great title!
Lately I've been reading books of moving on and letting go.
And this is that but believe me, there is more!
"Have you ever made a mistake that wrecked your whole life? That tore you into a million little pieces? That destroyed who you were and turned you into something empty?"
Margaret!! can we please!say WOW! together! This book got to me in so many levels as many books have but at the same time as no other book did! While reading this I got so mad with Kate that I was afraid I might actually throw my computer away!!-bad thing when you don't have the printed edtition- In the Land of Winter takes you into the life and mind of Kate & Lex as they get to know one another in the least place you expect to know someone. In an island alone. How am I going to be able to describe what this book did to me is a complete mistery but will try to make it work out^^ When you keep to yourself for too long, when you have all this fear, rage, hatred, guilt, and loneliness inside you and don't let go you'll end up just like Kate. It shows you to feel free to accept the mistakes you've done. That opening up to someone and needing that someone doesn't make you weak. To believe that even in the worst of things there's always something good coming just around the corner and you'll reach it if you keep moving on. That forgive and forget are not the same but can't live without one another. It also showed me how much the ghosts from the past can hurt us if we never try and let go, that lies can destroy but trust can kill if you don't have it. THAT A HOUSE IS NOT ALWAYS A HOME. This book had this and sooo much more! I can't even begin to thank Margaret for the book, you opened up my mind to so much more possibilities-specially in me- I found myself identifying with Kate(ok no!!I haven't done what she did and I'm not planning to) but still I myself am very close when it comes to people, so Margaret gave me time to think on this^^
I fell completely in love with Lex's character from the beginning! Kate has seen and lived more than anyone her age has, Lex is haunted by a single yet heartbreaking memmory, how can someone see always the good in people and things is a gift that not anyone can master but he did a wonderful job trying to get Kate to open up to him. Believe me I didn't know how unlucky a person could be until I met Kate & Lex's characters! And they both showed that when you really love someone you really never give up on them. NEVER. So I totally recommend this book to all the people who have been through a lot in their lives and are afraid of talking about it. And even if you haven't give it a try and maybe you can change the life of someone who has. Got to me!Hooked Me and Marked me for life this is a
5/5!(although I found some parts too repetitive, I realized that that's how it really would work out with someone in real life)
What a great story! Definitely a roller-coaster of emotions. Kate London and Lex Harris are on the same flight going to Scotland. Lex just trying to pass time, tries talking to Kate who looks a little (a lot) uptight. He thinks maybe she's afraid to fly, but she is trying to flee what's burdening her mind. The plane goes down, and they are the only two survivors. Lex is trying to spend all his time planning a way to escape the desolate island and Kate is trying to spend all her energy to stay put. She's hiding a secret and this island with it's abandon lighthouse that is their shelter, suits her just fine. Lex not only is trying to figure out a way to escape the island, but he is also trying to figure out what in the world is going on with Kate.
I felt myself going through the emotions these characters were feeling. I was mad, like Lex, when Kate wouldn't tell him just exactly what in the hell was wrong with her and why she acted like such a cold hearted bitch. Then I was sympathizing for Kate when she was reliving the horrible ordeal that has made her the Kate she is today. I worried for both of them when they went through their trials and tribulations. I was just as excited when they finally get rescued. And I cried at the end, happy that Kate finally gets what she deserves and that Lex stayed true to her through the whole story. I can't wait to read more of Margaret Sarah Bechtel's works!

I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
This book was great! I truly love Margaret Sarah Bechtel's writing! I have read another book by her before called "Learning in the Dark" and it was AMAZING! You can see my review for that 4.5 STAR book here. I am going to rate "In the Land of Winter" 4.5 STARS as well. I look forward to more books by Ms. Bechtel in the future because she is such a talented writer. Her stories are very deep and heartfelt; she absolutely knows how to make her readers feel. The real life issues just pulled me in and will pull you in too!
Main characters Kate and Lex have an instant connection when they meet on an airplane on their way to Scotland. Lex is genuinely a good person who immediately felt something for Kate. Kate is a very guarded and negative person but even she could not deny her attraction to Lex. Then, out of nowhere it seems, their plane goes down and crashes into the North Sea. The only survivors: Kate and Lex. They spend months trying to survive in the brutally cold and wet weather, while also recovering from life threatening injuries. Fortunately, some small miracles were granted to Kate and Lex. They had the shelter of an old abandoned light house as well as a few convenient necessities for their survival.
Want to know everything that happened to them after their plane crashed? Find out how they survived initially and if they ever managed to make it off the island. Read the excellent book "In the Land of Winter" by Margaret Sarah Bechtel for all these answers and more!
I really enjoyed everything about this book. I loved the characters, the setting, and the plot - I loved all the surprises and twists too. Right when you thought their bad luck had to turn, something awful would happen again! The author sure knows how to keep us readers on the edge of our seats! I was routing for Kate and Lex the entire time. Kate was the pessimistic one, not even wanting to make it off the island; while Lex was positive and keeping his faith that they would be rescued. Lex was the perfect guy too; he was smart, successful, handsome, and understanding. Kate was constantly stuck in her own prison, traumatized from past events in her life. Her problems definitely made her a challenging person to be around, and her misery tended to drag people down with her. Eventually, Lex made her feel again - which wasn't always a good thing in Kate's case. I wanted Lex to break through Kate's shell and I wanted Kate to allow Lex in. I could see that they were made for each other and I wanted Kate to see that she was allowed to be loved. I know a lot of people would probably find Kate to be an annoying character because of all her problems, but her problems are what made me like her. I actually feel like I can relate to her and want her to have a happily ever after.
So, go on and check out the awesome story "In the Land Of Winter" by Margaret Sarah Bechtel. This 4.5 STAR book will not disappoint you; or at least it did not disappoint me! You should also add Margaret Sarah Bechtel's other work to your TBR (To Be Read) list!
I absolutely loved “In The Land of Winter”. It was beautiful and a heart touching story, on that I found to be a mesmerising story of love and survival. The story only took me two days to read as I could not put it down. Kate was a really interesting character and she was a big influence for me to keep reading. Her past drew me in. The nightmares only revealed so much but enough to keep me hanging and wanting more. Another thing I liked about Kate was the way she reacted to certain things that happened to her with Lex while they were isolated on the island. Watching Kate opening up to Lex was touching as I could feel her hurt and confusion. After Lex’s accident she had to change her way of thinking for Lex’s sake. She was a hard person, one whom I would struggle to get along with, and I honestly wonder how Lex put up with her for as long as he did.
The setting after the plane crash had a sombre feel which really made the relationship between Kate and Lex stand out. They may have been the only people on the island, but their relationship was one that contained life, which was a huge contrast to that of the island.
Both Lex and Kate had a struggle to live on the island. Through their time together they had to trust each other and in time they fell in love. It was a bond that really took time to grow but a bond that can never be broken after all they went through together just to survive on the island but also to survive each other.
It really struck me once they were rescued at how the roles Kate and Lex always reversed while stuck on the island. It started with Lex looking after Kate after the crash then Kate looking after Lex once the old bulling collapsed on him. They took in turns looking after each other and by gathering water and caching them food to eat. A must read for anyone who loves a good story of survival and the healing of old hurts.
Kate and Lex go through so much together throughout this entire book! One minute they are arguing on a plan destined for Scotland and the next they are isolated on a long forgotten island 100 miles away from the mainland. They had to learn to trust each other if they were going to survive…and for Kate that was no small task. Coming from a background of hurt and loneliness is not something you over come easily. But together Lex and Kate overcome their pasts and help each other to find a better future which is full of love and family.
In The Land of Winter is an emotional roller-coaster that takes you along for one hell of ride. It is full of twists and turns that have you hooked from page one until you put the book down! I honestly was a bit afraid to start reading this book because it did not seem like my kind of read but this book truly amazed me! And I am more than happy that I picked it up today and gave it a chance! This book made me angry, happy and it also made me cry more times than I can count. Every emotion that Kate and Lex felt, I felt along with them. It was truly amazing! Margaret did an amazing job with this book and I hope that she keeps writing! Everyone out there needs to feel what I felt while reading this book. It is just pure awesome!
Kate wants to forget her past. Kate is desperate to stop him. i really really liked this book alot, i am hoping there will be a 2nd book to this book, i hope there are more books by this author too, This story is very good, the book was very exciting and very interesting to read i look forward to reading other books by her,i am so glad i got the chance to review such a great book, i really would like to know more about Kate and Lex, i give this book 5 stars Highly Recommended it is a must read, this book was very very interesting i enjoyed reading it alot.
Kate London, a woman hiding not only from herself but from a horrible mistake is one of only two survivors from a plane that has crashed on an isolated island off Scotland’s rocky coast. Kate and fellow survivor Lex Harris have to work together to keep their minds and bodies from being destroyed by physical injuries as well as desperation.
Bechtel makes isolation and self-loathing into villains in her novel. The pace is slow enough to feel the realism of depression on both counts as well as Kate’s dance with insanity.
The author’s romance is outside the norm with her in depth knowledge of survivors’ psyches and struggles. At the same time readers get the elements they look for and love in a romance.
Kate and Lex are seated together on their plane to Scotland when it crashes , Lex and Kate are in for a twisted ordeal , that gives you so many unexpected turns.
It's Thrilling , exciting , and entertaining. All you want is for Kate to find happiness.
In The Land of Winter has so many unexpected events that it's hard not to give any spoilers , the ending is great and leaves you wanting more.
This is a Wonderfully written Book, and I look forward to reading Margaret Sarah Bechtel's next book , which will be out very soon.
This book has two main character, Kate and Lex. After a plane crash in the North Sea, they are the only survivors. I loved Lex, seemed like the type of person I would be friends with. Didn't like Kate, thought she was whiney and grumpy. But then I found out why! Margaret Sarah Bechtel's debut novel introduces her as a developing new author and I am sure that as time passes and her writing grows, she will become a well known author for her ability to be able to write a whole novel based on just two characters. An excellent debut and would recommend it to anyone who is unsure. Well done Margaret Sarah and I look forward to Learning in the Dark and many more.

I highly applaud Margaret Sarah Bechtel for this awesome novel.
I won In The Land of Winter from a give away. It is very well written and easy to get into the story.
Kate and Lex are the only survivors of a plan crash and end up desperately trying to survive in an abandoned lighthouse in Scotland. Both of them end up seriously injured on various occasions and are constantly switching roles as patient/caretaker. Her past and their future seem to be the running theme of the book all the way to the very end.
There were a few times I was frustrated with the story line but aside from that, I really enjoyed it. Recommended for anyone who (like me)enjoys reading about seriously broken and flawed characters.
This is a very interesting book. I loved the characters and finding out about them. I would be very happy to have a LEX with me if I were stranded. This is an intense book, but also funny at times. I would definitely recommend this book to others. Do I need to say I really liked the book? Okay, I DID! LoL
I can't wait to read the sequel, and I get to edit it!!! (I didn’t edit this one.)
This book was a good read. I enjoyed finding out why the heroine acted like she did and was pleasingly surprised by all of it. I am looking forward to reading whatever else Margaret Bechtel writes.
I learned from this book that you can't judge a person by the first impressions, you have to be around them long enough to really see what makes them tick.
I literally had this book read in 2 days because it was that good! Fast paced, lots of excitement, tons of twist and turns. Its got some pretty heavy issues the main character is dealing with. The ending........OMG leaves you begging for the next book!
