An excellent step by step plan for growing your career, aimed at aspiring executives, but useful and practical for anyone working a corporate job. As someone who needs everything spelled out for them, I found this book useful. As someone who's copy-edited, though, the frequency of typos in my printing grated on the nerves.

Book 3 of 12 for 2011!

Amazing book....I know, I know another executive that wrote about how to have their amazing career right? Not at all!

Written by a plain talking executive, with a fresh perspective on the good old boy networks, and how to advance without compromising who you are. It's not a list-book selling the twelve step process for kicking the middle management habits. It's a simplistic look at things that should be considered while trying to be more in your career. The first and fore most is 'know thy self.'

I am very grateful to Patty for this book for the simple fact that this is a conversation that I have been looking for from a leader for a long time. Her conversational writing style left me thinking that this is a conversation I could be having over a beer with my college buddies.

Enjoy the read if you choose to pick up this book. I have already implemented several of Patty's suggestions in my career and am happy with the results. I'll call you with the rest of the results from the C-suites!

P.S. Not sure if this is a new trend in laziness but there were a Hell of a lot of typos in the e-book version. Guess the editor job is not as important when you can update on the fly and go to press and distribution in an afternoon! Sometimes faster is not better.

Six stars! This is THE BEST BOOK ON PROMOTION, EVER… Yes, all in caps. A timeless masterpiece - well worth the read in year 2100 too. I wrote down 7-8 pages of notes, and I think there has been less than 5 books in my 700+ history that I’ve written down this amount of good ideas. The author (a woman!) has climbed the highest ladders of very big corporations and has worked out THE best practices to get promotions - not only for herself, but having the know-how because a big part of her job has been to put together a superb team and promote those who help the organization more on a higher level. There are some very profound controversial ideas in this book, e.g. how NOT to be a “perfect workhorse”, and HOW to get bosses own bosses as mentors to get “into the lists”. The author struggled in the beginning of her career doing the best work and bringing the best growth, because this is NOT the thing needed for promotions and climbing the ladders. If you’re managing a team and want to have the highest influence/growth for the organization, DO READ THIS BOOK.
