Kittler and the Media

With books such as Discourse Networks and Gramophone, Film, Typewriter and the collection Literature, Media, Information Systems , Friedrich Kittler has established himself as one of the world's most influential media theorists. He is also one of the most controversial and misunderstood. Kittler and the Medi a offers students of media theory an introduction to Kittler's basic ideas. Following an introduction that situates Kittler's work against the tumultuous background of German 20th-century history (from the Second World War and the cultural upheaval of the late 1960s to reunification), the book provides succinct summaries of Kittler's early discourse-analytical work inspired by French post-structuralism, his media-related theorising and his most recent writings on cultural techniques and the notation systems of Ancient Greece. This clear and engaging overview of a fascinating theorist will be welcomed by students and scholars alike of media, communication and cultural studies.

Winthrop-Young's book on Kittler is a clear introduction to a brilliant yet also obtuse and opaque figure. Each chapter of the book covers a portion of Kittler's career and is preceded by an analysis of a central text applicable to that part of Kittler's life: Discourse Networks 1800/1900 is typified by Goethe's "Wanderer's Nightsong," his work on analogue and digital media characterized by Pink Floyd's song "Brain Damage," and his elliptical reach back to Greek Kulturtechniken distilled through a reading of the "Song of the Sirens" from Book 12 of Homer's Odyssey.

Winthrop-Young is able to explore the many insights of Kittler's groundbreaking work without lapsing into hagiography. For instance, he is (in my opinion rightly so) critical of Kittler's treatment of women, his essentializing of Greek music, and his largely apolitical approach to technology. Even so, Winthrop-Young presents a Kittler that is extremely applicable to the digital humanities, particularly in terms of his technologically specific historical orientation.

A decent enough introduction to the prickly German theorist. Winthrop-Young balances praise and criticism, and his focus extends from Kittler's early work to later explorations.
