A history of gold mining in the Carolinas, which began when a farmer's son found a 17-pound nugget in 1799, setting off the first gold rush in America.
Carolina Gold Rush is a short but fascinating book. I had no idea that the Carolinas (particularly North Carolina) were so well-endowed with gold. I was amused that a 19th century traveler commented that one couldn't walk across Mecklenburg County (Charlotte is the seat) without falling into a gold mine. Maybe that explains why so many banks are located in Charlotte. (Just kidding.)
