The Red String

Rate this book
This delightful book for children aged 3 and up traces the adventures of a piece of red string as it winds its way around the world. Without a word of text, The Red String playfully conveys the variety of things a red string can get into--and out of--as it finds its way back to the open drawer
where its journey began. This book is another copublication between the J. Paul Getty Museum and the Children's Library Press of Venice, California.

This wordless picture book invites readers to observe multiple creative uses of a long piece of red yarn. From a cat tangled in the string to an astronaut or scuba diver using it for a life line, each page shows a new use for the string.

I would use this with non-readers and readers alike to learn how to tell a story. Initially, I thought of this as a book for primary grades, but I could see creative uses of this book in other grades, particularly with students in reading or writing intervention programs. It could also be a writing prompt or a way to help students think of innovative ways to use ordinary objects.

The Red String is a wordless narrative containing fun, engaging illustrations guaranteed to develope great dialogue and active imagination. As a math lesson you could use red string to measure different distances in the classroom or on the playground. A second activity could include having the students illustrate where their red string might travel.
