From the beginning, the Buddhist community was in possession of rules and discourses, which they held to be the actual words of their founder. The present selection aims at giving the chief characteristics as is found in Suttas or Discourses and the Vina.
Edward Joseph Thomas (1869–1958) was a Pali-language scholar and translator, and librarian in India who published several books on the history of Buddhism. His works, mainly concerned with Theravada Buddhism and reflecting Western scholarship, nonetheless remain widely cited for their clarity and accuracy.
