Da Machiavelli ad Agrippa di Nettesheim, da Folengo all´Aretino, da Sebastian Brant a Rabelais, il simbolo dell'asino appare con insistenza nella letteratura del Cinquecento fino ad assumere un ruolo rilevante nello Spaccio de la bestia trionfante e nella Cabala del cavallo pegaseo di Giordano Bruno. Questo volume (tradotto in francese da Les Belles Lettres e in inglese dalla Yale University Press) analizza per la prima volta la concezione bruniana dell'asinità, in una prospettiva che capovolge la tradizionale interpretazione negativa del simbolo. Qui l'asino rivela la sua doppia connotazione: all'asinità negativa (ozio, arroganza, unidimensionalità) si affianca il polo speculare dell'asinità positiva (fatica, umiltà, tolleranza). L'asino si ricollega così alla duplice natura dei Sileni di Erasmo: basta andare oltre la rozza immagine esterna dell'asinità, per conoscere i tesori gelosamente custoditi al suo interno. E proprio attraverso questo gioco di rovesciamenti è possibile ripercorrere i grandi temi della filosofia di Bruno: la conoscenza, la scienza, la religione, i miti, la civiltà, il linguaggio, la letteratura.

The literature of the ass, if we understand thereby the body of writings devoted to the ass, occupies a prominent place in the literature of the sixteenth century, from Machiavelli’s poetry to the developments by Cornelius Agrippa, who, precisely by means of adigressio ad encomium asin—situated between the chapters de Verbo Deiandde scientiarum magistrison the one hand and theoperis peroratioon the other—concludes his famous declamatio de incertitudine et vanitate scientiarum atque artium.

In the Cantus circaeus, published in Paris in 1582, after the initial exchanges between Circe and Moeris, where the sorceress explains the secret correspondences between certain qualities of animals and those of men, the flow of questions and answers all of a sudden dries up.

Having heard Circe’s explanations regarding the nature of “pigs” and “dogs” in human form, Moeris, instead of raising another question, allows herself a brief digression, where she expresses the need to leave aside an examination of the symbol of the “ass”:
