I really ended up being quite disappointed with this book. It wasn't all bad so let me start with the good.

I like the format. The book is divided logically into chapters devoted to major topics (Users, Computers, Group Policies, DNS, etc.) Each chapter is divided into two to four lessons. Each lesson takes between 30 - 90 minutes to complete. So, you read some material, usually not more than 20 pages, and then you DO the tasks you've just been reading about. I bought a used Dell Power Edge server, installed Windows Server 2003 and VMWare Workstation 7 and was able to do all the exercises on virtual Windows 2008 Servers.

The BIG problem is that many of the exercises didn't work on completion. I noticed some minor syntax errors in the early chapters, mainly devoted to scripting and automating tasks using Power Shell or VBS. No biggies. However, trying to complete the exercises related to a moderately complex DNS infrastructure didn't work at all. I was pretty careful to follow the instructions first time out and my DNS servers weren't resolving or replicating. So I burned everything down and started again and got the same result. Rather than get bogged down (and frustrated) I decided to press ahead. However I ran into significant problems in chapter 15 (Active Directory Certificate Services) and 16 (Active Directory Right Management Services). I didn't even attempt the exercises for chapter 17 (Active Directory Federation Services) since without working Active Directory Certification Services it is pointless.

I just can't get over how poor the editing/quality assurance process was for this book. It seems impossible that someone sat down and did these exercises because I can't see how they would have failed to notice these problems.

Good concept and organization, bad execution.

All 950 pages of pure microsoft fun! This book contains a lot of errors and typos, be sure to check out the Microsoft Press web site for listing of corrections before you read. However, its the best MS server training book I've ever read, especially if you can use VMs to create the labs.

Decent book for exam (I passed mine the first time), but Certificate Services chapter is poorly written and hard to understand if you don't have any experience with CA/PKI. I really recommend some additional Technet documentation for that part.

I read most of it.
I like that it doesn't just tell you how to do tasks but it justifies why it should be done in a certain way. This way helps the engineer to understand the process rather than following the instructions blindly.
very helpful book.
