Life has finally gotten back to normal for the folks on the Shifting Sands Ranch – or as normal as it can be for a group of shapeshifters on the down low, but old habits die hard. When Dakota convinces Jax to bring home an eccentric gorilla-shifter who calls himself “Kong,” they wonder whether they’ve finally bitten off more than they can chew.

Meanwhile, Reporter Derek MacCaffrie needs a story, and the videotape he received of a supposed shapeshifter running wild in the mountains of Wyoming reeks of something sensational. Unfortunately, writing an exposé on the shifters may come at a higher price than he ever intended -- he might gain a Pulitzer, but lose his heart in the process.

It’s a war of shifter versus human as Dakota and Jax take on the world in a battle to keep their family in this third In Their Own Skins installment, Uncaged. Previous books include Shifting Sands and Mark of Cain.

Don't miss the three bonus short stories about other shapeshifters included with the book, Glitter Palms, Divinity Park, and Killer Love

Low 3 ⭐

[I received a digital copy for an honest review]

Uncaged is the third book in Kiernan Kelly's series and sadly my least favorite so far. This book is about a gorilla shifter named Kong, who pushes people away so they don't have the chance to hurt him, and an aspiring reporter named Derek who is looking for his big break and hoping the truth of shape-shiters is his ticket to fame. He didn't plan on falling for the first shifter he meets and wanting to protect him and his secret more than his career. However, other reporters don't feel the same and it puts everyone at the Shifter Sands Ranch in danger.

The best part of the entire book is the chapters having to do with Kong and Dereks relationship. Surprisingly for a book centered on them they don't get enough page time as you'd expect. Jax and Dakota still received a lot of chapters and I understand that they are the pack leaders, but they needed to be supporting characters, maybe a chapter in the beginning and one at the end but that's all I would have needed. Also, the story line climaxed and it should have resolved and ended but instead the other threw in a second climax that I felt was unnecessary.

P.S.- How do you completely change a main characters name from the second to the third book!!!! Taylor's name is changed to Logan for no apparent reason at all .

Uncaged is the third book in the In Their Own Skins series by Kiernan Kelly. The Shifting Sands Ranch shifters deliver another interesting and entertaining story. The story is again written from multiple POVs which I like because I get the feel of knowing all the characters better than if I only see it all through one character's perspective. The main love story is between Gorilla shifter Kong and a human reporter, Derek. They are sweet and sexy together. We also get to revisit the previous couple who were in books 1 and 2, and the super adorable child JD (please Kiernan Kelly, write his story, too!). There is also the overall storyline of the shifters becoming known to the humans of the world. The story has action, drama, danger, and romance. Definitely a fun read.

The bonus stories included are Glitter Palms, Divinity Park, and Killer Love. They are entertaining as well.

☆☆☆☆ I received an advanced reader's copy of the book and I am voluntarily leaving my honest review and recommendation.

"Uncaged" is the next installment of "In Their Own Skins" series, and it's structure is very similar to that of the previous volume, although at the same time it limits the stories presented here to two basic ones, and in this case it resembles the first part of the series. Also the narrative is somewhat in the middle of what Kiernan Kelly has presented in the first two volumes. There are many points of view and, just like it has been so far, we gain an insight into the thoughts of protagonists and antagonists, thanks to which our field of view is quite wide. Obviously, all this influences our interest in the novel, because that's how the author builds tension and allows us to get to know the characters better. This is even more important because it gives us a chance to have our own opinion concerning the people who play the most important roles in "Uncaged", thanks to which the novel has an even greater impact on our emotions.

Although "Uncaged" contains a certain dose of drama, its strong point is also its really good humor, thanks to many funny scenes that we find in the novel. The new characters of this volume, or at least Kong and Derek, make us smile and thus they quickly conquer our hearts. However, it is worth noting that funny situations are not always associated with pure humor. Some of them are hilarious because we know the characters, and in particular the two most important ones, namely Jax and Dakota. Because we already know them quite well and we understand the dynamics of their relationship, some of their habits make us smile and even laugh loudly. In the previous volumes we could already notice that the closer we get to know the individual characters, the more comfortable we feel in their company, which affects our reception of the novel, and this is undoubtedly its great advantage.

"Uncaged" is a novel which is not only funny, but also surprising and rather unpredictable. The action of this volume is rich in events that we haven't expected before. This makes this very interesting book even more addictive than we've thought. Thus, the reader can't wait to find out how all the threads are developed and how the author closes them. So, when it comes to the level of tension and suspense we feel while reading, "Uncaged" definitely wins with previous volumes of the series. The more so because this time dealing with extremely complicated situations turns out to be really difficult, somewhat impossible. The reader follows the events of this volume with heart beating faster and bated breath.

To sum up, "Uncaged" is a really good continuation of the series, which with each volume makes the reader even more addicted to it and attached to the extraordinary characters who make it unique. This installment of "In Their Own Skins" undoubtedly engrosses us, makes us smile, excites us and provides great entertainment, so it's really worth reading. Especially, if we take into consideration the fact that this volume changes the whole series.

________________________________

„Uncaged” jest kolejną odsłoną serii „In Their Own Skins” i w swojej strukturze bardzo przypomina poprzedni tom, chociaż jednocześnie ogranicza przedstawione tu historie do dwóch podstawowych, w czym bardziej przypomina część pierwszą serii.

Część z nich wynika z naszej znajomości bohaterów, a w szczególności najważniejszej dwójki, a więc Jaxa i Dakoty.

Ta odsłona „In Their Own Skins” bez wątpienia wbija nas w fotel, bawi, emocjonuje i zapewnia świetną rozrywkę, więc naprawdę warto ją przeczytać. Szczególnie, że zmienia ona oblicze całej serii.

Kiernan Kelly, would you consider writing another book in this series, with the action taking place a few years after Uncaged? I really can't get enough of Dakota and Jax. Also, doesn't JD ask you for his own story?

Half of Uncaged seems a comedy. Between Jax and Dakota's banter,Derek's misadventures in the forest and Kong's doing his worst trying to look crazy,I don't think I laughed so much in the other two books put together. Add JD's cuteness, and the story is so good. It's in the second half that things get dangerous but also show how much of a strong family bond all the shifters at The Shifting Sands have now.

I enjoyed very much reading the In Their Own Skins series. All the installments are funny, hot, full of emotions and each with its own added intrigue and danger. And I really appreciated all the short stories included at the end of the books.

A recommended read!

This third book in the series, isn’t all bad but it could’ve been better, even though it’s supposed to be about gorilla shifter Kong and human reporter Derek, lots of pages seem to be devoted to Jak and Dakota. Which was frustrating as I wanted to read about the relationship building between Kong and Derek and how they protected each other. They also seem to be changes for some reason to the characters name which was confusing.

The storyline was alright and the writing was entertaining enough but I can safely say book 2 was my favourite. I’m growing frustrated with this series but it’s a likeable enough read.

I enjoyed this series so much and thought this was the best way to close it out. I did notice that Tai’s guy was named Logan here but Tayler in the previous book and I would have liked a little more time with Derek and Kong before they get to their HEA. Having said that, I still think the way everything ended was needed by all the characters. Reading the arc all the way through shows that there are a lot of directions they can go from here and I’d love to see more. Kiernan Kelly has a unique and intriguing take on shifters that hooked me from the first book. I am already checking out other books of theirs to read.

I like this story almost as much as the first two stories in the series. I liked King and Derek together. I liked seeing what was happening on the ranch with characters I had come to love. My only contention is that Jax and Dakota still played such a huge role in the story. While I love them, I think that it was time for them to take a back seat and let Kong and Derek shine. Other than that I love this book and series in general

It's never a good idea for me to step into the middle of a series. This had the hallmarks of that - lots of plot, lots of named characters that I didn't know, lots of mentions of previous plot. There was so much that I just didn't get it. I have loved the Midnight Rodeo series, and I liked the shorts at the end of this book, so I think I might like it when Kelly stretches out the character and shorts the plot. And I love, love, love her use of non-traditional shifter species.

I am a little frustrated at this book which lead me to give it 2.75 which I rounded up for stars.
Kong and Derek are cute together but the story moves too quickly for me to really appreciate their connection.
I understand needing to focus on Shifting Sands for the plot line but it didn't give enough emphasis on the budding relationship between the two.

I had such high hopes for this series and kept sticking it out through books 1 and 2 which were just ok to me but I was wanting more.
I really appreciate the different kind of shifters being thrown together and making a "family of sorts" but this just fell flat for me.

This book was a great, grab-you-by-the-feels, funny, sad, mad, crazy, beautiful, and delightful addition to a fantastic series.
