When it comes to what might be called the "Modern Era" for memory improvement or popularization Bruno furst might be regarded as the Founding Father. All memory techniques, world wide, are based on the same ideas. Simply put, people remember solid concepts like places, colors, people, and stories much better than abstract concepts like numbers, schematic diagrams, or sounds. The key is to take abstact ideas or complicated thoughts and translate them into a story or idea using techniques like exaggeration, comparison, or vivid imagery. Example: if you needed to remember the first three presidents in order you might imagine a cherry tree with a wig (Gorge Washington), drinking an enormeous cup of tea (John Adams), thrown into the University of Virginia trash can (Thomas Jefferson founder of U of V). The symbolism of the the cherry tree, cup of tea, and U of V trash can becomes short hand for prompting the first three presidents.
This same technique combined with the construction of a "Memory Palace" can take a poor memory and improve it significantly. Most people dont need to remember hundreds of things, but to ace tests, remember items that must be remembered in sequence, dates, driver license numbers we all need. Nne of fursts techiques are original and he makes no attempt to make that claim. all the techniques are thousands of years old. But his is the first systemization of these in the last half of the 20th century and if you read his, you have gleaned the best of all the books to follow.
This is not to knock all other books. Books by Harry Lorayne and Dominic O'Brien are excellent, worthwhile, and extreamly effective. But they advance nothing that Furst didnt mention or popularize in 1949.
