This is a must read! Just released today. A loving story about a boy and his Nana who has Alzheimer’s. Done with sensitivity for the little ones who don’t quite understand but also with just enough informational to educate them and help them to understand a difficult medical condition that affects the entire family. Also includes important information for families struggling with this difficult diagnosis with important resources at the end of the story. Belongs in every school and public library! ❤️
This book beautifully captures the struggles of understanding a loved one’s battle with Alzheimer’s. The illustrations help to portray young Nate’s incredible bond with his Nana as he notices changes in her behavior due to her illness. Such an important and poignant read.
Nate has described what it feels like when a beloved person's memory fades. It has been many years since my Grandmother mistook me for a nurse and had no idea who I was; however, that heartbreak never faded. I am grateful that a book with a message filled with compassion and a little humor reminds readers that even though memory fades, love remains constant. Nana Nana a comforting resource for families dealing with Alzheimer's, memory loss and helping children navigate big emotions like sadness, confusion, and grief.
Nana has Alzheimer’s. Much of this book has the little boy alone with his nana who can’t remember her own name or how to read. Nana should constantly have adult supervision. The story is about how a little boy will always love his nana even though she has changed and interacts with invisible people and animals instead of the people around her. The book didn’t show the good old days when nana knew his name. It’s not presented in a way that makes Alzheimer’s something a child can handle. It seems scary and overwhelming the way it is presented here and the illustrations are scary too.
The book is beautiful, from the illustrations to the story. My 8 year old said to me after reading; “I think this book has a message, that it doesn’t matter if they remember you, they always love you.” I hope this books reaches children that are struggling to understand what is happening to a family member with Alzheimer’s.
Nate Bertone’s Nana Nana is a gift for the child in all of us. His story of his Nana and her Alzheimer’s told with love and laughter should be on everyone’s book shelve.
Here’s the thing- I am not yet a parent. I want to be, someday, but not yet. That being said… I am so overjoyed that when that day comes, I will have this book on my shelf to read to my children.
Nana Nana is the perfect tool and gateway for one of the hardest and most confusing conversations a parent could be forced to have with their young child. Alzheimer’s and its effects can be incredibly difficult for families to navigate- I’m grateful for this book and its efforts to make that path a bit clearer.
Not only is Nana Nana illustrated with Disney-tier imagery, but the story is captivating and sweet- all the things a perfect Childrens book should be.
