AJ Humphreys is an emerging author of spooky thrillers, mysteries, and dreadful tales. The small-town serialized four-volume supernatural mystery saga, Season of The Monster served as his debut within the publishing world.

A member of the Horror Writers’ Association, AJ is also the founder, owner, and chief operating officer of Dark Journeys Press.

When AJ isn’t writing, he can often be found outdoors, possibly walking eighteen holes with his parents, brother, or cousin.

Otherwise, it’s almost a sure bet he will have his best buddy, Kobe The Husky, at his side. Together, they both enjoy hiking, and swimming. AJ operates as an amateur landscape and wildlife photographer, which fits in well with the pair’s thirst for outdoor adventuring!

Season of the Monster: Summer is the second in his four-part creature series. This review may contain mild spoilers for SOTM: Spring.

The story picks up immediately following the events in the first book. Ghini is still determined to find her missing daughter, and she has come to accept that other forces may be at play and Jeannie may no longer be her daughter, if she is even still alive. Along with her friend, Samuel, Ghini travels to a nearby reservation, where Samuel thinks there are people who may be able to shed some light on what is happening. Detective Dakota Johnson, who has also been searching for Jeannie, is also contending with a new, possibly related investigation and the odd behavior of two of his colleagues. Meanwhile, Queenie’s hive is expanding outside the forest they have called home for months.

This was an excellent follow up to the first segment of the series. The character development continues to grow, particularly that of Queenie and her daughters, immersing the reader in the hive mind of the Vespids. Another cliff hanger ending had me anxious to read the third book, although I may wait until the fall to match the season. This is a quick read, and one that I highly recommend for fans of creature features, particularly if you’re looking for one that is a bit unique.

Wow! The second book is somehow even better than the first book. It kept me engaged the whole time and I had a hard time putting it down. I can’t wait to continue reading the next two books!

The plot thickens in this book, and I can’t wait to see how it continues in the next one!

Like the last one, there were some weird vocabulary quirks (homonyms abound) and there were a few scenes where I was a little confused about the settings. Some of the environments and the characters’ movements in those environments weren’t super well described, leaving me a little disoriented.

HOWEVER, this book had strong “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” energy and I was HERE FOR IT. It hooked me so deep that I had to finish it, despite the homonyms. Can’t wait for the next one!

"There was no need to fear Death because everyone was judged equally in Death’s eyes."

The second book in this series was AMAZING!! The beginning started a little slow for me, and I was confused about the time of events and what exactly was happening, but it quickly fixed itself. Once I got into it and had a better understanding of what was happening, I couldn't put it down!!! I am so excited to read the next one! I need answers to all of my questions!!!!!

The disappearances have been continuing and as the colony grows larger it is becoming more and more important for them to devise a plan on how things move forward but can the colony continue to grow together or will it become too big for just one leader to control everything? Can those seeking the missing get to the bottom of things before they take a turn for the worse?

This is the second offering in this series and delivers a well worked story that is layered and enjoyable. At no point did I feel bored or confused with the goings on despite there being so many different things happening throughout and for me this shows a truly talented author who understands exactly where he is going with this story.
