Possessed dolls have become all the rage since Annabelle struck up a newfound interest years back. And with good reason. They're very unsettling and the sky is the limit for how someone could manipulate some good source material to make it unique and scary. This wasn't written badly at all, but there were a fair amount of grammatical and punctuation errors, missing words, etc that were distracting, especially during moments where the focus needed to be on certain plot points. And the author didn't take any risks trying anything new with the basic premise. All of it was very formulaic and predictable. I also felt like the story needed to take it's time with certain build-up, rather than just rushing ahead, to get the desired effect. Cassie was a standard lead here and she needed more attention than her parents and even her little brother, Jake. More development to fully establish the codependent relationship between her and Annie-Marie, the haunted doll, would have served this well. Not a bad outing, but there were just a lot of areas that needed further content and copy editing.

Who doesn't love a haunted doll story? There is always something a little freaky about those old porcelain-faced types with eyes that look deep into your soul with real menace! Brianna Raine taps in deeply to that and grabs your insecurities...

The Haunting of Anne-Marie is a novella that drops you straight into the action. Megan & Greg look to escape the bustle of city life to move into a beautiful house in the country. Their daughter Cassie is the first to tap into the dark feelings of the house, and it's not long before the feelings manifest into something truly evil.

Brianna has the ability to make you feel like you're there. Fully immersed in the house and that oppressive, and claustrophobic feeling surrounding you as you turn the pages.

As always, Raine's books are too short. Her grasp on novellas are perfect, but quite selfishly, I'd love to see a chunky novel written one day. That being said, I loved this, and I always love her books!

This is one of the best horror books I've read in a long time. This book had me genuinely scared and on the edge of my seat. I even had a nightmare the night I finished this book. I find that in horror because the books tend to be short we miss out on genuine connections to characters but this was not the case in this book. Brianna has done a beautiful job of bringing the characters to life to make you actually care for them and fear for them. I also found the mother/daughter relationship very relatable. I'm genuinely now terrified of dolls. I highly recommend this book if you want to be scared.

A family moves to the countryside for a fresh start, and—because we all know how these things go—the house is, of course, haunted.

Let’s start with the important things: I’ve always dreamed of having a tub or jacuzzi. This house? It has one. 10/10 on that front.

Beyond that, the story delivers a solid haunted house setup while exploring grief, family bonds, and the dangers of unresolved trauma. What stood out to me was how well the family dynamics were explored, especially given the book’s brevity. The relationships felt real, and I appreciated how the author balanced the supernatural with the emotional weight of their struggles.

Parents, listen to your kids. Sure, they’re not always right, but hearing them out? That’s invaluable. And if you lose a loved one and have unfinished business, please—go to therapy. That’s what we’re here for. Communicating with spirits? Never ends well.

This was a great, spooky quick read. I have always found dolls creepy but this really upped the ante making me hate them that little bit more.... Well done Brianna, brilliant writing!

Being from the UK myself, I could relate to a lot of references, such as living in city vs country and how a few British culture things play out, so was nice to read as helps build the picture up for me in my head.

The development of characters is so well written, and the journey they all go on as a family together adds to the wholeness of the story added with the horror, creepy vibes and general "coming of age" story of the teenage daughter - I couldn't put this down!

"The Haunting of Anne Marie" by Brianna Raine had me hooked from the very first page. It’s a terrifying story that I simply couldn't put down. The suspense built up throughout the story, immersing me in a chilling atmosphere that kept me on the edge of my seat. Raine masterfully crafted twists and turns that made me eager to unravel the mysteries surrounding Anne Marie. If you’re looking for a gripping read that delivers tension and terror, I highly recommend this book.

The infamous Annabelle Doll meets Stephen King's Carrie with a splash of the Exorcist's Regan in one bundle of a crazy haunted doll. What a whirlwind this action packed novella brought! I felt on the edge of my seat with a racing heart with anticipation nearly non-stop! I found a couple things in the end to have made earlier happenings slightly obsolete but over all it was a great and entertaining read. Felt like something that would make a great movie. P.s. That cover, though!

This book is full of spookiness straight from the start with the eerie doll on its cover. It’s full of suspense, thriller and horror as a family moves to a rural house in hopes of a simpler life. When Cassie sees Anne-Marie, the doll, in the attic window, the family’s hope for quiet, ends. As strange things happen, the family is convinced of forces beyond their control, unfortunately, it may be too late.

If you want to read a book that makes you say, why did it have to end? Look no further than the haunting of Anne-Marie. This book was a fantastic book about doll possession. The characters were very relatable and made it a more scarier feeling for the story. This is my second book I read by Brianna and I anticipate her next.

A frightening, scary novella, with some great characters, The Haunting of Anne-Marie, was a great quick read. I found the story told to be engaging throughout with an interesting storyline. In some parts of the story, I found that the author was telling rather than showing, such as with the ‘Megan did this, Cassie did that…’ type sentences, although this seemed to improve as the story progressed and didn’t detract from the story too much. I thought that it may help if each character had their own chapters, as some paragraphs included more than one character’s perspective which at times, I found confusing. I didn’t like the mum, Megan, very much as she didn’t seem very understanding especially with Cassie, her daughter, but she did feel authentic, as some people can be like this. The novella felt the right length for the story told and overall, I enjoyed this spooky, dark novella.

Last October I read The Clown Hotel by Brianna Raine and had a great time with the book, so when I saw Raine at the Indie Horror Chapter event in Canterbury I knew I had to pick up The Haunting of Anne-Marie. Now I will confess I am not massively well-versed in the haunted doll trope, I mean sure I've read the short story The Doll by Carol Ellis in 13 Tales of Horror and of course I've read Night of the Living Dummy by R.L. Stine (and its two sequels) and sure I've seen Child's Play (1988) and its sequels, but still, all that said I really wouldn't consider myself overly familiar with the trope. Therefore I found The Haunting of Anne-Marie to be an absolute delight.

It feels like Raine hits on ground that I would expect a book about a haunted doll to cover, but she does it with a cinematic flair to her writing style that really made the scenes spring to life. However, it's the family dynamic that I think makes this book stand out. Parents Megan and Greg move their family, teenage daughter Cassie and young son Jake, to a new house in the country in an attempt to refocus away from work and to bring the family closer together. Unbeknownst to them, they're not exactly alone in the house. Raine does an excellent job at capturing the teenage angst of Cassie, who is resentful about having to move away from her friends and life that she's built, and this strain is only amplified once doll Anne-Marie is introduced. I do feel like matriarch Megan is portrayed as quite unlikeable, and I'm not sure if this is intentional, or Raine learning into a typical TV / movie trope (Breaking Bad (2008-2013) for example), or if it's just my own personal reading of the character.

There are a couple of sequences in The Haunting of Anne-Marie that I found to be genuinely creepy, and I particularly enjoyed the sequence utilising tiktok. My only critique is that, for me, the conclusion didn't quite land and there were elements that I found a little bit predictable. I will say that when compared to The Clown Hotel , which is more aligned to slasher tropes and so is a little more brutal, The Haunting of Anne-Marie demonstrates that Raine is also very capable at crafting tension. However, both books are particularly good at developing a compelling atmosphere. Personally, I marginally preferred The Haunting of Anne-Marie, and i'm very excited to see what Raine does next.

3.5/5

The Haunting of Anne-Marie is a haunted doll story at its finest. Porcelain dolls are creepy to start with, but when you add in the supernatural events of this book, it takes on a whole new level.
Megan, Greg, Cassie and Jake have moved into their dream house in the countryside. Keen for a fresh start as a family, they come across a china doll in the attic who seems the perfect addition to Cassie’s collection. But then when tragic things start happening to the family, they start to wonder if the doll is more than she seems.

Brianna Raine has a real talent for visual descriptions: this book played out in my head just like a movie, down to the echoing screams I could hear in my head. You can almost feel Anne-Marie watching you from every dark corner. The characters are somehow both incredibly flawed and incredibly wholesome, which just shows how well they come across on the page. The story moves at a quick pace, with some really shocking moments as well as the quieter, more subtle hauntings. Definitely one to add to your list if you like supernatural horror and haunted/possessed items. This is Brianna’s best book yet, and will forever be one of the many reasons I won’t ever collect porcelain dolls.

All and all, this was an entertaining read. Haunted children and Dolls are the creepiest things to me outside of clowns. Where this book fell short for me, but had so much potential, was in atmosphere and ambience. It fell somewhere between a good short story, and a good long novel but didn't commit to either. If it was shortened a little it would've been a good fast pace read. But I believe it would've been better to have made it longer, and added slow build ups to the creepy/tragic events. The storytelling and flow was a bit abrupt and bumpy for me. From one event to the next felt like BANGBANGBANG and you didn't have time to fully emotionally build up to or comprehend one situation before being thrown into the next leaving the characters reactions to them feeling disingenuous and unrealistic. (Example: finding a boy not breathing and needing to be resuscitated, to paramedics showing up and not even checking him over, to the family popping popcorn and watching a movie in what didn't even felt like a 30 minute span)
Overall the story idea was good and the book was enjoyable, but I personally need more detail and scene setting to fully care about and be able to engage with the characters.

This author has the best way of conveying all kinds of fear in a quick read. This book involves a family looking to start over by moving to the country. From the moment the daughter lays eyes on the house there is a feeling of being watched. The terror begins immediately and does not stop until the final words. I have NEVER liked dolls and here is another story that continues to keep that fear in the forefront of my life. As a child, my mother had made, for my sister and I, a doll made in our form. The doll had some of my hair as her own and she was sculpted to look like me. This doll creeped me out. Whenever I would look at her sitting on a shelf I could swear her eyes followed me. Had my mom pack it away and I felt a little better. That is why I believe in spirits and the fact they can haunt anything- and we only have so much control over what happens. This author had me terrified to turn the page but I needed to know how the story ended. Go read this book…..you will sleep with the lights on!

I love haunting stories….especially haunted doll stories! This is just the kind of book to read when it’s dark outside and everyone is asleep….just ignore all the bumps and noises you hear! Unless you hear a small voice singing…then you should probably pay attention. The Foster family is typical family just trying to escape the craziness of city life in exchange for a quiet country home….their only mistake was in not checking out the home’s history.
The characters were easy to get to know and you could find yourself imagining what you would do if you were in their shoes. The ONLY thing I wish was different in this book is I would have liked a little more of the strange happenings occurring over a period of a few days instead of the very first day. I think it would have made the family a bit more on edge wondering if they really were going crazy.
So if you like hauntings, porcelain dolls and unexplainable noises and of course demonic activity then this is the book for you! I will be looking forward to reading more from Brianna Raine!

WOW! What a roller coaster ride that was!
That was an intense ending! It gave me goosebumps!!! I read this book in 2 days!!!! Couldn't put it down. It hooked me from the start in the epilogue. Fantastic writing, got a real feeling for the characters. My favourite was Cassie. A vulnerable teenager was taken from her friends and moved across the country with her family to start a new life. What could go wrong? So descriptive. Loved the supernatural element, doll possession. Anne Marie gave me the creeps! I could feel the eery sinister atmosphere around the doll. My heart was racing at so many points in the story. The ending was chilling, and I felt I was in the story there with the characters in such an intensified situation of life or death! Such a journey... What does it teach you? Never go in the attic! Nothing good can come of it!
This was a 5 star for me, and I look forward to reading more from this author.

A family moves to a new home, in hopes for a change to their family life in the country side.
Unfortunately Anne-Marie a haunted doll has very different ideas for this poor unsuspecting family.
Hauntings, Possession, Injury, Near death and plenty of
spooky moments.

I enjoyed this short haunted doll story.
As an Extreme reader I did not find this book was scary for me (but it does take a lot these days) I appreciated all the twists and turns and the tension between the family during all the hauntings. I definitely felt the family's struggle.
I did find the ending predictable...but I think with a haunted doll story it's quite difficult because it's quite a saturated trope.
I would definitely recommend this book to traditional horror readers or lovers of Annabelle, Chucky, Dead Silence or The Boy.

The Haunting of Anne-Marie by Brianna Raine
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
This is a fantastic good old fashion demon possession horror story! I loved it from page 1! It’s a very entertaining and haunting story!
A family decides to leave the city for a fresh start out in the country; but they didn’t realize what was waiting for them in their new house!
So much craziness ensues once the family moves in! The story displays a lot of family drama and tense family dynamics as well.
The storyline and writing are excellent and the book is intense and exciting! There’s lots of suspense and creepiness with possessions!
This is a fast read and I devoured it in an afternoon!

Thank you to Brianna Raine for an arc of this truly amazing horror story!

Megan and Greg are hoping for a new start in the country with their daughter and son but when they give a doll they’ve found in the attic to their eldest daughter, Cassie, things start going very wrong!

A haunted possession story that puts an already fractured family through hell. Megan feels like she carries the family, Greg is indecisive, Cassie hates leaving her friends and her little brother, Jake bears the brunt of her frustration. It is genuinely creepy the insidious way Anne Marie manipulates the family, there are some shockingly violent scenes as well as the creeping dread of wondering what she’ll do next. A fast paced possession tale with an explosive finale.

Well, if I wasn't already freaked out by dolls of every kind, I certainly would be now. I HATE DOLLS! and this story just reaffirms why! Creepy things all need to be burned. Oh, wait... IYKYK
Brianna takes her readers on a tragic trip through a family drama mixed with a haunting. What could go wrong? Better what could go right and what amazing strength can come out of hardship.
Brianna captures the depth of her character's minds within this short novella, and I look forward to her next tale.

I loved the writing style of Brianna, the twists and turns of what the family went through and could feel said emotions they was going through also. The only thing that I think wasn’t for me was the exorcism stuff, however this is due to my own personal reasons. Yet as a reader I can see why this would be valid.
I would still recommend this book to my friends as I do feel it can give the shiver up your spine and be double checking the dark corners of your room along with side eyeing any dolls that may be owned.

Okay 😱, this was an absolute wild journey. I love briannas books overall! But this definitely went back to her roots where she started off with The Woman in the Mirror. And the horror aspect of this was everything a horror fanatic wants! I was questioning if I was actually hearing things while reading this as I always choose to read Briannas books at night, or while I'm camping at night 🤣 forever questioning my life choices but this was by far her best book yet.

This story follows a family moving from city life to the countryside to be able to connect more but unfortunately the house they choose already has a resident who seems unwilling to share.

I found this book creepy and spooky, with twists and turns that kept you guessing what would happen next. I felt the characters were well written and in keeping with their 'role' in the family, each playing their own part.

I have never liked china dolls and this book has not helped!

A quick read about a creepy doll? Yes please! This short novella follows a family as they move from the city to the country. They want a new fresh start, but that is far from what happens. What follows the move is unexplainable actions by some of the family members, all involving fire and violence. This was a quick read and had a pretty good plot twist. It will be interesting if the author decides to write another novella about this creepy doll named Anne Marie.

I was blown away with how deep I was in this book from the beginning! I was annoyed with the mother for not being more understanding very early on, JUST LISTEN TO YOUR DAMN KID, but then felt a wee bit remorse. I think I'm also annoyed she doesn't know the truth!! These are all emotions I want to experience when reading a good book. The story was well written. I was feeling numerous emotions and if I scared easily this would have frightened me, no one likes a haunted doll!

The Haunting of Anne-Marie will make you second-guess every doll you’ve ever owned. 🕯️ When Megan and Greg move their family to a quiet house in Kent, they hope for a fresh start — but their daughter Cassie quickly starts noticing unsettling things. Her warnings are brushed off until it’s almost too late. 👀 If you love creepy dolls and atmospheric horror, this one will give you goosebumps. 🖤 Perfect for fans of eerie, haunting stories.

I'm not scared of much but haunted dolls are definitely the one thing that will make me feel sick with fear every time. I was really lucky to be sent an ARC of this and I loved every second. The attention to detail was astounding and I absolutely adored this little family, through all of their complexities.

3.5 🌟 for me. Only because I'm incredibly difficult to scare. This has everything you want if you're a fan of a haunted/possessed doll story.
Strained family dynamics, parallels to mental illness, teen angst, strange occurrences, eerie moments and a revelation at the end. Worth a read!

I enjoyed this book! Brianna's writing creates a great pace to eek out the tension - a few times I was so creeped out I regretted reading in bed with the lights off! The ending was a little predictable but it didn't detract from the story. Overall an enjoyable short read!
