Classic Adventure Story
I followed the author after enjoying her Druid's Portal books. Those were awesome because they were current day with magic and time travel!! I really want to read them again but they’re not available anywhere. Really hope the author republishes them!!!
Wintersun is an exciting adventure with magic and dragons in a Lord of the Rings style world. I really enjoyed the balance between the gritty and the inspirational. There’s a ton of blood, gore and violence. A lot of people get eaten by demons and even a cannibal pirate!!! There’s also a lot of people being rescued from slavery, found families, and kindness.
The adventure/action level is VERY high! The main character are constantly running from angry mobs, fighting villains, being captured by slave traders, escaping from disasters. It’s great fun to read about! It’s a surprisingly low anxiety read. Even when the characters doubt themselves, you know everything is going to be okay in the end.
I enjoyed how complex the character are, including the villains. I was Not expecting to have sympathy for a drunk cannibal pirate captain. I expected him to be a cardboard cutout villain for the hero to kill in a dramatic fight…. But he turns out to be a lot more than he appears. Even the Evil demon lord turns out to be more complex and intelligent than I expected.
Most of all, I like the emphasis on kindness and compassion. Love and friendship always end up being what saves the day.
It’s a great story!!! Fun and exciting. If you’re on the fence, go for it! :-)
My only complaint is I want more about what happens after they save the world. Hopefully there’s a sequel!!

An excellent, involved and busy epic ride.
This is a great Coming of Age Adventure Fantasy that has everything.
In a land of Endless Winter created by an evil Ice Lord, a brother and sister are born to a woman as the Ice Lord kills her in battle. Jana has inherited druid magic and wisdom of growing things but must learn to keep the power she has from turning dark. Grieve, her brother, must go on a journey of self discovery of his own curse of winter magic.
Cast out of their village, they go their separate ways but Grieve becomes a slave and then a warrior. Their journey eventually reunites them and together, with the companions and allies they have met move to defeat the Ice Lord and end the winter.
The action never stops. The pacing is good but still sometime overwhelming in the same sense that Lord of the Rings can be.
I'd recommend it for young people who love adventure stories in a land of demons, pirates, monsters and dragons.

Great adventure fantasy!
Wintersun has a wild and entertaining storyline with characters that the reader can quickly become invested in. The plot is filled with dangerous creatures and situations with some amazing abilities. Ms. Tomamichel writes adventure with an incredible imagination and I highly recommend this epic journey!
