The next book of the series! War Eternal Book 2: A LitRPG Military Space Adventure -
Among the members of my squad there's a bombshell called Cowgirl, a killer known as Clown, and three underachiever cadets from the Officer Training Courses. And, no, we're not a circus troupe—we're a Counteraction Forces squad.
Some folks change their outfits every day. We change our entire bodies, for we die often. We don't remember what we looked like before, so we don't care what we look like now.
But sooner or later we will finally remember who we truly are, and then the Universe itself will tremble!
I received a review copy of this book. I read the reviews for this book before diving in. One guy really didn't like it, (mostly because he didn't get the jokes). Well, I can see that, there's a lot of references to pop culture, that may or may not translate depending on where you're from, and what music you're familiar with, as well as what books you've read, but I have to tell you, several of those references had me laughing out loud. Some (I freely admit) I didn't get either, but their delivery didn't make them any less funny. The information about the book claims it's a scifi related adventure, with spaceships and the like. Different planets? check. Spaceships (well, not so much, at least until near the end), but there was plenty of action, and we did get to see multiple facets of the system the main character is dropped into. Some normal, some not so normal, but all of them are funny to one degree or another, and most are highly amusing, especially the way the main character works to solve the current crisis. Admittedly, most of said solutions result in the main character being blown up spectacularly, but occasionally, there's a flash of brilliance in there, where he doesn't actually die, and even protects his team members in the process. A pretty good read, and I'd be happy to read more in this series, this one was plain good fun.
This is the first book I've read by this author. I'm guessing it's a Russian or eastern European translation.
This was hard to read. The premise is great. Take the minds of people who have already died and give them new bodies and put them in the military. If they die, who cares because you can give them another body.
The entire story takes place in boot camp with a sadistic sergeant and the most incompetent (space) army I've ever seen. We start with a squad of misfits who have some talent but can't seem to work together. Add in a sadistic sergeant who kills people for no reason and an army that doesn't have its act together and the story quickly unravels.
Magic Dome, who published this book compared it to Reality Benders by Michael Atamanov. Seeing as that is one of my favorite series, I got the book. I can now say with my hand on my heart that this book in any way compares to Reality Benders.
I wondered at times if the book was intended to be funny. If so, I didn't get any of the jokes. The editing is not great but that is the least of the book's worries. There are stats and what not. I'm going to give it 3/5* even though I could just as well give it 1/5*. Not recommended.
I honestly don't know why this book isn't getting more love. I know folks want more sci-fi litrpg. This has it in spades. You have clones, you have battles, training, off the wall characters, and soldiers just getting the job done whatever it takes. I've spent my entire life around the military and I have heard the stories of the combat vets. About the one guy who seemed to enjoy combat a little bit to much, or the quite one that was the deadly over watch, or that guy that no matter the job given just found a way to get it done. I've got to say that for someone who was unable to join the military, this gives a taste of what it might be like if you boiled it down and are telling modern day war stories. Add in the sci-fi and litrpg elements and you just have a good book that was a lot of fun.
9/10 I'm really looking forward to book two. Yes this was one that I received an ARC of and I hope I did a good job of finding mistakes. If I missed any feel free to list them because they are really good about getting them fixed.
I found the first book rather entertaining despite the protagonist being absurdly cheeky all the time. It was a bit hilarious that a person who lost most of his memories is supposed to be more tactically skilled than trained military officers.
Full of humor and military shenanigans. The system is interesting and I can’t wait to see how the MC’s skills pan out with his glitch. We’re out of the sandbox, time for some real action.
General disclaimer: I want to be clear in that I do not factor cost into any review and as such, this is simply a reflection of my enjoyment of the book and in no way reflects cost to value analysis.
