Volume 6 deals with a growing Existential Crisis that is inside Meguru. He fights, but he doesn’t know what he’s truly fighting for. His family and friends are too busy to care about him, so he doesn’t fight to make them proud. He doesn’t even think he’s doing it for himself. It has gone to the point where Meguru realizes that all of these weight cuts, trainings, and fights have pushed him so far on a long road that there is no point in going back. Meguru sees that he is truly an All Rounder not only in the ring, but in life in a way he is calmly drifting, taking opportunities when he sees them not when he makes them.

The fight art in this series is so incredibly good. I can’t imagine the hours of film study Hiroki Endo sensei has put in to bring this manga to life. But, they have done a fantastic job. The human story behind each fighter is also fantastic, and I especially appreciate that male or female, each person gets fully realized and represented. The struggles, the motivations, the falls, the victories, they all feel authentic. All-Rounder Meguru feels very much like the kind of series that should be able to expand beyond the limitations of its format because of how well crafted it is. It’s too bad it is not marketed more broadly to fight fans too. It is definitely worth a read to fans of sports, drama, and, judging by the last panel of this volume, slapstick humor. Hahaha!

Very well constructed narrative framed around a single shooto fight. Really manages to strike the balance between depicting combat sports in an authentic manner & keeping the plot exciting.
