Sacrifices pace to build the new lore of Shadowman
Having read the original run of Shadowman by happenstance, when Valiant relaunched it's universe, this was one of the least interesting at face value. The years later, I read the second series of the post 2012 and I loved the angle Cullen Bunn and John Davis Hunt took with the character.
Now, having read this version, at least this volume by Valiant/Alien Books this maintain mostly the superhero aspect of the original, with an updated tone, somber, heightened by the art of Pat Zircher and in the later chapters by Roberto de la Torre.
It was sometimes action, and other times worldbuilding with rotating artists in the middle. But when trying to make sense of some choices by the character, just doesn't.
Not an essential read to understand the later series, rather a much "growing pains" series trying to find the footing for the character, which had better writing an pacing in its later series.
