Books 4-6 of the Ghostspeaker Chronicles. Johanna and her band of strange companions have fled the influence of the Red Baron and return to Saardam. In the months that they have been gone, the Fire Wizard has laid waste to the city and any surviving citizens, including Johanna's father, live in fear for their lives. To fight an evil wizard without magic is dangerous to say the least, but then Johanna learns why the Fire Wizard came to the city in the first place. An eastern trader comes into the port city with an iron ship that needs no sails and no animals to pull it.Every ruler or noble who fancies himself a ruler in Saardam or the neighbouring countries wants to get his hands on this magical ship, and many of them don't care how much blood they spill.
These three books conclude the series that began with Innocence Lost. Johanna and Roald have taken the throne of Saardam but it’s not going to be easy! Roald only wants to work in the garden and read his books so everything is left to Johanna. She comes up with innovative ideas but meets resistance at every turn from the King’s Council. With an autistic husband she has no one to turn to other than Nellie, her father and a few old friends but they are not enough. The more she learns about Kyrian and all the children that he has left around the nations, the more she realises how much evil magic is out there. Then, the trader Li Han arrives wanting to set up an office and warehouse. With him comes his son Li Fai who explains some things about magic that Johanna never realised. The story is complex and engrossing and only spoilt a little by proofreading errors. I still strongly recommend it.
Book 4 adds onto the first 3 and personally it should have been finishing off the story. Books 5 and 6 whist interesting, do change the main character's character and sometimes not for the better. There are a few inaccuracies, like being able to breastfeed milk from day 1 - not accurate) and a few activities indicated that are frankly contra-indicative to a health of a heavily pregnant woman. I didn't enjoy the introduction of another romantic interest feeling that Joanna's love story was deftly handled in the previous books. I did enjoy the political intrigues and more revelations about the interesting magic of the created world. Book 6 could have been a bit longer. I felt its ending was too rushed. Otherwise a decent read.
I read the Ghostspeaker Chronicles AFTER the Dragonspeaker Chronicles, just because I found the latter first. A bit of a pity coz the Ghostspeaker Chronicles give the background to the Dragonspeaker Chronicles. I rate these a bit lower, as they tend to drag on a bit here and there. Worth reading though.
I have loved every page of this series. I raced to get the next book each time I finished one- couldn’t wait to get into the next part of the story. Fabulous plot and story line, beautifully developed characters. Thank you for a brilliant adventure.
This is quite the epic saga. Evil men, ghosts and other nasty things attack Saardam. Johanna has sacrificed to much to rest with her feet up doing 'women's things'. Lots of violence. Small continuity errors.
