Thunder Over the Grass

Rate this book
Missing babies in Johannesburg, and nobody cares.

Maliha Anderson and her entourage travel to South Africa to return Riette's baby to the father's family on what should be a simple mission of mercy. But they are soon embroiled in race politics and something even darker: Children are disappearing but no one cares because they are black.

In a battle against a vast subversive power Maliha discovers the worst horrors that man can commit, and struggles to bring the true perpetrators to justice. But what can one woman do?

In a past that never was, the fifth book in the Maliha Anderson series explores a new land, new people and new relationships, with vivid descriptions, intriguing characters, and crisp, elegant prose.

When he's not sitting at his computer building websites for national institutions and international companies, Steve Turnbull can be found sitting at his computer building new worlds of steampunk, science fiction and fantasy.

Technically Steve was born a cockney but after five years he was moved out from London to the suburbs where he grew up and he talks posh now. He's been a voracious reader of science fiction and fantasy since his early years, but it was poet Laurie Lee's autobiography "Cider with Rosie" (picked up because he was bored in Maths) that taught him the beauty of language and spurred him into becoming a writer, aged 15. He spent twenty years editing and writing for computer magazines while writing poetry on the side.

Nowadays he writes screenplays (TV and features), prose and computer programs.

Although I think this is the weakest of the Maliha Anderson books, it's still a solid four stars - which should tell you something about the series as a whole.

Maliha is in Johannesburg, trying to find the family of the baby girl she 'acquired' at the end of the previous book. Naturally, it's not as simple as that - hence, book. This book gets a lot more science-fiction than previous books - with distinct elements of H.G. Wells.

These books are short and snappy, and this one is no exception. When Maliha realises what is going on, the action accelerates (reaching -9.8ms-2). Once again, Turnbull does not shy away from bad things happening to nice people - this is not safe, whimsical steampunk. Maliha's world is not all sunshine and roses, and I prefer it that way.

This book is probably best thought of as the first half of Maliha's final case, as the next book in the series - Under the Burning Clouds - is the finale, and concludes the events that begin in this book.

What an ending!
Reading about the adventures of Mahlia Anderson is always a treat. Well written intelligent books that leave me an emotional wreck. Can't wait for the next book to find out what happens next.
Steve Turnbull continues to handle complex issues with compassion and tact. An excellent read.

The writing and story are 5-star until the last page where it ends with a cliff-hanger. So, if you like that sort of thing, enjoy.

This excellent book is the first half of the final case for Maliha in this series of 6 brilliantly written books (concluded in book 6), though the story really flows continuously from books 1-6. Set in South Africa this time, rather than India, this book still has the authors trademark colour and descriptive setting, which makes you feel like you're watching the action in a film in your head whilst reading the book, it's so vivid. I won't include any spoilers here, but with Malihas typical flair for getting into trouble, I'm sure fans of the series can imagine that this book will be full of plenty of action and adventure, steampunk flair, love and romance (without getting sickeningly slushy!), new friends and betrayals, and a puzzle or two for Maliha and friends to solve.
I loved this book and read it from beginning to end without stopping. I heartily recommend this whole series, and would definitely say you need to read the books in order, to follow through the story. But once you start, prepare to be hooked!!
