For Francesca, nothing is more important than her son. Now he is staring death in the face, she has to relive her past in the hope it will offer a solution. It may be possible, but what lengths will Francesca be prepared to go to, and how many lives will it affect or relationships will it destroy? The reader will unravel the thread of mystery and emotions that entangle Francesca and Tony's existence. Amor, Caravaggio's Cupid, with his ambiguous smile, is a steady presence, hanging over the events to remind us that some battles can only be fought.
I was gifted this book by an Italian friend-of-a-friend. Modern European setting, but allusions to ancient Etruscan history, mythology and cultural were not familiar to me, and thus, I wasn’t able to make real connections.
Plot: Love triangle had some interest, but character reactions seemed “stiff.” At times, I had difficulty following the speakers’ dialogue, without tags. I found myself going back to chapter titles to confirm the speakers.
My biggest difficulty in reading this novel was the language, which seemed to be written in the author’s second language, English. Perhaps, if the writer would draft in first language, acquire an editor, and then a translator, English readers could more readily enjoy.
Still, I wanted to keep reading at each chapter’s end to discover the intersection of the characters’ pasts and what would happen to them as they considered options and made decisions for the future.
