Even though her heart is sworn to saving Finn above all else, the oath demands a battle against unimaginable creatures of myth threatening to destroy the Keep. With her plans gone horribly awry, Fate's only chance for salvation lies in a series of desperate quests through a maze of dangerous portals. Each of which may hold the key to reuniting with Finn, or lead to the destruction of everything she loves. Will Fate find the strength to face the sinister forces poised to claim her world?

T. Rae Mitchell is an incurable fantasy junkie who spent much of her youth dreaming up worlds and bringing characters to life. While most kids grow out of such things, T. Rae didn’t and she sometimes took playing make-believe a bit far. Like the time a wizard hid a bottle of dragon beans in the back yard and left her son convinced he could grow his own dragons. Needless to say, the beans failed to produce and disappointments were had. That’s when T. Rae decided to funnel her crazy imagination into writing. She has since begun her young adult series, Her Dark Destiny (formerly Fate’s Journey), which can be found on numerous Amazon Top 100 Best Seller lists, such as Coming of Age Fantasy and Fairy Tales & Folklore.

The sequel to ‘Fate’s Fables’ has been nearly just as fun as the first! I loved the character development and the addition of new friends. It has made me very eager for the final installment!

Pros:
- Fate has grown up. She’s a strong woman now. She isn’t as whiny or annoying as she started off as in the first book. Her character development was the highlight for me.

- Characters: I loved seeing our old favorites (Gerdie, Finn, Sithias) come back and get more depth to them. I also enjoyed the addition of a few characters. I loved learning about Brune and Farouk and their quirks. I also liked Jessie after reading perhaps half the book. I’ll touch on Jessie again in cons. I loved having Eustace there as well was a great touch to see things from a different perspective.

- BFFs supporting BFFs. Gerdie, Sithias, and Jessie are such strong supporting characters! I want a Sithias in my life tbh.

- The action sequences. There's a lot of fighting and action in this book. It's so well scripted I could vividly follow all the action! I loved it.

Cons:
- Plot. What plot? We don't know the meat of the plot until halfway through the book. It's a little irksome because the "plot" before we know the actual plot is basically summed up as 'Fate sucks'.

- Fate's treatment by those close to her. I could understand Eustace being protective and wanting to keep Fate safe, but also he keeps doubting her abilities even after she proves herself again and again. I don't agree with everyone thinking the whole mess is Fate's fault; that's just unfair. Brune, Farouk, and even Jessie got downright cruel to Fate and it was hurting me because it was mostly undeserved.

- Jessie being a raging bitch. Excuse me, but Fate is trying to keep you from DYING and you're mad at her because she's more famous than you????? What the fuck Jessie. Once she got over herself and pulled her head out of her ass, I loved hers and Fate's relationship. They work so well together when she's not harboring old ass resentment.

- Finn and Fate barely interact with one another in this book. I love how their relationship developed in the first book and I wanted to see it strengthen but they barely got any time together. I liked that teasing of will they won't they see each other, but I ended up disappointed overall.

Overall, it's a strong second book! This is coming from someone who HATES second books (even Harry Potter) so you know it wasn't all that bad. I didn't enjoy it as much as the first, but I am extremely excited to finish the series!

I was allowed to read this galley courtesy of the publisher and netgalley.com in exchange for an honest review.
I did enjoy this sequel to Fate's Fables as Fate finds herself tricked into becoming guardian of the Keep, a repository for magical artifacts at the end of the universe, while still trying to return to Oldewild to rescue Finn. Fate's father, Eustace, and her best friend, Jessie, are also transported to the Keep with her as well as Brune and Gerdie. There they are all immersed in many dangerous tasks while trying to protect the integrity of the Keep. They learn to recognise that people and places cannot always be taken at face value and Fate struggles to balance her constant longing to rescue Finn with her vow to guard the Keep. Can she do both? Will she ever achieve her heart's desire? You will have to read Fate's Keep to find out.

Not going to lie. I skimmed all the pages involving the keep and Fate’s POV. I still understood what was going on but I could not get into all that. The most enjoyable was Finn and Sithius. I devoured those chapters and actually loved it just being the two of them. It’s not that I don’t like Fate but sometimes I just want more of the “boys”. I really don’t have too much to say about this one honestly so I’ll just stop now.

Welcome to the second installment of Fate's Journey, in which Fate becomes the new Keep Guardian while trying to find a way to release Finn from the tree the Green Man placed him in at the end of Fate's Fables.

description

We return to Fate returning from the Book of Fables, arriving in her bookstore heartbroken, but determined to find a way to free Finn and be with him again. In the real world, it's only been a few minutes since she left, even though months passed inside the Book of Fables. Now knowing that the decaying creature that cast its spell over her and Finn is actually her great aunt, she returns with a purpose. Yet, things don't go to plan (of course). Brune manages to convince Fate to become the new Keep Guardian, having her recite the very binding oath, all while they're trying to figure out what to do next when they find out that her dad and best friend are just minutes away, with a gaggle of fans not that far behind. We finally meet Fate's beset friend, Jessie, and to be honest, she's a bit of a turd. Fate decides to be honest with her, telling her the very, very short version of what she went through, only to have Jessie call her crazy and be a brat. Darcy, the fan who had set up a party after the book signing in the first book, shows up again, and seems super stalker-ish, always questioning what Fate was doing, and acting as if Fate was being super shady and like it was her job to find out all of her secrets.

As the party goes on, Fate gets more and more anxious to get to the Keep and move forward with finding a way to free Finn. Her dad drops some crazy knowledge bombs and they finally decide head to the Keep. However, there end up being quite a few stowaways that show up not too long after. Jessie, petulant child that she is, shows up, angry about being left behind. And despite standing in some of the proof that Fate wasn't making crap up, she still acts like a turd. Not too long after, Darcy, her boyfriend, the trolls and warlock cosplayers also show up.

All while this is happening, Finn finds himself suddenly released from the tree. He tries to find Fate, eventually figuring out that she had to have left the book somehow. After a stop in the story where he was close friends with the king, he makes his way to the kingdom where he had killed the dragon queen. He wanted to find O'Deldar and hopefully learn some information as to how to get to Fate. It turns out that Fate had killed O'Deldar during that time her memory had blanked for 3 days. Finn decides to go through all of O'Deldar's books, figuring he may find some information there. And he certainly does, but what finds him bites.

From here, we see a Fate act without thinking, trying to protect everyone by not telling them anything, realizing she is in a pickle, forgetting her training that she learned in the Book, and just acting like a chicken with it's head cut off. She keeps things to herself, and then gets upset and hurt when people act out because of that. What did she expect?? Darcy and Jessie become even bigger turds, and you end up wondering how on Earth Jessie and Fate ever managed to become and stay friends. She literally mocked Fate when Fate shared what she went through in the Book, but then gets mad at Fate for telling her things are dangerous and she doesn't want her to get hurt. She's literally standing in a place that she didn't believe existed, yet won't listen to the person who has has experienced the crazy and danger. Makes sense, right? Darcy has a giant chip on her shoulder about everything, which is a riot, because she's the one that put herself into her current situation. But hey, whatever.

The first half of the book just feels like a mess. The only parts that have any feeling of forward movement are with Finn. He's the only one who's managing to keep his head, even when he's facing death. Fate's just all over the place, and it's really irritating. It genuinely feels like she only remembers her training and how to problem solve when she is "winning" or things are going her way. Once they don't, she loses her shite. She just can't function. And it is annoying. She doesn't remember what she's learned, and therefore doesn't progress or grow. And it is very difficult to connect with a character like that, cause you're constantly rolling your eyes. This first half, I actually rate as 3 stars out of 5. It's chaotic, not unlike the region of space the Keep resides in.

description
Space. The Final Frontier.

The second half manages to pick itself up into some semblance of organization and forward motion. Here, Fate starts to act a little more rationally, briefly setting aside her emotions for Finn in order to do the Big Boss Battle that saves Gerdie and Finn, FINALLY remembering her training, but accidentally loses Jessie to the mind control of the baddie goddess, Kali.
description
Oops.

Overall, I felt frustrated most of the time I was reading this book. It took me just over a couple of weeks to get through it because I was getting annoyed at either Fate, Jessie, or Darcy. I seriously CANNOT stand Darcy. It's one thing to have an annoying character that does something, helping move the story forward, and an annoying character that does nothing but whine, gripe, or be angry. WHAT IS HER PURPOSE???? I seriously hope T. Rae Mitchell does something amazeballs to make all this time putting up with Darcy worth it. I honestly don't know how her boyfriend has managed to stay with her, either. She seems to want to control everything and everyone, and gets mad when she can't. Perhaps she's the angry version of Fate, because Fate wasn't all that better than Darcy in this installment. She was just anxious, worried, sad, and heartbroken, acting without thinking.

In the end, I give this 3.5 stars out of 5. 3 stars for the first half, and 4 stars for the last half. It was annoying to see all the characters around Fate grow (except Darcy), while Fate didn't. Again. While these books are about Fate, they seem more like they're about Finn. He has consistently had great character development and growth, while Fate has remained pretty static. Love can only carry a story so far, and it's a giant disservice when the main character who is female doesn't have nearly the same amount of development as the male love interest.

My rating system is as follows:
1 star - Horrible
2 stars - Bad
3 stars - Decent
4 stars - Good
5 stars - Amazeballs!!!

This book was equally fun to read as book 1. Although this book could have been a little short but there was not a single dull moment and the anticipation of what's going to happen next made this an exciting read!

*Spoilerish.*

Fate and Finn get separated when Finn gets cursed and is bound to the oak and Fate returns to the real world. But she is determined to save Finn but the only way back is through is by going through the Keep and one has to be the guardian to pass by first. Desperate to get back, Fate accepts the hard choice, but this time she is not the only one who tumbles into the world of fairytales. When more danger crosses her path, will be able to reach Finn in time?

The plot of this book was unpredictable which I really liked. This book picks up right where it was left off. Fate's gets back from the book of Fables but Finn is still stuck there, on top of that her whole book signing after party moves to the bookstore which puts her in a compromising position. With the help of Gerdie, she is finally able to return to the fables but quite a few of her friends tumbles along with her. It was actually quite fun and irritating at the same time seeing how her friends reacted. I was especially angry towards Jessie, Fate's bff and I was very much glad when they resolved the issue between them.

The dangers got more amplified in this book, especially the Gorgons. They were nightmarish. But I was soooo glad to have Sithias back!! I love that snake so freaking much! The action sequences were done well and I really enjoyed the backstory of the Keep. Though I felt that the book stretched a bit too much. Anyway, finally, the real villains of the Keep were also introduced. Although we just got a glimpse of them in this book, I have a feeling shit's about to hit the fan in the next one which I'm really excited to read about. And I was soooo happy when Fate and Finn finally got reunited. It's not going to be an easy journey for them but at least they are in it for together.

Overall, Fate's Keep was an enjoyable read. I enjoyed both the plot and the characters. The writing was smooth and easy to read and it was fast-paced throughout the book. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing what happens next in this series.

Recommend it?

Yes.

This review was originally published on NetGalley.

T. Rae Mitchell did it again! After the first novel ended in such a shocking way, I was glad to see the continuation of a great debut!

After barely escaping the book of fables, Fate is back in her world. Desperately wanting to return and help Finn, who is still trapped within the book, Fate will do anything to find her way back. When she is offered the position of guardian of the Keep, Fate takes on the responsibility of protecting the space station, located across the universe, take contains very powerful and dangerous mythical creatures and magical artefacts. Travelling to a new world, Fate must face her destiny, her new unbreakable oath with the Keep and discover the strength to save the people she loves. A new enemy awakens nothing will ever be the same.

The plot is nicely developed and it grabs the reader right from the beginning. There is a lot of action, mystery and drama going on, enough to keep me clued to the pages and to make my breathing stop at times.

I was surprised with the sci-fi approach in this instalment, it took the adventure a bit further than I was expecting. Between the space station, spaceships, aliens, advanced-technology and guns I felt like I lost a bit of the connection with the story. I had this cosy feeling with the book of fables and with outer space I didn’t feel it at all. Still, it was an enjoyable twist to the first novel.
Mitchell did a great job creating this new magical world. The setting is amazing and definitely brings things to another level, I felt the thrill while reading. It’s easy to see her deep knowledge and passion of myths and legends and the style of writing is still a beautiful and captivating as in the first novel. The dialogues are brilliant, witty and funny, a joy to read.

The introduction of new characters was exciting and it nice to how they all have their roles in the story, there are no loose ends, everyone fits into the plot perfectly. I really enjoyed how the real and the fantasy both come together as characters from both realities meet. I did miss Finn though and his interactions with Fate, I really enjoy them as a couple.

Another ending that felt me hungry for more! Can’t wait to read the sequel Fate’s War and see what other adventures await Fate and her friends.

I've been making other people's heads hurt by trying to describe this series that swiftly transitions from fairy tale to science fiction with mythology and geek culture thrown in for good measure. And that even though it sounds like it could be confusing that it is so awesomely done that everything works and flows and why oh why am I going to have to wait for book 3?

The psychological growth for both Fate and Finn is continued in this volume. Knowledge and emotion stays with a person after they leave Oldewilde, but not so with things granted through Words of Making.

I enjoyed the fact that each of our main characters was left to figure out how to move forward on their own. I also love the addition of Fate's best friend, her father, and the random Magic Brew cosplayers. And Sithias. Who doesn't love Sithias?

I love the amazing fantasy world T Rae Mitchell created.
The world of The Keep was filled with mystery and fantasy that wanted me to keep reading and I also just wanted to find out if fate and Finn would ever be reunited.

Fate was definitely my favorite character and I just loved her spunk, fire aand her determination throughout the book.

Since I haven't read the first book in the series I thought I might be missing some but in the end I felt like this book gave me all the information I needed without me missing anything. While I did like the overall plot of this book I did feel like it dragged on in some parts which made it harder to read for me.

I thought the first installment, "Fate's Fables," was a fun and intriguing book with an original concept. This second installment has more of a sci-fi feel that felt like a literary form of whiplash. While it was good to revisit characters, I felt it was odd for them to suddenly go from a medieval fantasy setting to something like "Warehouse 13." The concept of the Keep baffles me (how is it best that a single human from Earth look after an entire planetoid full of dangerous magical artifacts?), and I didn't like how the villains seemed to come right out of nowhere.

I was able to finish this one, but started growing bored and annoyed with a lot of things. That it took so long for Fate and what’s-his-name to be reunited was annoying. Plus their reunion wasn’t even magical or exciting. Then they were at odds with one another almost immediately because of one thing after another. It was just tension for the sake of tension and not necessary. There was enough OTHER stuff going on that these 2 could’ve been working together instead of apart. Plus, I just feel like EVERYONE is so damn immature.

Love knows no bounds

It's a tale as old as time...true love can overcome gorgons, demons, sorcerers and crazy magic. This book was a little predictable from time to time but overall it captivates you with a new take on learning what it means to grow up, to learn the sense of obligation and sacrifice. I cannot wait to see what happens next.

the Fate of friends

Fate misses Finn so much that she would willingly return through the book to find him or the Green Man. but there are complications. like fans, friends, a loving dad, and a book signing. and a zombie. how is Fate going to outrun her own fate and follow her heart?

I don't like Brune. At all. She's annoying and her story is not developed enough to make me care or have interest in getting to a point of caring. Yet, I'm still going to read book 3 even though I'm pretty positive she's a major part of it.

Good story with fun twists and rurns

I love the combination of real, fantasy and mythical characters. Their interactions and the emphasis placed on the results of rash behaviors, the need for every character to do his/her part to make things right.

Complex Fantasy For all Readers

This “young adult“ book(#2) is complex and deeply engrossing . The fantasy world of the Keep is made real. No, several fantasy world’s are made real in these books.

This series is going to be my ruin, even if I have to admit it makes me nervous. The story itself is really exciting and Fate and Finn are two great protagonists but the other characters are not so good and they are definitely without charm. I liked Fate more in the first book, while Finn is my favorite character. He seems the only one with the head on his shoulders.

In the first book, Fate found a magic and dangerous world together with the love of the beautiful Finn, but the destiny take them apart. In this second novel, we can see the feelings and the events of both while they try to meet again.
Fate grew up but she lost some of this maturity for half of the book. The she wake up and she give the best of herself.
Talking about the another guys, Jessie, Fate’s friend, and Darcy were terrible. I would like them less petulant, some more worthy secondary characters.

I loved the meeting between Fate and Finn, and I can’t not help to love him more.
As always, the world building is spectacular e it makes you want to enter those worlds e join the adventure.
I liked Mitchel’s style but I would like her to work more on the characterization. I can’t wait for the next book.

Hold onto your hats and grab your hankies!

Wow! I loved Fate's Fables but I think I love Fate's Keep even more. T Rae Mitchell's wild imagination and incredible world building floors me with every book. Her skilled use of myth and pop culture are especially evident in this second book but she still grounds the story with fully rounded and believable characters. And it was fun to see the return of my favorite characters from Fate's Fables. I can't wait to see where the next book takes me.

I became a fan of Mitchell’s with the first in this series, Fate’s Fables, which ended in such a heart stopping way I found myself constantly checking for when the sequel was going to arrive. It is thankfully here and unbelievably even better than the first.

This fantasy hits all the right spots as you’re whisked along a new compelling adventure with Fate at the reins. There’s plenty of action, romance and her great character development flexes its muscle with new characters to add to her ever growing vibrantly created world. Along with her imagination running rampant in this amazing story you get a first class education in SAT words with the likes of “portionages”, “connectifications”, “confabulation” and “monstramorphosis”; they’re just fun to say out loud. Her incredible lexicon continues in how she uses words to turn printed letters into visual photographs like a slideshow slipping slowly across your mind’s eye. She uses metaphors the way a painter uses a brush.

Mitchell’s use of myths, legends and fantasy elements feel more real than imagined as she pulls you along in this battle for redemption. Her use of credible dialogue adds to that sense of realism as you get pulled into conversations that enrich the tale and further the story.

Just like the first, this one ends on a cliffhanger so the story will continue in Fate’s War. Be prepared to feel your heart break at the impossible decision set before our fearless heroine.

Received an advance reader copy in exchange for a fair review.
Thanks to NetGalley and Original Mix Media for the opportunity to read and review Fate's Keep by T. Rae Mitchell! In this sequel to Fate's Journey, Fate is not going alone to the realm of the Book of Fables. Her father, Eustace, her best friend, Jess and her book fans are going along for the adventure. While Sithias was an interesting and entertaining creature in book one, Faurok takes the role in this story. It takes cleverness on the author's part to create Faurok's dialogue because he mixes words up to make new ones. Finn is on his own in the realm and he's trying to figure out how to get to Fate and he is bound and determined to reach her. I was so happy when Sithias made an appearance in this story because I missed him and his fun personality and his extra s's on his words! Fate is being pulled in several directions while her allies become enemies and her enemies become allies and her story doesn't end in this book. There's a third book entitled Fate's War, which is a good thing because Fate's Keep ends with a cliffhanger. 5 stars!

The second installment in the Fate's Journey series, Fate's Keep seems to go from the deeply fantasy world to an almost sci-fi like world. After escaping the book of fables, all Fate desperately wants to go is get back to Finn, who is still trapped within the book. In an attempt to find her way back, she agrees to be the guardian of the Keep. The Keep is a magical space station across the universe from Earth, containing dangerous mythical and magical creatures and artifacts. Trapped between her oaths to protect the Keep, her love of Finn and her need to protect her friends and family, Fate has a lot on her hands.
Not as intriguing as the first one, Fate's Keep was still a pretty good read. It goes into a different realm from the previous novel. Fate's Keep actually has a major sci-fi leaning with spaceships, super technically advanced aliens, jetpacks and laser guns. It's plot was okay, it contained a lot of action, drama and mystery to keep the readers attention, but the new world just did not seem as rich as the one contained in the book of Fables. The Keep was undefined and the motivations of the whole cast in this new book was not always clear or consistent, so it grew hard to care for them or really even get to know them. All and all, Fate's Keep was pretty okay and I give it the rating of FOUR OUT OF FIVE STARS!!!
