It is back to school time and that is always a good time to read books to the young ones about how to cope with the first day of school, getting along with others, making friends, and all sorts of adjustment issues.

In the case of Eppie the Elephant she has a major problem. She is allergic to peanuts. Not only is she sensitive to them, she has a major issue. So how are her new classmates and her teacher going to react to his problem? Laugh? Understand?
NAMES NOTE: I think it is really cute that the elephant's name is "Eppie" - hint, hint, she needs an "epipen." And of course, the alligator is named "Allie" and the squirrel's name is "Pearl".
So, just how does the news of her allergy get handled? As with many school's method of handling nut sensitivity, there is a nut free zone. Some schools prohibit bringing peanuts or peanut butter products into the school because of the widespread allergy problem.

Eppie makes new friends as the day begins and then at lunch the teacher separates them placing Eppie in the nut free zone. She feels deserted (and sorry for herself) throughout the remainder of the day and dreads going to school the next morning.

The book is written in rhyming prose and it is a cute story with meaning and social ramifications. The illustrations are really cute. I felt the cadence a bit awkward at times but still quite readable.

A charming book that most certainly has a well earned place on school library shelves.

Food allergies are becoming more and more common and schools are making accommodations to make sure children with allergies are safe. Some schools are going completely "nut free" like our school or have "nut-free zones" as in the book EPPIE THE ELEPHANT.

Eppie doesn't want her allergy to peanuts to be something that other kids tease her about so she is very nervous about her first day of school. An elephant allergic to peanuts is quite the oddity. Eppie makes fast friends with Allie the Alligator and Pearl the Squirrel until lunch-time. Then Eppie's secret is revealed when Pearl takes out the peanuts she brought to lunch and Allie starts eating her peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Eppie has to sit at the nut-free table and worries that she may have lost her new friends forever.

Even though this book focuses on peanut allergies, the story can apply to children with any allergies, medical conditions, or differences that might make it necessary for them to separated or singled out from the other students. By pointing out that Eppie is still a great classmate and friend and encouraging ways to make Eppie feel comfortable at lunchtime, this book offers a great example for children to follow.

Livingstone Crouse takes a situation that can be full of anxiety and teaches children how to handle it. His rhyming verse pattern is creative and makes the story fun to read aloud. Brown's illustrations show the discomfort Eppie feels and the curiosity of her friends as well as the joy when they are playing together. The color scheme of the story is bright and the pictures are engaging enough for non-readers to follow along as well.

This is a book that parents of children with allergies should give to their child's teacher. The light-hearted approach will allow the children to feel more comfortable and understanding of this important issue. This book is written for lower elementary level children.

Elephants love peanuts. But there is one little elephant by the name of Eppie who is very, very, very allergic to peanuts. This allergy makes Eppie very sad and she can feel very alone.

Eppie is going to school for the first time. She knows the rule of no peanuts by heart. With motivation and drive her main directive was to make friends and not worry about her allergy. She was hopeful that classmates wouldn’t view her as different, especially since it was uncommon for an elephant to be allergic to peanuts, a known favorite food.

Fortunate for Eppie, she did make a few friends. They had the best morning ever. But when it was time for lunch her good luck had taken a turn for the worst. She was to sit alone at the designated nut free table. Some of the classmates laughed even her new friends. Do you think Eppie would be alone forever or do you think her friends would come around with nut free lunches?

This very creative tale of peanut allergies is set in fun tongue twisty rhyme. It will help young readers understand that peanut allergies don’t make us any different, it can be a difference that can bring us closer together. Easy to read sentence structure along with colorful illustrations make this a fun beginner read for any child. Parents and teachers can use this as a tool to educate young readers on allergies and how they can affect us.

This book is so important to have at schools. I intend to bring it to my boys school, so the teachers can share it in the nut-free classrooms. I love how the story was written in a sign-song fashion, so it will certainly lend itself well in the classroom setting as a read aloud. The illustrations are also bright and cheerful. Kids will better understand nut allergies and how important it is to be be kind to those that may be a bit different than you. Plus, it highlights how special those early friendships are. A delight of a read.

Teachers are always looking for something to share at the beginning of the school year to allow students to understand classmates allergies. This is a good book to start the conversation.
