Opposites attract when a cheerful airhead meets the resident wallflower of his new class in this heartwarming, slice-of-life school comedy series!
The days are getting longer and hotter as another summer approaches. But this time, things are a little different. Kitagawa is acting nicer, Kasahara is more honest about her feelings, and Nishimura has no shortage of friends to enjoy the sun with! After a round of surfing lessons at the beach, the kids of Class 6-1 head off to a campsite in the woods—where a romantic superstition forces Takada to make a tough decision!
Summer arrives again and the kids are embracing everything that entails. But the injection of fresh hormones may make this a summer that awakens more problems than it does anything else. Plus the beach, in case you were wondering.
Another satisfying volume of this series, although this one is quietly drifting away from its core premise to be a little more serialized and a little more dramatic. It’s not a bad change; we’ve had a lot of volumes of youthful exuberance and the change is good.
It also comes with alterations to the basic presentation, devoting an entire chapter to the perspective of Nishimura’s cat, which is not the definitive cat-focused manga chapter, but is still a fun aside that moves the plot forward.
There are some decent gags sprinkled throughout as well - Kasahara’s mom is exactly what you’d expect and that means she’s very effective at mortifying her daughter. Their brief scene together is both funny and feels universal.
Even better, Kitagawa continues his streak of trying to pick on Nishimura, but you can tell he’s mostly doing it out of habit and his heart has mostly gone way out of it. It speaks to how neat the storytelling can get.
I also love the, hopefully, ongoing gag about the Scorpion Crew, Kitagawa’s “gang”. They were previously forced to disband and become the Neo Scorpion Crew. And then suffer a similar fate this volume, so who knows what they’ll be called next?
The rest of it is about everybody being very much good friends and the little changes in Nishimura’s life, but it’s also about her and Kasahara’s remarkably strong friendship that’s really being put to the test with them both liking Takada.
Except Nishimura is only just starting to figure that out and Kasahara’s a little more mature in that respect. It’s all very awkward and grade school, but since they’re awkward kids in grade school it totally works.
The series continues to address the anxieties of friends drifting apart and the quiet creep of more overt feelings entering the mix. As young as the story skewed originally, it has proven to be very smart at how it shows everybody growing and it’s a nice (possibly too nice at times) snapshot.
4 stars - very consistent to what it’s doing and, as it goes on, it seems to be gathering more confidence and a willingness to take chances, which has been rewarding to see.
New Years prayers, snow day shenanigans and finally parents day at school. It's very lovely all an all. I do wonder what he wished specifically on that day at the temple. I wonder if the scorpion gang will every stop bothering Nishimura's peaceful life with her friends.
