The sea-with its unknowable depths, its far-reaching horizons, and its sparkling surface-holds some in fascination, others in fear. But one thing can't be denied by either beholder of the it is home to an array of species we can't even begin to know the extent of. But as for the underwater creatures of the past, who have been extinct for millions of years, we can make an attempt at learning all of them. With The Secrets of Ancient Sea Monsters, you can explore the depths of waters you never knew of, and the aquatic reptiles that ruled that murky world below sea-level. These creatures couldn't be matched, and they are waiting for you to discover all there is to know about their lives!
An encyclopedia geared toward upper elementary students, this was a chronicle of the aquatic reptiles from the age of the dinosaurs.
Divided up by the order of reptiles being discussed, this book talked about a wide range of reptilian sea monsters. Each creature had a two page spread with a full color illustration, small paragraph of text and graph showing it's size. Throughout the book the size of each creature was measured against four things, a basketball, a six foot tall man, a city bus and a 747 sized airplane.
Much of text was almost written in a narrative fashion, describing the illustration. In some cases, where the illustration was just an image of the animal, the text was more informational, with much less story. In addition to full color illustrations, in various places of the book were pictures of fossils of these creatures.
One thing that really surprised me was how many of these creatures were described as average to poor swimmers. For an entire book about reptiles that lived in water, it was a rather large number. It kind of made you wonder how they survived.
A fascinating read, for dinosaur fans or history fans.
Lots of weird typos in this book, and it doesn't include pronunciation guides for the names (pet peeve of mine--I'm not into this crap and don't enjoy stumbling over the names when I read it to my kid).
