Hurricane uses the end of the Mayan calendar as a backdrop for a disaster thriller. Daniel Mayhew has a theory for bringing tropical depressions under control before they become hurricanes. Meanwhile Kelly Delany has a theory that global warming will create the need for a new class of hurricane: category six. Kelly and Daniel if they work together along with the navy might be able save lives and prevent devastation. Unfortunately for them, General Lowe is standing in their way as a member of the "Lucky Thirteen."
Hurricane is an odd book. It has an interesting pair of lead characters with believable families and plausible back stories. Likewise Florida feels like Florida; it is both a setting and a supporting character.
What it lacks though is a firm footing in the disaster genre. It reads like a hybrid of a speculative fiction, a disaster story and spy novel (Cussler, Clancy, Flemming). The typical book has three parts : introduction of the characters and the possible disaster, the disaster itself and the fall out from it. Things are exacerbated by human nature: officials slow to move, so-called experts cutting corners, and so forth.
In Hurricane the human nature aspect is replaced by the "Lucky Thirteen" acting for reasons never fully established. They act like the villains who Dirk Pitt or James Bond go after novel without the heroes to come and take them down in a one on one fire fight. With the focus turned from the danger of the storm to the "Lucky Thirteen" the category six storm ends up being an empty threat.
My final reaction to Hurricane is mixed. I like the main characters and off the wall solution to the hurricane threat. I don't think "Lucky Thirteen" were fleshed out enough to be a successful foil to Daniel and Kelly. Instead they end up taking away precious plot development time from the novel. It would have been more interesting and more thrilling if Daniel and Kelly fail early on to call into doubt their solution when the huge storm is barreling down on Florida.
I received the book from the author to review. I have since released it via BookCrossing.
This book is the ultimate environmentally conscious thrill ride. With the backdrop of a monster storm approaching, 2012 Hurricane: The Ultimate Storm, describes an attempt to use a novel tool "the Sub-Zero" project to ward off the storm and alleviate global warming at the same time because both are connected. Tie in a love story, a possible never before seen catastrophe and you have a story that has all the features of a true page turner. Both protagonists Daniel and Kelly come up with a plan to ward off hurricanes. While Kelly takes on an almost conservationist approach, Daniel is more technically oriented in his solution. Sub-Zero refers to the cooling of the ocean through a series of strategically placed submarines wrapped in cooling wires and powered by nuclear energy. Daniel hypothesizes that the cooling of the ocean right where the eye of the hurricane hits will slow the storm down and minimize any damage of even the strongest hurricane, such as a category 6. A category 6 hurricane is just what is potentially developing and so Daniel will get a chance to test out his model. This book is a fantastic read, I could not put it down once I got started. The storyline is fast paced and has plenty of technical details for the reader. The purpose of the book is clearly to raise awareness of global warming and the dangers that it brings, such as the potential increased number of hurricanes as has been started by some researchers. This is a great book for all science and technology enthusiasts, but has enough love story and nature thriller in it to be of appeal to the general audience.
If you had a chance to stop a piece of weather that has destruction written all over wouldn't you. Well as any experiment goes and as excited as any storm chaser can get Daniel will be able to do it all...or will he? While Daniel is figuring out a way to break up a hurricane Kelly is wrapped up in global warming and the effects if Daniel is allowed to let his theory take place. The author Arnaldo Ricciulli does a great job with the thought provoking morals of both ends of the spectrum.
Who is right and who is wrong? Is there a way that both could work if they could get the higher beings to agree on a something they feel is way out there on a limb to begin with and had the potential of disaster? Daniel feels with some modifications to the existing submarines we have we can contain the impending hurricane on its way. There is also a third party to gain if they both fail...this is where the book keeps your interest. You have to keep reading to see who is getting ahead each day. You will not be disappointed with Hurricane 2012. It's a quick read and a good read.
This book is thrilling and well written, the plot and the language work in unison to make this a book that's hard to put down before you've read the last page. There are some interesting ideas in there too, they made me start thinking about how we could really meet the menace of an impeding hurricane. Hurricane is a story about one of nature's most destroying events. A huge storm is brewing, bigger than any before and we are powerless to stop it....or are we? The main character seems to have an idea on how to cut this storm short, but his suggestions seem to fall on deaf ears. Will he be able to get them tuned in before it's too late? You'll want to stick around to find out... A book full of ideas, action and romance, a tale you'll be pondering long after you turn the last page.
Daniel Mayhew is a brilliant weather researcher who has a proposal to dissipate hurricanes before they hit shore. Kelly Delaney is trying to warn everyone of the impending arrival of a category six hurricane, but her voice falls on deaf ears. Unfortunately, they have to contend with the Lucky Thirteen, a nasty group consisting of major oil companies and corrupt politicians who use the mass chaos generated by such disasters to increase their unending wealth.
The premise of this book is about global warming and I believe Arnaldo Ricciulli makes the reader aware of what is happening to our planet.
The tension builds throughout the story and I enjoyed the character development.
I don't read many books in just one sitting, but as soon as I began reading this book I knew it was going to be a good one. There is nothing I better enjoy than a book written in such a way where I think I'm reading the latest best-selling thriller from the book-store. This was a very intriguing theme and the message this book contains is very powerful. Very well written and undeniably an instant favorite of mine that I will recommend to others, without hesitation.
The author Arnaldo Ricciulli has his own message he is putting forward and you can easily pick it up throughout the story. It is nothing that takes away from the story in Hurricane 2012. It has some great creative minds with the ideas on the submarines...it makes you wonder if it could be done. It would be a great little gift for a storm chaser.
