Everyone says vampires aren't real. Tommy Lucas isn't so sure. Nine-year-old Tommy Lucas needs a bone marrow transplant to survive. But he's convinced his disease is a curse on his bloodline, that he's a vampire. His mother's an oncologist, but Tommy believes only magic can cure him--or the same synthetic blood substitute developed for urban legend Viscount Claudius Fallon. Tommy is stoked when he discovers a five-part series about Fallon in an online pulp fiction magazine called Philly's Argosy . Descended from a ruling class of vampires in Cardiff, legend has it that Fallon traveled to Eureka Springs, Arkansas seeking a cure for his own leukemia during WWII. Tommy's quest leads him to befriend local artist and gallery owner Callan Masters, who struggles with his growing affection for Tommy's mom, June--for he is Fallon, cured in 1939 at the Norman G. Baker Cure-for-Cancer Hospital. Dedicated to living off-grid, Callan must decide whether he will take the risk involved in helping Tommy or falling in love with June. His bite is no longer capable of turning anyone--or so he thinks.

Falling Stars captures the reader's imagination from the get-go with a refreshingly original plot!
When oncologist, Dr. June Lucas's adopted son was diagnosed with PNH (paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria), a condition where the bone marrow produces defective cells, he held a personal belief that he was genetically cursed similar to a vampire. Tommy's conviction was further solidified when he read a pulp fiction published in Philly's Argosy entitled "Bad Blood," the case of Viscount Claudius Fallon which featured a Dham pyre and the eventual healing of of his form of cancer (Li Fraumeni syndrome). The moment Callan Masters crossed his path in Eureka, Arkansas, Tommy suddenly began to see the possible veracity and accuracy of the imaginary tale.
The writer possesses an inimitable style where she uses a combination of modern prose, lyricism and intricate historical, scientific and medical facts and details in her narration. The novel was recounted in different points of view. The fusion of the past into the present was executed properly and seamlessly so that the story development just flowed easily into the climax. Flashbacks and backstories were positioned in the right places for the peruser to truly understand where the character was coming from.
This praise-worthy urban fantasy has an unexpectedly and pleasantly surprising ending that is simultaneously inspirational and uplifting!
This urban fantasy was incredibly unique and I found the way Rogers writes is very refreshing and so very well crafted. Where to begin?
Firstly, the way she has researched the journey terminal illnesses take its toll on patients and their loved ones was so on point. Everybody faces illness differently and this was explored with the pov of the characters. So it was interesting to see complex and opposing feelings represented to create a well considered, realistic portrayal of grief, sadness and uncertainty was respectfully written about.
The way the supernatural storyline was woven into the story was very unique and added so many layers to the narrative. It’s so different and so very carefully crafted. That’s it! That’s the word. It’s crafted. The thoughts, the research, the poetic lyricisms - all well thoughtout. I felt the scientific jargon at the beginning was a bit slow, but then as I got more and more into the book, it hooked me.
I would recommend this book. It’s a breath of fresh air. It’s a gem.
What will Tommy do he needs a bone marrow transplant but is he cursed and is magic the only thing that can help a vampire which he believes he is . This is not your typical vampire story and will bring you on a journey that you won’t know what will happen with Tommy or his new friend Calla
I have to take my time reading while investigating what's really going on, and I have my snacks ready to go. It's beautifully written and well thought to the very end. I will be adding it to books collecting. Iler.
I was completely captivated by "Falling Stars" by Julie Rogers! This gripping tale explores the intertwining lives of Tommy Lucas, a young boy battling a life-threatening disease, and Callan Masters, an artist with a secret past. With its intriguing blend of fantasy, romance, and family bonds, this book kept me hooked from beginning to end.
Julie Rogers weaves a mesmerizing narrative, blending elements of fantasy and reality effortlessly. The characters are well-developed and relatable, making it easy to become emotionally invested in their journey. The emotional depth and exploration of themes like family, love, and sacrifice add layers of complexity to the story.
"Falling Stars" is a captivating and unique take on the vampire genre, exploring the boundaries between magic and science, hope and despair. It will keep you on the edge of your seat, rooting for Tommy and Callan as they navigate their intertwined fates.
If you're a fan of enchanting tales with a touch of romance, mystery, and a dash of the supernatural, this book is a must-read. I highly recommend it!
Truly different than any book I've ever read! Meticulously researched and by the end of the book, I now believe vampires exist. The book has multiple timelines and you must pay attention. It is well worth it. Enjoyed thoroughly. MUST finish to the last page.
A quiet story of belief and disbelief and how each moves against the other, in harmony and discord. The need to keep oneself the unique individual while longing to fit in is a battle one fights through time. Otherness seeks its own balance which can sometimes only be achieved with the compassion of those who also stand outside and choose to peer in for a closer look.
June Lucas is raising her adopted son Tommy who is 9 years old. June is an oncologist and trying to find the best treatment for Tommy who has been diagnosed with cancer. Tommy needs a bone marrow transplant. Tommy believes his cancer is a curse of his blood line relatives to vampires.
TommyLucas who is adopted feels he may be part vampire he likes to eat red food and rare meet his mom June feels he has leukemia and then she meets Callan who has alot of Tommy's traits and she is beginning to fall for him but he has a deep dark secret. This book is a good magical fantasy.
I enjoyed the story of June and Tommy. It was heartbreaking to hear about Tommy’s cancer but is a strong boy. I enjoyed hearing about traveling to St. Louis since I live in St. Louis!
This book is marketed as "a genre-bending mother and son story with a compelling twist on the classic vampire story."
Nine-year-old Tommy Lucas needs a bone marrow transplant to survive. But Tommy’s convinced that he’s a vampire, that his cancer is a curse on his bloodline.
His mom, June, is an oncologist and allows him to continue his practice of eating only red-colored foods because she doesn't want him to lose hope.
Tommy’s excited when he discovers an e-zine series about urban legend Viscount Claudius Fallon, a "dhampyre" from Cardiff who traveled to Eureka Springs seeking a cure for his own leukemia during WWII.
Tommy's mother, as cancer specialist, chooses to return to Eureka Springs, Arkansas, seeking the support of family, where she and Tommy befriend a local artist named Callan Masters. Callan wins over both Tommy and his mother, yet he has a secret. He IS Fallon, the lonely dhampyre from Cardiff who travelled to Eureka Springs Arkansas seeking a cure for his own leukemia during WWII. He was cured in1939 at Baker Hospital. He must decide whether he can risk helping Tommy and falling in love with June. His bite is no longer capable of turning anyone-- or so he thinks.
The author weaves Callen’s story blending it with the personal agony of the lonely vampire Viscount Claudius Fallon seamlessly in the plot. The fusion of the past into the present was handled beautifully and without confusion.
It is evident that the author is extremely talented in medical research, particularly regarding this type of disease. She has created a story that is wonderfully constructed, and it's simply amazing how captivating and emotionally moving it is - on SO many levels! I think historical fiction readers will appreciate the depth of her research, including an exciting time travel from aboard the passage ship Queen Mary in the 1930s to Eureka Springs.
It is possible that some sci-fi/fantasy readers may struggle through some of the detailed language, as she uses a combination of intricate historical, scientific and medical facts in her narration. But I appreciated the attention to details.... it made the story plausible.
The characters are well-developed and relatable, making it easy to become invested in their journey. Written in multiple points of views, young Tommy particularly shines with his youthful thoughts, words, and teenish nature. The true heart of this novel was the immense emotional depth and humanity found in these characters. The themes of family, love, and what we are willing to sacrifice to save or protect those we love all add vital, complex layers to the story. The characters relatable nature made the story feel tangible and very heartfelt.
"Falling Stars" is a captivating and unique take on the urban "factasy" (incidental integration of fact and fantasy.) This very special vampire genre explores the boundaries between magic and science, hope and despair; and will find you rooting for Tommy and Callan as they navigate their intertwined fates.
This book really showcases Julie Rogers storytelling prowess. She has put life into an enchanting story with intriguing characters that will linger in your mind long after you’ve finished reading.... thinking- "could it have happened?"
The author provided me with a copy, at my request, it did not effect my review. I definitely recommend this book! It’s a truly unique gem.
NOTES: *I've visited Eureka Springs, Arkansas, and her descriptions of "the city that water built" are vivid and right on target. She shares the wisdom of the locals: While in all accounts the role of Claudius Fallon as written remain a work of fiction, we can neither confirm nor deny the existence of such a person living in Eureka Springs today. Beyond that....maybe magic will unearth whether Claudius Fallon still actually still resides there! * in Balkan folklore, a dhampir is a mythical creature that is the result of a union between male vampires and female humans. They are a prime example of Hybrid Power. In vampire folklore, they were said to be normal humans, but would eventually become vampires after death. * My own personal note: I read that Julie also does ghostwriting, and her name is UNlisted on many well known bestsellers. Additionally, she was so generous & kind to provide some guidance on a personal project. But, that did not influence my rating, I had already finished reading Falling Stars. ------------------ This fantastically diverse author is a multiple award winner including: 2023 International Firebird Award- First Place in Urban Fantasy 2023 Global Book Award -Bronze in Fantasy, Finalist in Vampire Books 2023 Pinnacle Book Achievement Award- Best Book in Fantasy 2023 Outstanding Creator Awards- First in Medical Fiction 2023 Outstanding Creator Awards- Third in Vampire Literature 2023 IAN Book of the Year Awards- Finalist 2023 Hollywood Book Festival- Runner -Up in Genre 2024 American Writing Awards Finalist in Fantasy 2024 Literary Global Book Awards Finalist 2024 Kirkus Reviews- Awards & Accolades Even more exciting: Buffalo 8 Productions Signs As Executive Producer for Falling Stars!! 👉Falling Stars by Julie Rogers is a captivating urban fantasy novel that will pull at your heartstrings while immersing you in a world where hope, love, and legend collide. Set in the enchanting town of Eureka Springs, Arkansas, the story follows nine-year-old Tommy Lucas, a brave boy diagnosed with terminal cancer. As he battles his illness, Tommy holds on to a deep belief that a legendary vampire, once said to have walked these very streets, is the key to his cure. This mystical belief forms the heart of the story, blending supernatural elements with powerful human emotion.
👉At the center of Falling Stars is the touching relationship between Tommy and his mother, June, an oncologist who is torn between the world of modern medicine and her son's unwavering faith in the extraordinary. June’s struggle to save her son while grappling with his magical hope adds a deeply emotional layer to the narrative. Their journey intertwines with Callan Masters, a mysterious local artist with a century-old secret. As Callan’s relationship with the family deepens, the dangers of his hidden past threaten to unravel everything.
👉Rogers masterfully blends past and present, moving between Tommy's fight for survival and historical intrigue from World War II. The narrative is rich in detail, offering readers both a historical backdrop and a supernatural mystery, all while delving into themes of love, family, and sacrifice. The book’s pacing keeps you hooked from start to finish, with Tommy’s youthful perspective offering a refreshing and hopeful outlook despite the heavy subject matter.
👉One of the standout features of Falling Stars is its unique narrative style, which mixes contemporary language with poetic expressions and detailed historical, medical, and scientific insights. The flashbacks, particularly those centered on Callan’s immortal past, add depth to the story, keeping you intrigued and guessing until the very end. Despite being a longer read at 461 pages, the book never feels bogged down, and every page feels like a piece of a larger, unfolding puzzle.
Falling Stars (56 Mountain Press 2023), by Julie Rogers has a clever premise, which is mostly well executed. A sick child, a lonely mother, a so-called "cured" vampire, all wrapped up in a tenderhearted domestic drama with a hint of Jodi Picoult (in the sense of single mom/sick child plot). The vampire story line weaves in and out of the main event but never quite captures the attention it might have.
The strong, loving bond between mother and child—in this case Tommy Lucas, a young boy battling a vicious leukemia—is the living, breathing heart of the story, though mysticism, suspense, and the host of well-drawn characters also contribute to the intricate fabric of the story.
Tommy’s mother happens to be an oncologist, and she decides to head home to Eureka, Arkansas for family support, where she and Tommy will meet artist Callan Masters, a so-called cured vampire. Callen captivates both Tommy and his mother in short order, though he understands the grave risks to all as relationships develop.
Tommy believes his disease is a curse on his blood line, relative to vampires in the gene pool. The genealogy that would connect him to other vampires in the story is never fully developed, leaving a bit of a hole in it all, but then he is adopted.
The story is emotionally moving on several levels as it weaves Callen’s own story and the urban legend of Viscount Claudius Fallon (the main vampire) into the plot, as well as the marginal but engrossing plot of the journalists writing the viscount’s story.
Author Julie Rogers has a gift, no doubt, and her writing is often lyrical, but she also manages to meander a bit during the story. But these off-plot asides are usually interesting.
All in all, an entertaining tale with a tenderness that belies the vampire twists and should keep readers turning pages. Written in multiple points of views, the segments in the voice of young tween Tommy particularly shine with his youth-speak words, his resilience, and his quirky nature.
Falling Stars is an urban fantasy novel written by the author Julie Rogers, published in April 2023. The narrative unfolds in the captivating city of Eureka Springs, focusing on a young boy named Tommy Lucas, who is diagnosed with a terminal illness, he holds onto a fantastical hope : his recovery depends on a mythical vampire who once roamed these very streets. The profound connection between mother and son—Tommy Lucas, a young warrior fighting a relentless leukemia—is the central force of the story, with elements of mystery, tension, and a cast of vividly portrayed characters enhancing its complexity. Tommy's mother, a cancer specialist, chooses to return to Eureka, Arkansas, seeking the support of family, where she and Tommy will encounter artist Callan Masters, a man shrouded in secrets. Callan quickly wins over both Tommy and his mother, yet he is aware of the significant dangers that come with their growing relationship. Tommy believes his illness is a curse on his bloodline, related to vampires. The author has a unique style that blends contemporary language, poetic expressions, and detailed historical, scientific, and medical information in her storytelling. The novel is narrated from various perspectives, seamlessly weaving together past and present to create a fluid narrative flow. The strategic placement of flashbacks and backstories helps readers understand the characters' backgrounds deeply. This acclaimed urban fantasy ends unexpectedly and pleasantly, offering an inspiring and uplifting conclusion. Despite its length of 461 pages, it's a compelling read, particularly the sections narrated from Tommy's perspective, capturing his youthfulness, resilience, and unique personality. While it may seem lengthy, it's definitely worth the investment for fans of the genre. Highly recommended from my side.
I just finished listening to the audiobook of Falling Stars by Julie Rogers, and I am absolutely in love with this story! The narration was incredible, bringing the characters and their emotional journeys to life in such a vivid way. The way the story shifts between the past and present was so well done—it's one of those rare books that you can’t help but get lost in.
Nine-year-old Tommy Lucas, facing leukemia, believes he's a vampire - and his journey intersects beautifully with the mysterious Viscount Claudius Fallon's WWII-era story. The way Rogers transitions between timelines is absolutely seamless, each chapter building upon the last to create an emotionally rich narrative.
What truly shines is how the author handles Tommy's perspective with such care and authenticity, while crafting a compelling love story between his oncologist mother June and the enigmatic Fallon. The vampire/dhampyre elements add a unique twist to what could have been a typical medical drama.
The historical elements set in Eureka Springs during WWII are meticulously researched, making the past come alive alongside the contemporary storyline. Each timeline complements the other perfectly, creating a reading experience that's both engaging and deeply moving.
If you’re a fan of urban fantasy with a deeply emotional core, Falling Stars is a must-read (or must-listen)! It totally deserves its recognition as the 2023 International Firebird Winner for First Place in Urban Fantasy! 🌟📖🎧
This was such a compelling read. The author did a wonderful job of weaving together elements of fantasy and historical fiction, taking readers on a journey between magic and reality. The profound atmospheric nature of the story and the imagery of the author’s writing style really brought the reader into the narrative, keeping them brilliantly immersed in the lives of the characters.
Yet despite the fantastic depths of the fantasy and magical realism that the author imbued this story with, the true heart of this novel was the immense and profound humanity found within these characters. The themes of family, love, and what we are willing to sacrifice to save or protect those we love all play a vital role in the story. The relatable nature of these characters and their journey made the story feel tangible and heartfelt.
The Verdict
Memorable, engaging, and thoughtfully written author Julie Rogers’s “Falling Stars” is a must-read fantasy meets historical fiction and magical realism novel. The heart and compassion found within these characters and their struggles balanced the narrative's more fantastic elements, keeping readers invested until the book’s final pages.
This book is a combination of historical fiction and fantasy. If you like historical fiction, you'll love this as Ms. Rogers did a great job of research into caskets, vampires, the Queen Mary, the Crescent Hotel, and Eureka Springs, AR. I have visited Eureka Springs several times, so it was fun to read this and know how authentic she was in describing it. Some readers will be frustrated by the amount of detail because it slows the pace of the story, but I think she did a great job of integrating the past with the present and two distinct story lines that intersect. I had to suspend my disbelief in some portions of the book, but I suppose that is the case with most fantasy (and I have not read a lot of fantasy as I prefer creative nonfiction or other forms of fiction). As a teacher educator of pre-service secondary English teachers, this is a good choice for teachers to include in their classroom libraries for adolescent readers as the content is PG-rated and most parents would approve. Adolescent readers might get bogged down in the historical and technical language, though. Kudos to Ms. Rogers on a what I consider a great historical fiction that's a great vampire read.
“Falling Stars” introduces June and Tommy Lucas, mother and nine-year-old son, as they struggle with Tommy’s cancer diagnosis. June’s an oncologist struggling to find the best treatment for her son. Tommy’s just struggling to survive until he happens upon an urban legend…
Overall, I enjoyed this story. It is told through multiple POVs including the main characters of June and Tommy as well as through the online story as they each read it. The pacing of the present POVs was really good and with enough suspense to keep me flipping pages. However, the past timeline through the telling of the online story was a little back and forth. Some portions were really drawn out and while clearly researched, seemed to focus more on what was going on historically than on any meaningful plot. Other portions were the most interesting and suspenseful in the whole book. But it’s the relationships in this story really make it. Find the full blog review at heatherlbarksdale.com
I received a copy of this story in exchange of a fair and honest review.
I received a copy of the book from Voracious Readers Only. This is a supernatural, fantasy and romance read. Tommy is a young boy who is suffering from cancer and needs a bone marrow transplant if there’s any hope for his survival. June is not only Tommy’s Mom but she’s also a Pediatric oncologist. She decides the best thing for them both would be to move from Chicago to June’s hometown of Eureka, Arkansas. During the drive, Tommy is fascinated by a story in a magazine about a vampire that supposedly lives there. Being an imaginative boy, he believes that he doesn’t have cancer but is actually a vampire. If he can figure out who that person is, then he can be cured. You’ll have to read the book to find out what happens. A pleasant way to spend an afternoon.
🌟🌟🌟🌟 REVIEW: While I don’t usually gravitate towards the fantasy genre, “Falling Stars” had me hooked from the beginning. The creative and poetic artistry of the narrative opened up new realms of interest for me, capturing my imagination and keeping me engaged throughout.
I was captivated by how Rogers skillfully incorporated the book’s title and the love scene, showcasing her storytelling prowess. She has breathed life into an enchanting story with intriguing characters that will linger in your mind long after you’ve finished reading. I definitely recommend this book if you’re wanting something different! It’s a true charm.
This is one of the most original "vampire" books I think I have ever read. When Tommy is diagnosed with a rare disease he becomes convinced that he is a vampire.
This book is one that stays with the reader long after the last page is read and the book is closed for the final time. The multiple POV are so interesting - and whereas this is sometimes confusing this author weaves the multiple POV's so perfectly that there is no confusion, no doubt of what is going on.
It is evident that the author did a lot of research regarding this type of disease and created a story that is so wonderfully constructed and told that it's just simply amazing.
This is not the average vampire story. As a matter of fact, it’s not an average story at all. The fresh and memorable plot will have you cheering for Tommy. The details dance off the page and transport you into another world. All this is done in a dual timeline of the past and present which flows naturally. I was captivated by the author’s ability to orchestrate a beautifully written story rich with imagination. By combining love, sacrifice, hope, and loss, this is a story that will remain in your heart long after you close the book. I will definitely be reading more by this gifted author.
Falling Stars swept me away with its emotional depth and well crafted characters. I found the storyline both heartwarming and heartbreaking, as it explores love, loss, and the resilience of the human spirit. Rogers has a knack for creating vivid imagery, which made each scene feel so real. There were moments when the pacing felt a bit slow, and some plot twists seemed predictable. Still, the beautiful writing and strong themes kept me hooked, leaving me reflecting on the story long after I finished the book. Overall, it’s a moving read that’s definitely worth your time.
It took me a while to get into this one, and at first I wasn’t sure I was going to be able to. But once I picked up on the plot threads and how they were related, I was very intrigued. In the end, my persistence paid off. I ended up really liking how the author delved into historical aspects of the perception of vampires and the medical scenarios. I ended up caring about the characters. I received an advanced review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This is a new author to me. The book was well written and had wonderful characters in the storyline. To learn more about this author please check out her Newsletter and you can find her on Facebook. I definitely would recommend this book to everyone. Can't wait to read more books from this author.
It's a sweet story, it made me smile and root for the characters. Tommy is a clever and dreamy child and the characters are fleshed out. I liked the storytelling and the world. A good story Recommended. Many thanks to the publisher for this arc, all opinions are mine
Interesting story however while the ending was expected I felt it was a little flat. It was if the author ran out of steam. Otherwise i enjoyed the story.
