What the Wind Blew In: Even the desert needs a herder

Rate this book
Travis first felt the eyes watching him as he sat alone in his room. His father doesn't believe him. His science teacher has it out for him. The kids at school mostly ignore him. He has one friend in the world-Miguel-a guy who would love to camp outdoors and meet a monster. With an enormous windstorm approaching and a flimsy tent for protection, the desert couldn't get much more dangerous. Or could it?

Travis Talbot lives with his Father and Sister, Gwen, in the small town of White Sage, Arizona. There is also an older Sister, Shelby, who is attending Northern Arizona University.White Sage sits "a hop, half skip and no jumps from the North Rim of the Grand Canyon". To go to school Travis, Gwen and Travis' friend Miguel have to take a school bus into the nearby town of Fredonia, where the "White Sagers" are looked down on.

At the small school Miguel discovers something strange, their science Mrs. Bjorkland has left the science lab door open. A door the teacher never leaves open. And Miguel sneaks a peek only to see tons of weird plants. What is the teacher doing?

This coming weekend is a good one because Dad is going out of town and Travis will watch over Gwen while Miguel comes over for a campout. They'll set up a tent in Travis' back yard. As they set up the tent strange things start to happen. Green eyes appear as the sun goes down, tumble weeds start gathering around the yard at an alarming rate and the yellow school bus with the driver and Mrs. Bjorkland aboard is seen in the vicinity. Thing really get out of hand when Travis starts to hear voices after being stuck by the needles from the tumble weeds. One of Travis' jobs is to burn all the dry tumble weeds but now they are getting the upper hand. What is going on!!!!!!

This book, written by Kent Douglas, is a great read for middle school children. It is a fun read that is a little scary, a little silly and a lot of fun. The story has a goofy middle school type sarcasm that kids will like and yet it promotes the love of family and friends. I think Mr. Douglas has done a very good job writing a book that will encourage kids to read as they discover the joy and fun books can provide. If you have Middle School children(or even older kids) this is a great book to help get kids excited about reading.
