This is a gorgeous, fun guide to drawing and painting flowers. It's one of the more in-depth books on the topic, and I loved the step by step instructions. This is one I'd happily take to our family's art center and play with all day with kids and adults alike.
I read a temporary self-destroying digital ARC of this book for review.
I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.
Drawing and Painting Beautiful Flowers is a beautiful, step-by-step guide book showing you how to sketch and use watercolour to paint different types of flowers. The author uses a three step process to sketch flowers with which I found really useful and easy to use and follow. The watercolour flowers are absolutely stunning and I can't wait to give them a try! I found this such a beautiful, refreshing book and I'm sure it would be beneficial to not only beginners but as a refresher for more advanced sketchers and painters too.
This was exceptional! A beautiful step-by-step guide with detailed instructions inside to follow along with and create some of the most beautiful renderings. I have been water coloring for a few years now, using my own techniques, that honestly are getting rough. Everything I learned in my earlier days has kind of fell to the wayside and this was a nice refresher for technique and practice. It was simply explained and each step was simply painted for all levels of expertise.
This book had a double appeal for me. Flowers make me think of Spring and as my own garden erupts with colour, I thought it would be a lovely read for the season. I am also rather obsessed with flowers and find them fascinating - as I get ready to enter the second year of my Wildlife Conservation Degree, I find myself being drawn more towards the study of plant life and botanical painting. The only issue is that I have found botanical painting to be intimidating - the delicate brush strokes seemed out of reach, even with my background in art. I have discovered Drawing and Painting Beautiful Flowers by Kate Kyehyun Park at just the right time.
Kyehyun Park takes the intimidation out of both watercolour painting and the painting of flowers, by breaking the process down into easy to follow steps (including the brilliant "Three Step Method" for sketching a flower.) Each lesson is clearly laid out and well described; each step being accompanied by a photograph of the process. It is a beautifully illustrated book and a lovely read for Spring.
This is more than a book for those who are starting out in botanical illustration - it also takes you through the basics of watercolour painting and art theory, in a way that is simple and easy to follow. Everything is covered from the equipment you will need, through to painting techniques. It was a great refresher of the techniques I learnt during my own art studies and has given me the confidence to use the methods in my own botanical illustrations. I read an ARC copy of this book, but will also definitely be buying it and I can't wait to apply the techniques to painting the many flowers in my garden this Spring.
Just cannot believe how much this book has details and so much information in this amount of pages!
The instructions are given in such a way that even young readers will find it easy to follow. The information is concise and the presentation is perfect.
Giving 5 stars starting from the cover to the contents. Just go for this book. It will become really helpful for art projects and for decorations for any occasion.
Thank you, Quarto Publishing Group - Quarry, for the advance review copy.
This book begins with chapters on needed materials, sketching and watercolors. There are then different things to draw including simple flowers, flower clusters, and, fruits and potted plants.
Step by step instructions for each project are included. It felt to me as if some of these might be challenging to a complete beginner but, with patience, hopefully much can be achieved.
It’s no surprise that this book on drawing flowers has lovely illustrations. I also liked the author’s message that one should enjoy the process rather than the result.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Quarto-Quarry for this title. All opinions are my own.
The front cover is beautiful, love the colour of the flown this drawn me to book straight away. Even inside the different watercolours flowers are all pretty and bring colour to the book. There is a lot of information in here which will help you to draw and paint each flowers. Shows you step by step how to draw them and paint them. Thank you NetGalley for letting me read this book.
This a beautifully illustrated book that is as fun to look at as it is to read. It gives you step by step instructions on how to draw flowers and then paint them. Great for any artist or just as a pretty coffee table book.
Thank you so much to the author, Quarry Books, and NetGalley for the complimentary ARC! This review contains my honest and unbiased thoughts and opinions. 🌸
Since jr. high, I have loved to doodle, especially flowers. But they were always just that, doodles. Which has been great and they are cute and all but now that I'm wanting to do more with my art, I want to find ways to improve. I was ecstatic when I received a copy from Netgalley to review. I couldn't wait to see what all different flowers were included and attempt to follow the instructions as I improve my drawing.
This book has been fantastic for learning and improving my "doodles", I have learned so much and I definitely feel like my flowers have greatly improved. While I still have much to learn and still need to improve, they are definitely more flower-like than cutesy doodles now.
The art featured within this book is stunning and inspiring, I have enjoyed not only using the book for learning but also just to read and look at all the beautiful art.
The artist, popular Instagram artist Kyehyun Park, provides excellent instructions, breaking things down in easy to follow steps. The techniques used are great for both beginners and those a little more advanced. Thanks to this book, I'm now able to create more realistic flowers and I can't wait to continue learning more.
I love this book and plan to purchase it along with others from the author. Definitely recommend this one for anyone wanting to learn or improve drawing flowers.
If you know the basics of sketching and watercolor, this book will teach you to paint simple flowers. Public school or extension classes can teach you the basics. This book leads the reader/artist a few steps farther.
It begins with simple exercises to help you familiarize yourself with new (or infrequently used) brushes, and to gain control using color and water mixtures. They are extremely helpful; don't skip past them. In fact, I suggest repeating them until you feel comfortable and familiar with each exercise. (So helpful!)
Next, sketching flowers using proper perspective is covered. How many times have you seen a bouquet of flowers all face forward? Answer: never! These simple diagrams show how to move the face of the flower and maintain good proportions. To these, details are added; and suddenly, a delicate beautiful flower is on the paper!
Along with sketching, the book gives you something amazingly valuable; the ratio of water to paint density (carefully explained and demonstrated), so you can paint your flower to match the example in the book! (It is the single most vital lesson I have been missing in every class I have taken, and book I have read.)
This is the first book that has given me confidence that I can actually succeed. The steps are logical and build upon each other. This is a book that will teach, not frustrate; it will excite and light up the budding artist on your shopping list!
5/5 Stars
Thanks to Quarto Publishing & Quarry Books, and NetGalley for the preview of this ebook pdf; the review is voluntary.
Absolutely stunning book. Great for the beginner or immediate that just needs help with floral art. This book did a fantastic job starting at the beginning and for someone like myself that just likes step by step drawing and painting books, I could skip to that part. The first chapter is all about the materials you will need and does a great job explaining the different types of paints, brushes, paper, and basics of art. The second chapter starts with sketching flowers in simple steps. I love that it had the basics to sketching and drawing lines. Next was all about watercolor and the techniques for watercolor painting with a color wheel to help understand warm and cool tones and the impact of colors. The last few chapters were on simple flowers and flower clusters. My favorite part of the entire book were the fruits and potted plants. It made this book stand out and I totally enjoyed the illustrations and painting. I love all books for learning something new and especially when they provided easy to follow step by step instructions.
Kyehyun Park did an excellent job explaining the process through her illustrations and writing. She did not skip steps like sketching a flower and gave some easy beginner flowers to start drawing and water coloring. Thank you Netgalley and Quarry Books for the opportunity to review this wonderfully creative book. Can't wait to purchase this book!
This book provides to its reader exactly what the title promises. It starts with an in-depth look at the materials needed for sketching and watercolouring, then goes on to show the basics of sketching flowers using basic shapes, and how to draw them from different angles. The basics of watercolour are also covered, looking at colour mixing, blending and the colour wheel.
The second part of the book focuses on several projects, including cosmos, lily, foxglove, hydrangea, hibiscus and more. For each project you are shown how to sketch it and taken step-by-step through the process of painting it. There are many clear photographs to take you from blank page to finished painting. This is a very informative book that will take a beginner painter from feeling like they know nothing to completing several beautiful pictures. I recommend this book to anyone wanting to have a go at painting plants and flowers in watercolour.
With thanks to Netgalley and Quarto Publishing for providing an advance review copy. All opinions are my own.
Gorgeously painted watercolor flowers make my heart very very glad. So it was a joy for me to leaf through this book and see all the beautifully rendered flowers. Can't wait to pick up my brushes to try out a few of the projects. What I liked most of all is that step by step instructions with pictorials are given for each type of flower in different positions so they aren't all facing you directly. Maybe what is missing is something similar for all the leaves as well, though there are a couple of those.
I've always thought that some things are better taught by video as it can hard to visualize the steps. Though the instructions are very well written, I was glad to find that at least some of the painting processes can be found in the author's Instagram account. I think that is something that should be done for all painting books. So, a big kudos for Ms Park and I hope all painting authors will emulate her.
5 Stars This is a great book, and I'd recommend it for anyone wanting to draw and paint flowers and it would be a great recommendation for public or school libraries.
I appreciate how the artist breaks down each flower into basic shapes. It makes drawing and painting less intimidating to replicate. I loved how she includes different angles of flowers, so you can make your own bouquet. I was excited to see the color mixing section of this book. There are great tips for mixing/painting with white paint.
After reading Beautiful Flowers, I jumped into drawing and painting flowers. The instructions are clear, the step-by-step directions are easy to follow. The illustrations are lovely and achievable. I really enjoyed reading and practicing exercises from this book. The artist struck a perfect balance of instruction and having fun!
Thank you, NetGalley and Quarry Books, for providing me with a digital ARC for an honest review.
Drawing and Painting Beautiful Flowers by Kyehyun Park is an easily understood, informative, concise guide to drawing and painting flowers. It begins with materials you will need. Park doesn’t just list them. She explains what they are (pencil classifications and when each is used), why to choose one over another (different types of watercolor paper and how each absorbs color differently) and how to choose (different types of watercolor paints and palettes from basic minimum to more expensive supplies.) Then the lessons begin. There are suggested drawing exercises and learning shapes. You’ll understand the color wheel, hues, shading, and glazing techniques. Then come the flowers! Although Park’s talent shines in the illustrations, she breaks down each into easy to duplicate steps. This beautiful book is intended for all artists from beginner to advanced. 5 stars.
Thank you to NetGalley, Quarto Publishing Group – Quarry and Kyehyun Park for this ARC.
I appreciated the three-step drawing process the artist shares and utilizes throughout the book. It helps the artist begin with basic shapes and then add details, creating flowers and plants that are more realistic, yet not overwhelming or intimidating to achieve. I think drawing with accuracy is the most valuable part of this book. I love the variety of flowers and flower-shapes that is represented. The watercolor tips are basic and suitable for beginners. The author is very specific in the steps she takes as she paints, making it easy for the reader to follow directions and learn through experience rather than experimentation.

This book is outstanding in every possible way! The book is gorgeous to look at, and the author provides quite detailed information and step by step instructions on how to sketch and paint a wide variety of realistic flowers and plants, with tips, and encouragement along the way.
As a former technical document writer, I know how hard it is to break-down detailed information and make it understandable to audiences with widely differing variations of both subject knowledge and experience. Ms. Park could not have done a better job!!
This book would make a great addition to any artist's or crafter's library no matter what their level. I recommend it highly!
My thanks to Quarry Books for allowing me to read an e-ARC of this book via NetGalley. I believe the book is scheduled for publication on 6/14/22. All opinions expressed in this review are my own and are freely given.
Who doesn’t want to be Drawing and Painting Beautiful Flowers? With this book, it is an attainable dream for even the most unartistic people. And the results are beautiful and professional enough to hang on your wall.
Beginning with arcs and straight lines, this book is as step-by-step as it gets. It has an illustration for every step as well as written instructions. It even suggests supplies for both drawing and watercolor painting.
I’ve read many books on drawing and painting. But none were as foolproof as Drawing and Painting Beautiful Flowers. If you have artistic or creative aspirations (but no readily apparent talent), you must read this book. 5 stars and a favorite!
Thanks to Quarry Books and NetGalley for a digital review copy of the book.
Thank you NetGalley, the author, and the publisher for the opportunity to read and give an honest review of this book.
Beautiful Flowers is a great book for the beginner interested in the watercolor painting of flowers of all types. The book gives a brief discussion of materials: brushes, paints, paper. It also discusses color theory and some basic watercolor techniques.
An especially useful part is instructions for drawing flowers before beginning to paint. This gives one the ability to take any flower and draw it. The illustrations are clear and colorful. They give the steps needed to create several types of flowers.
If you are thinking of trying your hand at watercolor flower painting, this is the book to help you get started. It would make a great addition to your shelf of art instruction books.
This book shows very simplified watercolour techniques that I think would be great for those new to this medium. There are lots of sample flower varieties showing stages from beginning drawing to finished piece. Once one has proven these techniques for themselves, I can certainly see how these could lead to more detailed renderings as one progresses along their path. Very clear instructions for each step, and good description of the basic supplies needed to keep building their skills. Thank you too the publisher for providing this advanced copy!
This book is not only beautiful to flick through but gives such easy to follow instructions it made me want to pick up my watercolours and have a go.
I love the garden and the chance to sketch and paint flowers is something I will enjoy. The book will be informative for both the beginner and the more experienced painter.
The author does a first class job of explaining the process needed to master the skills needed to enjoy drawing and water colouring botanical painting.
I look forward to delving into this brilliant book and hopefully enjoying all the paintings I will try.
I, really loved the book. If you are a beginner and want to learn Watercolor Painting, then you cannot miss this one. The graphics are good and the artist has perfectly described each and every step. Also, materials to be used are also listed. The book has so beautiful flowers with beautiful description, that, a non artist would also want to paint them. As an artist myself, definitely, I am going to try these flowers. Would love to give 5 stars for the book.
I received a copy of this book through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This is a great book!
This book has a lot of information on creating flowers and plants. There's information on choosing materials, colors, and how to shade. The book touches on using pencils and watercolors to create pictures of flowers and plants. There's a lot of helpful information on how to plan your picture and carry it out.
This is a comprehensive introductory guide to drawing and painting flowers with clear instructions for buying materials, drawing flowers in simple steps, and lots of exercises. The images are gorgeous and should motivate anyone who loves dabbling in art! However, it is always a bit difficult to follow instructions from ebooks. I will probably buy the paperback.
I received this free ebook from NetGalley in return for an honest review.
Beautiful pictures and excellent, step by step instructions. Makes me want to pick up my watercolours again. This book would be a great primer for someone who has never painted before, but also for a novice painter eager to learn some new techniques. Would make a great gift for a budding artist.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for sharing this ARC with me
One thing that sets this book apart from so many others is that Kyehyun goes into drawing the flower itself. Many instruction books teach the trace method. I loved how she simplified the forms so that you can take her lessons and apply them to pretty much any flower. Her painting methods are simplified too, but have stunning results. Overall very enjoyable.
Drawing and Painting.... this books simplifies a daunting task of watercolor flowers by breaking down shapes into simple forms and explaining each flower as a process of 3 stages. Great for beginners or intermediate artists. Would love to see another edition with a better variety of flower styles. Author explains this realistic flower painting well.
Lovely unassuming tutorial that provides basic line exercises and tutorials on drawing and painting tulips, daffodils, poppies, flowering maples, lilies, coneflowers, cosmos, balloon flowers, hibiscus, canola, lily of the valley, hydrangeas, foxglove, orange blossoms, olive branches, and potted pilea.
This book is great, really helpful to me at the moment as I am experimenting with watercolour. There are loads of great tips in here, which have helped me develop.
Thank you NetGalley for my complimentary copy in return for my honest review.
Awesome book. Author introduces a new and simpler way to draw flowers. Helped me get over the fear of drawing flowers especially cluster. each step is demonstrated and well explained. As a beginner to drawing and watercolor it helped me get comfortable with both medium.
