The third book in Jo Lindley’s self-illustrated picture book series is a charming look at the fun things that you can do in the summer but also how to handle it when you feel angry and everything gets on top of you because things keep going wrong. I enjoyed Lindley’s illustrations and the friendship of the four Little Seasons really comes through such that I’d be happy to read the other three books in this series.
With summer just around the corner what better time than now to introduce children to the seasons whilst at the same time encouraging them to think about their emotions and feelings. Many of our emotions are affected by the seasons and the weather they bring after all. I am sure many of us see our children happy and laughing when outside in the summer sun but grumpy and gloomy in the dark days of winter rain? Jo Lindley has the perfect series of books to see them through the year, through each of the seasons. This one, her latest, is Hello Summer. Its companions, already out, are Hello Spring, Hello Autumn with Hello Winter to come.
With the sun shining down on them the four seasons have decided it is time to go to the seaside, to the beach but poor summer is feeling all hot and bothered. The problem is that although the plan to stop along the way for some fun and games is a good one it is filled with mishaps. First a gust of wind sweeps their ball away, cheeky squirrels run off with their sandwiches when they stop for a picnic, and can you guess what the sea does to their sandcastle once they reach the beach? Summer almost lets his anger get the better of him, but Spring has some good advice and saves the day. This book is a delight to share, would be perfect for the school classroom and helps children both enjoy a story and consider how to handle challenging emotions.
