Superb review of ancient settlement from Palaeolithic to Roman times. Recommended for anyone who considers archaeology ‘dry’, because this book is anything but, keeping the interest of this reader throughout. As he points out, knowledge and interpretation of these sites is constantly changing, so much so that this book is a complete update of the author’s previous book of the same title.
