The Legend of Dollaretta Vol.1 - La Vi en Noir et Blanc

Rate this book
This version is printed completely in black and white. The 17-year-old (vampire) Demi Chevalier is angry, fed-up and socially indifferent, yet she has accepted that Elizabeth Rose Convent will be her home for the next two years. She anticipates many hindrances, but does not expect her curiosity to be so deeply ignited by what she is told of the Convent's infamous legend of Dollaretta. According to the legend, those who speak of Dollaretta will find themselves fated to peril, and incidentally, the first student to tell Demi about the legend, finds herself in a grave situation. Demi refuses to acknowledge the strange coincidence, although there is a part of her that begins to feel a deep-rooted sense of paranoia. For the next few weeks Demi experiences vivid nightmares about the legend then as if to test her better judgement, she is confronted by a student who is convinced that the legend is real. Despite the eerie and suggestive nature of Demi's nightmares, she tries to tell herself that paranoia is to be expected under the given circumstances. The girls in the dormitory (Kea, June, Lorain and Angelica) begin to notice Demi's strange fascination with the dead student, but they're unaware that Demi is convinced that the murderous and mythical vampiress (Dollaretta) is very much real and haunting the convent.

When I was first recommended this comic by a friend I was rather reluctant and sceptical. We often see vampire stories being told in movies, books and so on, since their rise in popularity. Due to this over-saturation of the medium I was at first expecting "The Legend of Dollertta" to be generic or at least similar to other vampire stories. But I was happily wrong.
I discovered that this story has an incredibly unique and original take on vampire mythology and lore.
Admittedly this is was captivated me at first, that strong sense of mystery in the background looming over the readers head, forcing the reader to ask question after question which leads them to become interested and ultimately invested in this world. This was the first element that drew me into this story.
The character design is fantastically deep. Each character feels 'real'; their actions and motivations fit with their well established personalities and traits, which makes them believable and engaging as far as characters go.
Though a bit slow at the start, the pacing of the story is masterfully done. It was around chapter 3 when I become deeply invested in the story. Each chapter after that brings an extra piece to the puzzle, the mystery.
Each chapter is relevant and at no point is their any filler or unnecessary exposition that takes the reader out of the story. Instead the reader is captivated by the subtle nature of the writing style. Giving the reader hints without giving anything away. This is an aspect of "The Legend of Dolleretta" that I find most admirable. The writer does not belittle or 'handhold' the reader during the story. The story respects its readers intelligence and the story prompts the reader to ask questions about the plot and character motivations.
The art style is very unique and distinct, especially when it comes to the world and characters.
The world art style is consistently thematically appropriate. The style will change dramatically to emphasis the theme of certain areas. The characters are emotive, expressive and each have a unique look and temperament which is conveyed smoothly through the art style.

After every chapter I was left wanting more...

After the great introduction, I was very intrigued and expecting a nice pace, but unfortunately I felt it was a bit of a slow start. This isn't to say that it didn't eventually get its hooks in; it just took a little longer than I would have liked. It is immediately apparent as you progress, that more and more detail in the images is added from chapter to chapter. In this regard, I loved the art style in the introduction, but following that, it was a bit plain until around chapter 3 when the world really started coming to life. Luckily the storytelling is able to carry the reader's interest through.
The antics and interactions between the girls in the hostel is fun, while slowly creating an air of mystery and developing the relationships at the same time. The character development under these circumstances, is great to experience and the characters themselves are quite relatable.
Overall, a bit of a slow start but absolutely worth getting to the later chapters. Consider my curiosity piqued. I'll definitely be picking up the next volume.

Vampires aren't anything new and some may say they're oversaturated. However, Cherry turns what could be another generic Vampire story into something unique and special. The Legend of Dollaretta doesn't mess around. Readers are thrown into an age-old mystery from the first page and there is no downtime. Everything connects to the overall story in some way, and for its first volume, the Legend of Dollaretta sets-up more questions than it answers. With that, it makes me want to come back for more, and that I will. I'm looking forward to reading the second volume soon.

The artwork is creepy and gothic, helping to set the tone. Usually, I'm not a fan of black and white comics but it works well for the story being told. If you're on the fence about reading the Legend of Dollaretta, I recommend it. Especially if you want to see a different take on Vampires.
