Kellemes, a kifejezetten episztolografikus művekkel szemben könnyed, olvasmányos hangvételben komponált munka, ismeretterjesztésre tökéletes. Az antik görög kultúra határait szándékosan kitágítva, többé-kevésbé elmosódottként kezelve a szerző remek bevezetést nyúlt a görög nyelven írt levelekről, légyen az magán- vagy üzleti levél, episztolába oltott filozófiai traktátus vagy fiktív személyhez intézett szerelmi levél-költemény, nem beszélve az Újszövetség és iratkörének elhíresült leveleiről. A bevezetőben nyújtott általános áttekintést az egyes levéltípusok (nevezzük őket így az egyszerűség kedvéért) alaposabb, beszédes példákkal gazdagon illusztrált ismertetése követi. Muir külön gondot fordít arra, hogy az egyes levelekben foglaltakat megfelelő kontextusba helyezze, hátterüket kellőképpen megmagyarázza. Nem szakbarbároknak, ám az Ókor iránt lelkesedő olvasótársaimnak jó szívvel ajánlom.
