The book regales the legendary tale of King Arthur: how he became king and the great adventures and conquests he had during his reign. The story is gripping and fascinating. Students would be easily intrigued and captivated by this epic story. It is a fictional story, a legend, that has been a part of European history for centuries. This literature would be important to include in a unit of study about the Middle Ages, because a part of truly understanding a culture and time period is learning about the stories that are important to those people. The stories people tell reflect their culture's beliefs and values, so students would benefit from reading about the legend of Kind Arthur. Integrating literature within social studies also provides an opportunity to teach reading strategies to students while teaching new historical content as well. I would use this book mostly with students in grades 4th through 6th. If read aloud, this could work for students in 3rd grade, however, older students would be able to read it independently.
