From award winning screenwriter, Julie Howe and artist Chason Matthams, comes this vibrantly illustrated, heartwarming story of how one little girl's kindness makes a positive impact on the life of another.
Catty Wompus is a lonely girl who believes happiness is achieved by wearing fancy clothes and being surrounded by material possessions. But her unhappiness and lack of friends is distressing to one classmate, Lucy Hope. When Lucy makes it her mission to help Catty see the light of friendship and that true happiness lies within ourselves, Catty Wompus blossoms before our eyes.
Change really can take place with one act of kindness. And that one act becomes two as Catty pays her valuable lesson forward in the second book of the series: Catty Wompus and the New Kid.
Julie "Jules" Howe is a California screenwriter, producer and children's book author who never met a story she didn’t like, especially stories for kids. Since she worships at the altar of Shel Silverstein, it’s not surprising her favorite book writing genre is rhyming verse.
Her first children’s book and Hoffer Award winner, Catty Wompus: A Tale of Friendship, is about a lonely girl who learns the true value of friends. It’s based on a childhood experience that never left her. The sequel, Catty Wompus and The New Kid, takes the lessons learned, one step further. In 2015, Catty and her pals were brought to life in a musical television pilot called The Adventures of Catty Wompus that she hopes will become a series.
In addition to the Catty Wompus books, Julie is an award winning screenwriter with awards and placements from top-ranking film festivals and screenplay competitions such as the Austin Film Festival, BlueCat, Nicholl Fellowship, Page International Screenplay competition and Fresh Voices. She recently had the honor of being included in the Austin Film Festival’s Inaugural Screenwriters to Watch article in MovieMaker magazine, July 19, 2016.
Julie holds a Feature Film Writing Certificate from UCLA Extension as well as the Academy of Film Writing. She's a founding board member of the Cinematic Arts and Technology Foundation of Cal State Monterey Bay whose goal is to empower at-risk youth through year-round community programs that investigate, educate and celebrate the cinematic arts.
Julie resides on the beautiful Monterey Peninsula with her husband and two painfully cute canine pals, Tyson and Lambchop.
This is a much needed topic to be discussed amongst children from Kindergarten to 8th grade and even into high school if they haven't figured this out yet. Having the latest Toys and accessories doesn't make you a better person. This story shows that true friendship doesn't cost a thing. Looking forward to more books in this series.
What a great way to teach about friendship and it's true value and a good, quick reminder to an adult. I really liked it.
If only I had children to raise again. I would read stories like this to them. I was just getting into the story and then it ended, . Or rather it was the beginning!
I got this book for my 10 year old and we ALL loved the story! Every kid needs to learn that things do not buy happiness...only true friendship can make kids happy! A great story!
A fantastic children's book! I loved the message of the book (adults can learn from this also) and the way it was written made it easy to read out loud.
