RICHARD SCARRY is one of the world's best-loved children's authors EVER! In his extraordinary career, Scarry illustrated over 150 books, many of which have never been out of print. His books have sold over 100 million copies around the world, and are currently published in over twenty languages. No other illustrator has shown such a lively interest in the words and concepts of early childhood. Richard Scarry was posthumously awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society of Illustrators in 2012.
This book was ok. I liked how many different professions it displayed. It was actually a long book. I found myself getting a little bored. My daughter definitely got bored - she laid down and started playing with her stuffed animals instead of listening to the book. I had to stop a couple times to get her to refocus.
What I did like was that just about each profession had alliteration with the name of the character doing the job and the words used to describe it. There were lots of pictures, they just weren't super eye catching. Or perhaps they weren't eye catching because there were so many pictures on the page. I'm not sure.
I feel like this book could have been better if it wasn't quite as long with as many careers displayed on each page. We just got really bored about half way through. It definitely does it's job displaying just how many different types of jobs there are, but for a kids book, it was much too long and wordy.
I loved some of Richard Scarry's books when I was little, all the details, chaos, and busyness. I still kind of like those things, but it can be a fairly disturbing world. For instance, a pig is a butcher (what meat are they eating!?), then there's a hotdog vendor who's an owl... that works right next to an egg/chicken restaurant! Maybe Scarry just had a very morbid sense of humor? Hmm, all the meat shown seems to be in hotdog and tubed sausage form, so maybe it's all vegan. :) But I'm not sure what to say about the restaurant clearly serving eggs right next to the seemingly sapient owl or the chickens at the farm that are clearly "just" regular chickens.
Anyway, I mostly love some Scarry books for nostalgia's sake (there are a few I don't like because there are some pretty blatant racial and cultural stereotypes in them).
Fiction Kindergarten-1st This was a very good book. I like how the author illustrates how important each character is to the community. I think it is a good book for kids to see different jobs that they could partake in when they get older. I really enjoyed the illustrations and the content of the story.
Postman Pig delivers mail to the citizens and businesses of Busytown, ending with his own home. Love the illustrations, filled with action and scenes of everyday life. Love the clever names of the people of Busytown.
Your child will be introduced to more than 60 different occupations in this fun filled book as postman pig goes around town delivering mail. The illustrations provide hours of entertainment and or discussion....and who doesn't love searching for a stray pickle on every page?! Although this book does cover a lot of info, its nice, neat storyline is less daunting than some of Richard Scarry's other jam packed books.
A classic reissued for a new audience and why not! Richard Scarry’s books are quite wonderful with their detail, their vibrant illustrations and fun-filled stories.
We all love a postman and now you can all meet Postman Pig who loves to deliver all his letters and packages around Busytown - see the police station, the doctors office, the library and then try and spot more of the places Postman Pig is going to visit.
A brilliant book for children to enjoy time after time.
I'm willing to admit that I'm super biased on the review of this book. It was the very first picture book I ever remember reading all on my own. Reading it for the first time in over 25 years was a total treat, to say nothing about trying to find all the pickles hidden on every page of the book.
It is absolutely criminal that Postman Pig has been out of print for decades now.
This is my favorite children's book. You follow Postman Pig around as his delivers mail to all of Busytown. On every page you get to find a hidden pickle and on one page the pickle truck tips and you get to find the whole truckload!
Postman Pig has a busy day. He delivers lots of mail and today is a special day, too! A fun read full of Richard Scarry humor and kids love to pour of his pictures!
