When I first chose this book, I was skeptical to read it since a few letters (eg. letter from Narayan Murthy to his daughter Akshata) had gone viral on the internet with lots of negative comments about publicizing the private things in life. But, The foreword by Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, followed by the very first letter by Ajay Piramal to his daughter Nandini completely changed my thoughts about the book. What you are today, directly or indirectly is because of your family. It is a wonderful feeling to know what your parents actually think about you and how we changed their world when we came to this world through them, how much our parents strived hard to fulfill our smallest dreams, what legacy they wanted to set for us etc. etc. etc. Neatly written by Sudha Menon, definitely, a must-read book. I actually thought of writing a letter to my parents after reading this book, to thank them for what I am today and their consistent efforts in carving me and my future!

Today, I am going to talk about a book which has given me an immense pleasure during my recent journey to Nashik. For the 5 hours that I was in train, this book was my companion. Rather than wasting time in watching greenery and never ending farms, I spent my time in reading Sudha Menon's 2nd book- "Legacy". My father kept saying that what's the use of traveling and tripping if you have to read books during journey too and I kept smiling and doing what I love in life- Reading, reviewing and writing. The 258 pages book also has a tagline "Letters from eminent parents to their daughters". But let me tell you, it is not only for daughters to read but for everyone of any age group.

Sudha Menon is the bestselling author of Leading Ladies: Women Who Inspire India and a journalist with over twenty years of experience. She has worked with the Independent, the Hindu Business Line, and Mint, writing on politics, women, health, and business. Sudha is the founder of Get Writing!, a workshop for potential writers, and is also passionate about Writing In the Park, an initiative that she has started to get people out of their homes and spend time in the outdoors, writing in public parks and gardens. Sudha has been invited to several educational institutions and corporate campuses as a speaker where she talks to women's networks about leadership and diversity issues. She lives in Pune with her family.

The synopsis of the book says:-
A compilation of personal letters from Indias most prominent personalities, sharing with us some of their most intimate experiences and profound insights on life

Narayana Murthy, Chanda Kochhar, Kishore Biyani, Zia Mody, K.V. Kamath, Ajay Piramal, Amit Chandra, Ganesh Natrajan, Renuka Ramnath, P.P. Chhabria, Pradeep Bhargava, Deep Anand, Capt. Gopinath, Mallika Sarabhai, Shaheen Mistri, Sanjeev Kapoor, Jatin Das, and Prakash Padukone They say a daughter may outgrow your lap, but she will never outgrow your heart. In Legacy, noted journalist and author Sudha Menon brings forth a rare collection of personal and evocative letters from parents to their daughters. Through their fearless approach to life, love, and overcoming obstacles, these icons from the world of business, arts, films, food, and sports share with us their experience and wisdom as they pass them on to their daughters.
Deeply moving and thought provoking, Legacy is a remarkable collection of life lessons that will delight and inspire at the same time.

Talking about the authoress, I don't know how I didn't know about her first book till date. I saw her session with Mr. Sanjeev Kapoor at India Non Fiction fest 2 weeks ago and she was so charming during the whole 45 minutes that I decided to go through both her books. I started with her latest release and seriously speaking, the book is as awesome as it could have been. The concept that she has decided to go with is so unique that I don't think if she wouldn't have attempted, anyone else could have in next 2-3 years. The personalities that she has selected for writing letters to their respective daughter(s) are so varied, different, heard and unheard of that you like to continue with the book. Everyone's experience is so different from others that every letter is a new road to walk up on. The generosity with which each letter is carved out for the lovely girls/women is commendable. I don't know what's the real role of Sudha Menon in the book but I'm thankful to her for struggling to get time out of these personalities' busy schedule and bringing out something that has taught me so much.

The cover page of the book is itself like a light monsoon which takes us to a different world altogether. The back cover page also has some beautifully written reviews. Hard cover makes this book more special. Deepika's note to her father, Mr. Prakash Padukone(on the first page) just after I opened the book was a wonderful surprise. I am going to list some of my favorite letters- Ajay Piramal's letter gives inspiration while Amit Chandra's is quite emotional and made me cry initially. Chanda Kochhar letter was another piece that inspired me through her journey of her success in ICICI bank. In Ajnya, K. V. Kamath's daughter, I saw my mother somewhere. Hence that letter is another lovely piece for me. :-) Mr. Narayan Murthy has written as if he is not a Superstar in IT sector but a middle-class man like my mother. I loved his attitude. Mr. Prakash Padukone's letter is quite different and I also love him personally for being enough bold-minded to allow his daughter in a glamorous industry.

Renuka Ramnath's letter which tells how she kept working after her husband's demise made me want to meet her. I seriously wish that I meet her some day. I will touch her feet and get blessings. She is a superwoman indeed. Mr. Sanjeev Kapoor's letter came after a long time and it was straight from his heart. I loved how he has written everything without getting much details about his success story. I loved a part where he tells how he remained adamant to learn Sanskrit even when his school said that they can't teach him because he was the only one who was opting for it. That was the best part I read in the book with due respect to every one who wrote about their characters. The last letter by Zia Mody is a wonderful end to the book. It is enough heart-warming that you want to call author and ask her to release the second part to this book too. :-)

The photographs of some personalities with their daughters in the end is beautiful but I would have loved if it could have come with the respective letters rather than together in the end. The book is more about content and hence you might miss the entertainment that one expects in the book. Rest, I would say that Sudha Menon is an authoress whom everyone would love to read and her books will definitely be in the shelves of the readers who love motivational, biographical and auto-biographical books. I wish to read her first book- Leading Ladies soon. This 258-pages book is a gift to all the Indians who want to do big in life. I rate this book- 4 out of 5.

Thanks.

A wonderful concept for a book. It was so nice to read letters from eminent Indian personalities to their kids as to what would they leave them as their legacy. While the letters themselves were a treat to read, i also enjoyed The author’s brief descriptions about their life. A great book

When I first read about this book, I was instantly drawn to it. Distinguished people writing letters to their daughters; the concept appealed to me dearly. It held a lot of potential to learn and be inspired. I was also curious about what lessons or advice these high achievers would pass on to their daughters.

The book lived up to its promise.

I loved the cover page instantly. It has a warm appeal to it. Foreword is by Kiran Mazumdar Shaw. It is inspiring to read her write about her unconventional choice of career, encouraged by her father, and struggle during the initial years as a lady brewer in a man’s world.

Notes by Deepika Padukone and Nandita Das to their respective famous dads, on the insides of the cover, are heartwarming.

The book is quite well-organized. The writers have been featured in the alphabetical order of their names. Each letter is preceded by a note about the person writing the letter, which beautifully sets the mood for the letter and helps the reader relate to the letter in a better way. Each letter is a reflection of the letter writer’s own journey through life, his learnings and values that he or she holds close.

Ajay Piramal, Amit Chandra, Capt. Gopinath, Chanda Kochhar, Deep Anand, Ganesh Natarajan, Jatin Das,, Kishore Biyani, K.V. Kamath, Mallika Sarabhai, Narayana Murthy, Pradeep Bhargava, Prakash Padukone, P.P. Chhabria, Renuka Ramnath, Sanjeev Kapoor, Shaheen Mistri and Zia Modi make the 18 personalities who have contributed in this book to pass on the legacy of learnings, values, beliefs and wisdom, not only to their own daughters but to inspire all the Indian women at large.

Chanda Kochhar thinks adaptability is a great quality to possess, while Captain Gopinath demonstrates by his own life to reinvent oneself constantly; Amit Chandra highlights the power of wealth and how not to get carried away with it, while Kishore Biyani stresses on the importance of people, relationships and human behavior; Mallika Sarabhai advises her daughter to be fearless about what she can do while Shaheen Mistri crafts a beautiful poem for her daughters about empathy and equality – there are several such gems in the book.

Though each letter is a lesson in life-skills, my personal favorites are letters by Captain Gopinath and Kishore Biyani. I was pleasantly surprised at the modern outlook of Mr Biyani when he is perceived as rooted in traditions. He came across as a very open-minded individual who held both his daughters in high esteem for their capabilities. Captain Gopinath’s ability to rise from the ashes every time as a phoenix comes across very clearly. The way he reinvents himself constantly is exemplary for everyone.

What stands out is that each one of them is rooted in their past, stress on the importance of giving back to the society, the need to be there for the family, and shower love and respect on their daughters as independent and capable individuals.

It is easy to get intimidated by these stalwarts for their lofty achievements but when they write to their daughters, one gets to know their real, warm personalities and concerns of an ordinary parent.

I certainly recommend it wholeheartedly.

This book is an inspirational collection of letters from well known celebrities to their daughters. It is very well written, with brief introductions of each of the writers, beautiful heartfelt letters containing love, advice, personal history, and gratitude that these people have for their offspring. It is inspiring to note that most of these stars, have faced adverse situations and triumphed over their misfortune; emerging stronger eventually. All of them have learnt from their parents and are here, extolling pearls of wisdom for the next generation. A very good gift for anyone facing a downward spiral of depression in these trying times.

Easy and quick read. This book is a collection of letters and two poems from eminent parents to their daughters. Each letter preceded by the parent and their introduction. Collection has very interesting people self-made, each one its own merit. Reading the letters not only brings out the affection to their children and the values they leave it children.

This is one of the most unique books I have ever read. Why? Because it is a compilation of letters written by eminent [read: businessmen & industrialists primarily] parents to their daughters. The book was released in 2013; at an opportune time perhaps for India which is currently grappling with how to protect its daughters. And it is fascinating to realize that, in this day and age of e-mails and watsapp messages, these individuals have actually taken time out of their busy schedule to write these letters.

The book's blurb reads: "They say a daughter may outgrow your lap, but she will never outgrow your heart. Deeply moving and thought provoking, Legacy is a remarkable collection of life lessons that will delight and inspire at the same time."

The book features letters written by 18 persons - Ajay Piramal, Amit Chandra, Capt. Gopinath, Chanda Kochhar, Deep Anand, Ganesh Natarajan, Jatin Das, Kishore Biyani, K.V. Kamath, Mallika Sarabhai, Narayana Murthy, Pradeep Bhargava, Prakash Padukone, P.P. Chhabria, Renuka Ramnath, Sanjeev Kapoor, Shaheen Mistri and Zia Mody.

Most of the letters have common themes running through them - the virtues of following certain values such as compassion and gratitude, the belief in a higher force, the willingness to give back to society and to live one's life only by one's passion.

I enjoyed reading the letters written by the mothers more, maybe because they did not expect their daughters to take a backseat in their careers for the sake of the family or to sacrifice for the family. That was the most disappointing part for me. These men who are leaders in their individual capacities and head such big organizations have such limited and traditional thinking even in these times! And if they expect their daughters to take a backseat, how can we ever expect them to be empathetic to the problems of women employees in their companies?

Sample Ajay Piramal's advice to his daughter Nandini: "But let me caution you that if a marriage has to succeed, you will have to sacrifice more than your husband." K.V. Kamath's letter is confusing. At one place he says, "Often in the world, women who are homemakers are not given the same place in society that a working woman is given." At another, however, "Your mother has a strong mind of her own but she has chosen to take on a supportive role in our family." Narayana Murthy tells his daughter: "The world admires a woman who brings a sense of balance to all the three responsibilities - being a loving wife, a caring mother and a competent career woman."

In contrast, the letters written by Renuka and Zia stood out. Renuka tells her daughter Ramya that it is important for her not to forget and give up her identity and to never stop living short of her own full potential. Zia exhorts her three daughters to live their lives with dignity and self-respect; she also highlights why it is important for women to have careers of their own - both to fulfill their intellectual needs and to keep them financially independent.

Almost all these leaders have had humble beginnings which led them to appreciate the value of hard work and money. Most of them are grateful to their parents for imbibing in them values and traits which have helped them become what they are today.

The book also has interesting little tidbits which are revealed through the individual letters. For instance, when Renuka joined VJTI in 1978, she was only the 4th girl in the institute's 99-year-old history. Nandita Das' father Jatin owns over 6,500 pankhas (fans) and is on the way to setting up a dedicated fan museum in Delhi.

Trivia: Of the 25 daughters referred to in the book, the names of 13 (50%) being with 'A' :)

I enjoyed reading the book because it gave me a deeper understanding of the background of each individual and made me appreciate them more. Often what we read in the media is only the surface; through this book, Sudha has been able to scratch beneath the surface. There were so many things which I did not know about most of the parents; these came out in the letters they wrote.

Maybe, Sudha could have ended with a letter to her daughter Nayantara :) And, I hope, she's planning Part II because I already have a wishlist of people whom I want to see writing to their daughters - Anand Mahindra, Adi Godrej, Manmohan Shetty, Shiv Nadar, Nandan Nilekani, Gulzar, Amitabh Bachchan, Aditya Puri, Anu Aga, Pritish Nandy, Mukesh Ambani, Kumar Mangalam Birla - to name a few!!!

Go read Legacy - it is one of those books which will give you a glimpse into the personal lives of these leaders in their own words - what drives them on a daily basis and what are their hopes and aspirations for their daughters. It is a no-holds barred account for which Sudha must definitely be applauded.

Menon’s Legacy grabs attention immediately. The cover jacket is beautifully illustrated, perfectly capturing the essence of the novel. The back blurb is well crafted, with exactly just the right hint of nostalgia. And the idea.
Oh, the idea.
It’s captivating. In today’s super-fast world of emails, whatsapp and SMS, the idea of writing a letter to one’s daughter, with your heart splashed across the pages for the entire world to see…it hooked me.
No wonder it took me only two seconds to move this book to the top of my humongous TBR pile.

Legacy by Sudha Menon
They say a daughter may outgrow your lap, but she will never outgrow your heart.
The list of writers is impressive: Narayana Murthy, Chanda Kochhar, Kishore Biyani, Zia Mody, K.V. Kamath, Ajay Piramal, Amit Chandra, Ganesh Natrajan, Renuka Ramnath, P.P. Chhabria, Pradeep Bhargava, Deep Anand, Capt. Gopinath, Mallika Sarabhai, Shaheen Mistri, Sanjeev Kapoor, Jatin Das, and Prakash Padukone.

But in Legacy, they are not world renowned personalities, or billionnaire CEOs of companies that are keeping the Indian economy alive. They are appas and mummas of their little girls, wanting to protect and let go, both at the same time.
Bitiya, you owe me nothing except your own happiness at all times.
These people and their stories are live examples that it is, in fact, possible to succeed in the world without compromising on your ideals of integrity, honesty and kindness. There are common threads running through all the letters: that success after stepping on someone’s shoes is not success; that howsoever big may be the business, family and loved ones should never come second; of always following your heart; and that in the end, our purpose in life is to make this world a better place. Humility is a virtue these parents are not willing to compromise on, and unashamedly admit to their own mistakes so that their children know better.

I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to my friends and family. My only peeve would be Sudha Menon. While there is little of her own writing in the book, she does introduce the personality before the letter is revealed. However, more often than not, she ends up using some lines from the particular parent’s letter in the introduction – by merely modifying a few words here and there.

Fortunately, it can be overlooked when you have such a vast treasure of love and guidance just waiting for your highlighter pen.

Sudha Menon's book "Legacy" is all about the much hyped parent-daughter relationship and their interaction through letters in this most advanced world where e-mails and social networking are prevailing as legends.

Each letter from the "eminent" parents to their daughters actually look the same and is more like a short personal history and set backs in their life.

The book will look like a monotonous pack of letters when you complete it.

Letters from Zia Mody and Narayan Murthy look a little different and a bit humorous when compared to others beating the monotonous feeling.

The book gives you a more brief personal life of the "eminent" parents and little focuses on their bonding with their off-springs.

Look out if you want to know the personal life of the eminent persons and keep your expectations low if you are waiting for a strong message or something to be given, as you may complete the book with the same expectation not yet fulfilled !!!

Read on a flight. Light and engaging. Full of inspiration and ideas. Interestingly it doesn't give external inspiration as much as it helps one channel ones own. Reason is there's something in these letters everyone can connect with - May it be the parental bond , pure love , numerous values , or stories of struggle and victory and faith and continuous learning. All these letters are from different eminent people , yet the book is a smooth read, never does it feel like a collage or even a string of similar pearls. It feels like a story with different- hued chapters. Enough said, it's a good read and I'll be presenting my loved ones with this book next which is testimony enough :)

Legacy by Sudha Menon is the compilation of letters written by some eminent and respected celebrities to their daughters. Parents be they famous or not always have the same concerns about their offspring something which became apparent to me after reading all the letters. And all want their children to grow to become fine individual.

Some of the letters were outstanding. In fact reading Zia Mody's letter made me nostalgic about my own conversation with my mother just before my marriage. She writes the letter like a traditional mother.

I loved the book. This is simply one of those few books that I will treasure always. Legacy will be loved not just for the sheer idea of bringing together inspirational personalities from diverse fields together to write a very informal personal letter and showing the world the other side to them but because there was an emotional connect from the moment i read the blurb.

Well, reading Legacy was a completely amazing experience. New genre altogether!! The way in which sudha has collected letters is just awesome. One could essentially relate to each and every letter. So many take aways - what to do and what not to do! Letters throw light on various problems a daughter may go through and the clever ways to handle them. Last but not the least - Father's suggestions/advice are a must read for all the daughters :)
