Two girls on the road to self-destruction. A village upon the brink of collapse. A past which refuses to die.
The beginning of an epic four-part horror serial.
At seventeen-years-old, Jennifer should have the world at her feet. Instead, she’s an ex-heroin addict living in a council estate with Tony, her boyfriend and former dealer. Shunned by her family and friends, she dreams of something greater than she’s been given.
Beautiful and strange, Ebony has moved in across the street. She’s just lost the one person in her lonely existence to cancer. She’s also a centuries old vampire, struggling to cope with murderous outbursts and the desire to be something more.
When these two lost souls meet, an unusual friendship begins.
But with the news of Morris, Tony’s sadistic best friend and drug-dealing partner, being released from prison, Jennifer knows it’s only a matter of time before his path of vengeance leads to her and Ebony, too.
With a cast of memorable characters, a village full of secrets, and a gripping story, The Fragile Things is a layered tale of friendship, hope, survival and what it truly means to be human.
4.5 stars I didn’t read The Fragile Things part 1 so I was a bit comprehensive about reading part 2. Would I feel completely lost without knowing what happened in the previous book or is this a standalone book? Jennifer’s dream immediately grabbed me in the beginning pages so I was hoping this was a standalone book. Grasping for air, Jennifer scrambles out of the hole she found herself in. As the snakes weave around her ankles and the smell of death fills the air, Jennifer surveys her surroundings. Finding a knife, the voice urges her to attack the being that is drawing the life out of the young child. What is not to love about that? I had to know more about what would cause someone to have such vivid dreams and the details in that dream ….tell me more! Jennifer likes her booze. She knows she should quit but it is her coping mechanism. She lives with her boyfriend Tony who deals drugs. Jennifer lives across the street from Ebony who is a vampire. I thought this was strange since she was the only vampire in the book but I did like Ebony and her part in the book. Jennifer and Ebony are like two peas in a pod as they both have issues and they are both trying to avoid their issues as much as possible. Ebony needs to eat and Jennifer tries to help with that situation and Jennifer likes to drink but the end result is not always good so Ebony tries to help Jennifer with that. Jennifer and Ebony are good for each other if they can stop their urges. I liked both of these characters as they each had flaws, were both trying to be strong and tried to be honest with each other. They seemed like real people as everything was up front. In this book we get a closer look at Jennifer which explains a lot about what makes Jennifer behave the way she does. Oh yeah, there is a cliffhanger at the end…..ahhh! I won this book.
Two lost souls. Jennifer is a teenage former addict and Ebony is her strange new neighbor. After an argument with her boyfriend, Jennifer leaves and goes into the woods. Ebony extends a helping hand and expects nothing in return. Something Jennifer isn't used to. She might be able to change her life with the help of a good friend. But then she learns Ebony's secret and may not survive to return to any life.
I was a little lost at the beginning, but as the story unfolded, I became more intrigued with Ebony and my heart went out to Jennifer. Two very different characters that complemented one another so well. Great characterization.
The tale has marvelous tension and a constant edge of creepiness. A good start to this horror series.
Seventeen year old Jennifer is an ex-heroin addict living with her boyfriend Tony and drug dealer. She is estranged from her family, all alone with only Tony and her haunting (drug addicted) past.
Ebony is the new woman who moved in across the street, she is an odd woman, a loner with a secret of her own. She is a vampire. She somewhat befriends Jennifer and her world is about to change.
Fast paced psychological (short) vampire thriller. I really enjoyed The Fragile Things and I look forward to the next book in the series.
I picked up Part 1 for free as a kindle promotion and won Part 2, and to be honest I had no idea what I was getting into. These books are so, SO well written and moving and new. The characters are fantastically flawed and the juxtaposition between being a "monster" and being an addict, which has been done a million times before, feels fresh and new and is beautifully written. Truly, spectacularly beautiful. I cannot wait for parts 3 and 4.
