Love Lisa Renee Jones and all of her books - I knew that I was going to get sucked into this box set as well and I definitely did! These three books are all about the Walker Brothers of Walker Security, plus we get an extra bonus story at the end of this box set...yay!
Note: I will update my review as I read the individual books in the set.
Book 1: Hot Secrets (Royce)
Sexy, alpha and dominant, Royce Walker. Ex-FBI Agent and resident hot cookie, Royce blasts onto the scene with his good looks and confident allure. He has eyes immediately for criminal lawyer, Lauren Reynolds, who also happens to the be the daughter of a prominent Senator. What Royce doesn't know is that he is actually going to fall for his assignment and what Lauren doesn't know is that she is actually an assignment. Obviously, this has bad news written all over it, but we get some pretty hot scenes in before it all goes somewhat south. However, there is so much other stuff going on in this book (murder, mystery, suspense), that the H and h aren't really given the opportunity to stay mad at each other. This is a good thing, especially since the book is pretty short in length. There were definite twists in this one and although I had my theories, I wasn't entirely correct. A great read!
I really like the Walker brothers. The first story was about Mark (who is a friend of the Walker brothers) and Lindsay.. Lyndsay was annoying and constantly getting herself into trouble. 3 stars..
Next book was about Royce Walker and Lauren and I liked that one a lot more. Royce was such a sweetheart and yet a protective alpha. 4 stars.
The last story was the best and it was about Julie (Laurens best friend) and Luke Walker. Oh Luke you are one sexy beast! 4.5 stars.
But who I want to read about the most and his story was NOT included was Blake Walker who is walking a dangerous path and is struggling after the murder of his fiance. Frankly I am dying to read his book.
I read the first book of this set and then stopped. Mainly for two reasons: I really found the first story deadly boring and the prologue of the second was eerily similar to the one I had just read.
Secrets exposed
I have no idea what this book is about. I could not connect with any characters, some of them were so over the top to be almost fantasy. Or let's say, if you want to talk crooked cop/lawyer you better be prepared to give them serious depth. Motivation is lacking in all of them from the dutiful daughter to her saviour to her enemy.. Meh
Plot. Hmm... what plot, sorry?
The blurb of this set is a bit off set. The Walkers brothers have no role in the first story.
The Walker Brothers are complete Alpha Males theres something about Alpha Males that I just love!!! They have to be written right to love them Lisa Renee Jones Is Perfect at writing them!! This Box Set is so detailed that you can completely grasp what Mrs. Jones is picturing in her head! Three Great Books For Such an Epic Deal!! As with Most Of Mrs. Jones Books they can be read as a series OR they are strong enough to Stand Alone!! Of course the Series is such a Better way to read them! Especially for such a low price GRAB THEM WHILE YOU CAN!!!Tall, Dark, and Deadly 3 book box set Tall, Dark, and Deadly 3 book box setLisa Renee Jones
This series is fantastic! Lisa Renee Jones does it again! This time the first two books are about two of the Walker brothers.. I really want to know the third brother finds love. The other is about two lawyers that well come together with slight reference to the Walker brothers.
The first book is about Royce Walker, definitely the brother that did not attach himself to anyone and did not fall in love. Well Royce falls hard for Lauren!!!
The second book is about Luke Walker and his former sex interest Julie, who coincidentally is best friends with Lauren. Julie believes she is not capable of love for any man, well she meets her match in Luke.
The third book is about Lindsey Paxton who turned her back on her fathers law firm to become an FBI agent. Her father falls ill so she goes to her fathers former law partner, Mark Reeves. They are both instantly attracted to each other but can Lindsey persuade Mark to come back to her dads law firm??!!
The books held my attention enough to read between loads if laundry..but by mid-way through the second book I was tired of the use of the words "sauntered" and any form of the word "sashay"to describe how someone walked anywhere in the room. Also the... "made me feel like I never felt before" started to lose the meaning when said at least one a chapter. all female chars where VERY simular in hangups as wellas the "caveman" mentallity of the men.
I am new to reading these types of books and I dont understand why these women internalize and question EVERYTHING. Down to the smallest event... like get into the car.
Tall, Dark and Deadly is hands down one of my favorite romantic suspense series. Ms. Jones continues to show her brilliance in this series. All of the books are sexy, yet well developed and extremely well written. Watching the Walker brothers and Co. fall for their leading ladies was a true joy. I love watching a tough as nails man, which every hero in this series is, find the woman that can turn their world upside down. Lisa Renee Jones really has a gift. The stories held my attention from the get-go and left me needing more! I cannot wait to get my hands on Blake's story!
Hot Secrets Review: I figured out early who the stalker was. I also figured out the other character involved. In my opinion this book is predictable and repetitive. I was entertained but not invested. I don't like either character much. Royce is too overbearing. Lauren is suppose to be strong but way too silly when she has a stalker.
Dangerous Secrets Review: Very predictable! Slow moving too much repetition Luke and Julie keep saying the same thing. I did like Luke and Julie better than Royce and Lauren. Luke was a little annoying with the over protective crap he pulls. I liked Julie standing up to Luke. I did know who was behind everything from the get go. There was a little more suspense than book 1.
Secrets Exposed Review: It's okay but too much repetition. I knew who was behind everything from the start. In my opinion it's very predictable. I found the next to last two chapters the best. Why do the supposedly smart women keep making the same mistakes. I'm glad I'm done with this series.
In my opinion this boxed set is slow moving, predictable and way too much repetition. This series just did not float my boat.
The biggest problem that I had with these books is the heroine.
I don’t know why authors feel the need to make strong independent women be stupid bitches? Ironically there is a huge difference but most authors just don’t get that.
Strong independent women are not stupid. That is how they become strong and independent. They weigh cost/benefit regularly.
All of these books had women who would demand that they didn’t NEED then men and purposefully put their lives at risk. They’d do this just to spite and prove. Unfortunately, this just doesn’t do it for me. I like my heroine to actually have a brain.
The worst of these books was the last one. That girl was just plain stupid.
Lawyer turned FBI agent turned back to lawyer and she make a ton of really stupid decisions JUST to prove she didn’t need the man...but...she was desperate to get the man to take over her fathers law firm...nope, she’s supposedly NOT stupid; except in this book she was constantly stupid.
The I want you do do something for me Ugh I have to do something so you will Okay I’ll do it, but only because I NEED you to do the thing Then Oh my safety is in danger...never mind...I’ll do what I want. Forget me getting you to do the original thing
But then the books take the puppies (ya know, the strong dominant men) and they stay and do what the stupid girl wants.
Yes, there are many books out there that are well written and the girl doesn’t have to be just plain stupid. Unfortunately this series isn’t one of them.
I give it three start because otherwise I liked it.
Overall, I thought they were good stories. The heroines could've had more spine to them but they did compliment the men well. What I always have problems with are the tiny, minor discrepancies and I don't understand how they got past the content editors .... great seen in one of the books about her stripping off his shirt and buttons going flying everywhere ... except he was in a t-shirt all day; did he suddenly put on a shirt and tie at 5pm? Another great scene where the tension in an elevator is described and then ... they walk out of the stairwell. To me, these minor inconsistencies really do detract from the stories. But, I guess we're not all here for just the stories, so maybe they won't bother you.
I love Lisa Renee Jones and recently read a later book in this series not realising that there were earlier books to read. By pure chance this collection had been sitting on my kindle for a while so when it was next in line for reading I was more than happy to jump into it. It didn't disappoint with three fast paced, action packed stories in the Walker Security world. Three alpha males find their hearts stolen by three strong and independent women who give them a run for their money. Just loved this series completely!
This box set includes the intoduction to the Tall Dark and Deadly series, Secrets Exposed. This is Mark and Lindsey's story and our first intro to Royce Walker.
The second book, Hot Secrets, is Royce and Lauren's story. The third book is Dangerous Secrets, Luke and Julie's story.
All three books are well written with strong, likeable characters and entertaining storylines. The have well balanced romantic, suspenseful and danger elements that make a great overall reading experience.
I enjoyed this whole series. It was a good romantic suspense series about three brothers who own a security company and each meet the woman who will become their wife. All of the stories are well written.
They are not super long, but each story is complete. The brothers are each featured in the other's stories as well as their own.
Drama packed romance, mystery and beautiful people. Great dialogue and scene description. I felt each word. Each emotion. I know it’s fiction but a girl “ old one” can dream.
Just another brilliant box set by this amazing author. I love everything Lisa Renee Jones writes. This is just another one of the many books I've had since way back when, and I've decided to read more of the books I've had for a while. Great job .
This book really grabbed me from the first page. We meet Lindsey Paxton an FBI agent who has had to come back to her hometown to look after her fathers attorney business while he recovers in hospital. Lindsey's father wants her to take over and run the business which Lindsey is adamant she will not do. Lindsey was an amazing attorney but lost her confidence due to a case where she got the defendant off and then another body turned up. Lindsey turns to Mark Reeves her fathers ex-partner who's relationship with Lindsey's dad turned sour. There is a serial killer on the lose! the murders are eerily similar to the case which knocked Lindsey for six and all the victims look like her. Can Lindsey redeem herself? Can Mark Save Lindsey from becoming the next victim? Full of passion and a few thrills. Downsides are the author does not give any motivation for the serial killer doing what he does and the end is wrapped up too quickly....it would have been nice to drag it out for just a couple of pages to build up a smidge of suspense.
Book 2 - Hot Secrets
In this book we meet Lauren Reynolds who works for the district attorneys office. She is the daughter of a senator and his stepwife. Lauren's father hires a bodyguard (Royce)for Lauren due to death threats.....under the condition that Royce is not permitted to tell Lauren anything. I'm sure you can see where this story is going! Thw walker brothers = hot blooded alpha males! need i say more? Downsides - hmmm its hard to explain without giving a spoiler. well lets just say....i have a problem with motivation again in this book but only in part. We don't hear enough about the case Lauren is working on, other than an allegedly abused wife kills her allegedly abusive husband. I also think the end, whilst good, could have been made better by just stretching it a couple of pages.
Book 3 - Dangerous Secrets
This book focuses on Lauren Reynolds best friend Julie, which is a nice carry on from the previous book. In the last book we get a few hints at past history between Julie and the Walker Brother Luke. Julie is a divorce attorney, which she didnt choose but is amazing at. The only way to do her job is to be stone cold and bury her emotions deep. Her current client is a Judge who is divorcing his wife Elizabeth. This is not a simple divorce case, especially when elizabeth visits Julie threatening to expose the judges underhand secrets, secrets that are worth killing for! Can Luke keep Julie alive long enough to break the barrier and get to her emotions? Downsides - Storyline is not as good as in previous two books. I'm not sure the secret is worth killing for. I also felt that there wasn't enough info on the "secret" and the baddies and the double crossing etc.
Overall - I did like these books but with a few tweaks they could have been brilliant. If there was more attention to detail and a little bit more suspense i could describe them as "fifty shades meets james patterson". Lisa Renee Jones certainly knows how to bring us Hot Blooded alpha Males and even just for that these are worth a read!
I read the books together as an anthology & am going to review them in the order they appeared here, starting with book #1 Hot Secrets.
Hot Secrets introduces Lauren Reynolds, who has a pushy Senator father and a demanding job with the DA. After Lauren receives some pretty serious threats, her father "hires" Royce Walker as her bodyguard and all round protector. Royce isn't allowed to tell Lauren of the danger or his real role.
Royce and his two brothers Blake and Luke, are alpha males to the extreme. Royce is uber protective of Lauren, and although I wasn't always convinced about Royce's methods, I liked him.
The story focuses on Lauren's struggle to do her job, survive the danger and not give into to Royce's many charms. I did guess the twist with this one but it was still enjoyable to watch it all unfold. 4 Stars!
The next book is Dangerous Secrets (book #2) which shifts to Julie (Lauren's bestie from book #1) and Luke Walker. Julie and Luke have a past and er...spent some time together years ago. It isn't until Julie is inadvertently dragged into the divorce battle between a judge and his wife that she needs Luke's help.
As with the first book the narrative follows a mystery/crime hunt which Julie is thrown into. Luke is as possessive, if not more so than Royce and goes all out to convince a cynical Julie (she is a divorce lawyer) that they can be a couple.
I had just finished J.Lynn's Tempting the Bodyguard when I read this and so the stories did slightly merge together at times. I wasn't as invested in Julie and Luke's story as I was with Lauren and Royce, but I enjoyed it nevertheless. 3.5 Stars!
The last book Secrets Exposed is actually a kind of spin-off, prequel novella set in the same world, but featuring different characters. This time we meet former lawyer and current FBI agent Lindsey Paxton. Lindsey has returned to New York to look after her ill father and rather begrudgingly run his legal firm. She seeks out her dad's former partner, Mark, to take over the business but ends up working with him to solve a murder and find answers.
I did find Lindsey a little annoying because she kept running off and often seemed to repeat the same mistakes. The twist was clever and Lisa Renee Jones kept me guessing for a while.
I enjoyed the box set and would like to read Blake's story. I'd like to have seen the characters developed a but more though, but perhaps that will come in the next instalment. Royce and Lauren were my favourite couple by far because they had more depth and their mystery had greater suspense, but the other stories were enjoyable too. 3 Stars!
There’s nothing like scrolling through your to-be-read list to find out you have a box set for the author you are currently feening on. Now I do have to admit, I wasn’t over the top crazy about this series as I was the other but this Tall, Dark, and Deadly series was no slouch. The Walker Brothers are an interesting bunch and the cases they work on make for great page-turners. If I had one big complaint, it would be the order the books come up in the box set. The last book was actually Secrets Exposed, which is touted to be the intro to the series. My assumption was since this was the Walker Brother series then book three should have been about the third brother. Nope, it’s about Royce’s friend. So keep that in mind when reading this set. Maybe you might want to consider changing up your reading order.
Hot Secrets #1 Stars 3.5 This was a nice introduction to the series. Lauren and Royce are highly entertaining. Sparks heat up fast between them, which leads straight to her life in danger, and him protecting her. It wasn’t too hard for me to figure out who was after Lauren but I was able to shelf it to the side. The story isn’t perfect and had points to it that kind of annoyed me but in the end, and enjoy it.
Dangerous Secrets #2 Stars – 3 This was my least favorite in the set only because it read too much like the first book in the series. It had the same formula only the names and the situation has changed. Don’t get me wrong, I liked Julie and Luke’s story. The mystery around the divorce she’s working on puts Julie in a hot mess. Add to that some of the situations these former lovebirds get into range from humorous to steamy hot. The ending while good felt rushed and abrupt. Overall, while good, it just didn’t live up to my expectations.
Secrets Exposed #0.5 Stars – 3.5 This was my favorite of the three books in this set. It had more action, intrigue and the character were great. Lindsey was a strong female heroine and held onto that title until the end. Mark was sexy and secretive. The dynamics between them were less caveman and more on an equal footing. Their head-butting made for good reading but what really got me going was the murder case(s). I’ll let you figure it out. It all ended on a great note that left me smiling.
If you're a fan of protective, loyal, alpha males whose behaviors border on controlling and caveman-like, then you will enjoy this book set. There isn't anything specific that makes this set unique. I look upon this book set as casual reading to take up some free time you have. Each book basically follows the same formula of alpha male looking to protect the female he is interested in from a certain danger.
The first two book are related to each other considering the male characters are brothers, the Walkers, and the female characters are best friends. Although I was disappointed to find the third book doesn't continue the Walker brothers story with the youngest brother. I would've enjoyed reading his story and get more in depth information about him. The third book does include the oldest, Royce, in a cameo. But other than that, it's a completely separate story on its own.
There isn't really a standout book for me in this set. They each had their pros and cons. I felt the romance between the couples developed too fast. It just seemed like they just met and already they are professing strong feeling for each other. It felt as if the romance was rushed. However, the second book featuring Luke and Julie already had a history. So the foundation was already set for a romance thus the "quickness" of the romance didn't seem so out of place. Furthermore, I also felt the first two books ended abruptly. It just seemed the books could have been wrapped up more eloquently or could have benefited from an epilogue.
Overall, these books serve to preoccupy you for a couple of free hours. They are a light read filled with angst, drama, hot love scenes, and alpha males.
Hot Secrets 5 stars: A prosecutor is receiving threatening calls & letters. Her father gets Royce to investigate some letters he's been getting. Lauren & Royce must figure out who is threatening her before it's too late.
DANGEROUS SECRETS 5 stars: A divorce attorney represents a judge when his soon to be ex wife dies and it is ruled a suicide. Luke & Julie had a short affair yrs ago but he wants more now. He must protect her from a corrupt Judge & a drug cartel.
SECRETS EXPOSED 3 1/2 Stars: This one wasn't as good as the others in my opinion. The story was good but the main character had me wanting to slap her. She would go hot & cold too much. A former lawyer comes back to help her father's law firm from ruins. She enlist the help of one of her father's former employee. They are representing a man accused of murder but they seem to be connected to a murder & rapes that caused her to leave her career as a lawyer & join the FBI.
The first two stories were great! I loved everything about them! The third story was a bit of a let down b/c 1) It wasn't about the Walker brothers and I really wanted a story for the last brother 2) I didn't really like the story since the general theme felt like a bit of a replay of the first two stories and 3) the main female character from the last story felt like a mixture of the first two female leads...she didn't feel like she really was her own person with her own story.
Also, side not SPOILER!!!
I didn't like how in the last story the female was supposed to be a trained FBI agent, but when she finds that someone has broken into her home she gives her gun to a civilian lawyer to check if the intruder is still inside...it fit the characters story lines and personalities, but it peeved me b/c it broke my immersion with how unrealistic it felt for such a serious situation.
My only issue was with the prequel, Secrets Exposed, and how the one of the victims name was Elizabeth Moore which is the same name as the victim from the second book, Dangerous Secrets. It confused me at first cause I was expecting the people to be the same person til I realized that wasn't going to be the case. Then towards the end of the novella there was another Elizabeth. There were two Gregs also. There were also a few instances where things were a little messed up too, one example being Mark was dressed in jeans and a tee shirt, but later at his house they start messing around and he's wearing a button up shirt with a tie. I really didn't like Lindsey either. She kept going on how she was a trained professional, yet she had many TSTL moments. Oh well, I still enjoyed the other two books so I guess that makes up for it.
The most depressing thought I believe I've ever had was when I realised that life was too short to read all the books in this world that I want to read! So I made a deal with myself; that if I ever came across a book that I couldn't get into - for whatever reason - that I would put it down.
I may pick this up again some day (hence, it not being removed from my library) and read it again, and finish it too. Then again, I may not.
Because I've placed this book on this shelf does not mean it's a bad book, just that I couldn't get into it; yes, this is one of those 'it's not you, it's me' reasons, but it is the truth.
So, if you're reading this review, don't take it into consideration. Move on to someone else's review.
